Poured a toffee brown into a Chimay chalice. Around a finger of tan head that receded to almost nothing.

Really excellent aroma of brown sugar, butter, and nuttiness. Moderate carbonation and a nice crisp mouthfeel (if a little thin). Initially sweet with malts, chocolate, and buttered caramel. A long finish of roasted nuts and very slight bitterness.

This is a great offering -- one of my favorites from Rogue. Nicely complex, it keeps you coming back for more without growing too sweet or heavy. The hazelnut flavor can sometimes tread close to "artificial", which keeps this one from earning a perfect score on taste.

A: Pours a nice, medium slightly-hazed brown with a fairly-nice off-white head.

S: Definite nuttiness comes through along with some sweet malt; not terribly complex, but a really nice balance. A bit of caramel and toffee in the background.

T: Again, loads of nuts coming here. A bit distracting and not quite as clean as the nose was. This is definitely a bit one-dimensional, but not bad by any means.

M: Very nice and creamy. The nut flavors work well with the sweetness.

D: All a bit too much hazelnut, detracting a bit from the ultimate drinkability of this one, along the same lines as their Chocolate Stout.

bomber bottle. Rerating ;

Pours a dark clear shimmering chestnut brown ale in the mug with a puffy tan colored sticky cap which lasts and laces well.

Aroma as advertized : copious amounts of specialty malt and nuts with a wisp of sweetness and grassy hop notes.

Front side of this ale is a chew on big malts then a blast of roasted hazel nut and black malt roastiness is off set by a judicious amount of woody hopping...finishes lightly drying slightly bitter in a nutty-malty ambience.that lingers into the after taste. This is a nut brown with nuts...or at least nut extract!

Pours a lovely, creamy head. Not super long-lasting, but nice.

Aroma reminds me of a bowl of cereal. Something like Barbara's Shredded Spoonfuls which we often have in our house. Not a super-aromatic beer.

Dark brown in the glass, had up the light lets a rich red color show through.

Cereal-reminiscent flavor (probably the hazelnut) definitely there in the initial taste that hits your mouth. Followed by carbonation, and a very pleasant toasted flavor.
A pretty clean finish after that.

One of the first brown ales I had was Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale. Probably Newcastle around the same time. Have recently had Bell's Best Brown on tap and thought it was good. Smith's has remained my favorite. This might be at #2 now. Would like to do a side-by-side with this and Smith's.

This is complex enough to be interesting, and yet very drinkable.
I think I was put off by the inclusion of "nectar" in the name.

Worth a try if you're on a brown ale quest as I have been.

Dark amber with an eighth-inch, off-white head that thins out a bit but remains full.
Smell is toasty, bready malts, with some nutty caramel. Faint toffee and cocoa as well.
Taste is again toasty, bready malts. Hops come in nicely after, with some slightly buttery, nutty tones and faint caramel on the finish.
Mouthfeel is crisp and fairly clean, with a dry finish. Medium-light body.
Drinkability is very good. Great beer that goes down easily.

On tap at the Lazy Dog Cafe in Valencia, CA.

A - Color is a strongly brewed iced tea tone that came with no head. Very little lacing on this one.

S - Sweet malts, chocolate, hazelnuts.

T - Bittersweet chocolate mixed with toasted hazelnuts. There is a slight bitterness to this beer that is fleeting.

M - Leaves a slight coating feeling in the mouth. Good carbonation.

D - This is a very good beer. I had it with a hickory smoked bacon and blue cheese butter burger and it was a fine meal indeed. I would definitely get this one again.

650ml/22 US fl. oz bomber poured into a tulip pint glass...

A - Slightly hazy ruby red, brownish colour to the body. The caramel head is quite rich and frothy, leaving some pleasant lacing on the glass.

S - Hazelnuts is what I smelled right from the start. Some caramel, brown sugar, a faint hint of dark fruit, and some floral notes in the background. Quite a mild aroma, even for a brown ale, but it's pretty good still.

T - This beer has got a VERY pronounced hazelnut flavour, which is excellent and makes it stand out. Not very sweet, with some bitter-sweet chocolate and toffee notes. Very subtle dark fruit notes, and a touch of oatmeal (not sure why, but I could definitely taste it). Some bitter notes in the finish.

M - Medium-bodied. The carbonation was kind of crisp at first, but then it mellows down. Quite smooth, even creamy. No trace of alcohol (not surprisingly).

D - Good. This is a good American Brown ale. Certainly not the greatest, but the "hazelnut" component definitely did not disappoint and met all of my expectations.

Poured from a 650ml bomber, beautiful mahogany color (clear), with reddish tones when backlit. Thick, light tan head (1.5") that retained well, but little lacing.

Smell is chocolate malt, nutty as expected, noticeable coffee tones.

Taste is simply fantastic. All of the smells come through much bolder on the tongue. The nuts, chocolate, and coffee are well-balanced. Slightly sweet with a touch of bitterness. I paired this with a medium-rare ribeye that I had marinated in Guinness, and it was perfect.

Slightly thick on the tongue, but not in a bad way.

I love this beer. I definitely owe the otherwise clueless waitress that suggested this the first time I had it (on-tap). After being told my first choice was no longer available, I went with this because, as she put it "alot of people seem to be ordering this for some reason". Not quite as good from the bottle, but still outstanding. This one's a keeper.

Mahogany color with a light tan head with nice retention. The aroma is hazelnuts, cocoa, and chocolate malt. Same for the taste. Not overwhelmingly sweet, very small hop presence, very well made.

Medium bodied, not much carbonation, and creamy. Good drinkability. I especially like the aroma of this beer. The 6.2 % abv is also a nice change of pace from some of the big beers I have had lately.

Let me say from the beginning I LOVE THIS BEER...

I have had this beer from the bottle and tap. Currently my local neighborhood bar has it tap and I love them for it.

Pours dark brown in color. The color almost says flavor. The head is white creamy and heavy. The smell is chocolate with a little toasted almonds.

Flavor hits the toung like a rocket ship but with pure smoothness. The Hazlenut flavor rolls around hitting you with a little chocolate and suger and cinnamon covered nuts.

The best part about this beer is when you add other food flavors. I have always enjoyed this beer on it's own but then I addes some buffalo wings for dinner and this beer jumped to an increadiable level. I have now done that with a french dip sandwich as well. Try it you won't be disappointed.

Ah I had been waiting and waiting to finally taste this beer, the wait is over!

Poured in a pint glass

A- Lovely chocolate color with some mahogany overtones

S- Beautiful coffee, brown sugar, sweet smell. This was amazing, although I didn't smell the hazelnut, it was very sweet (I should mention this was my dessert, so it ended up perfect)

T- Nice roasted, toasted coffee and brown sugar flavor, incredibly similar to the smell. Though I did taste the nuttiness it tasted more like roasted almonds than hazelnuts, but still very delicious. A bit dry as well as alcoholic to balance the incredible sweetness.

M- Here's where I got a bit hung-up, though it was smooth, it seemed a bit sticky and heavy.

D- Love, love, love this beer, but I could only drink it occasionally as it's very heavy on the palate. If I got another of these I'd like to have someone around to drink it with to make sure it would be appreciated (and finished!)

From notes

Glass - Sam Adams perfect pint

A - pours a very nice clear deep brown with some ruby tints. Fairly long lasting off white head.

S - toasty caramel malts. A light nuttyness. Some mild spicy hop presance.

T - toasty malts are at the forefront of this brew. Followed by a mild hazelnut flavor. Some light hop bitterness, a mild acidity, and some alcohol warming round it out to a nice dry finish.

M - very smooth. Medium bodied. Medium high carbonation.

D - easy drinking ale. Complex and flavorful but not over powering in the least. Solid brew.

Served on tap in a pint glass.

Appearance: A deep, slightly cloudy burgundy color, with cherry changing to brown with the thickness of the glass. Soft off-white head lingers casually.

Smell: Strong, smooth, nutty aroma dominates the nose; roasted malt and vanilla also present.

Taste: There is a persistent, controlling hazelnut taste from start to finish. Caramel sweetness and a roasted malt flavor provide additional introductory stimulation, and some vanilla notes find their way into the flavor.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth taste is somewhat thrown off by the carbonation. It would be an improved with a creamier feel.

Drinkability: With a good level of complexity and balance, this is a great niche beer in the brown ale category. Definitely worth looking for on a regular basis.

From the 22 ouncer with no date, lot code, or other identifying note. Sampled on March 12, 2010. The pour is a handome mahogany brown color with decent clarity. The head is silky and tan and about a half-inch thick. The hazelnuts in the brew are evident in the aroma and because of that, it is one of the more unique aromas I have tried. Other than hazelnuts the overall characteristic is sweet and sugary. There is a nice full-bodied texture followed by a prodigious mix of caramel malts, hazelnuts, bread, and maple in the flavor. Bitter hops make a faint appearance but they are overpowered by the sweeter sensations. Rather good.

Nose - The Hazelnut really comes through with this one. Strong nutty, caramel, with a touch of yeast.

Taste - Starts off much like any brown ale, toffee and caramel with a little more richness and intensity of flavor. A bit strong on the alcohol mid way, but you get the full effect of the Hazelnut upon swallowing and forget all about the heat. Nice strong nutty finish that doesn't taste synthetic.

Overall an outstanding example of the style.

A- Browish bronze color which seems slightly hazy. An off white 1 1/2 finger width head with slight orange tint. Now the head has reduced to about 3/4 finger width but seems to be holding. Okay, I just finished mentioning that stuff about detecting peanut butter notes in the aroma and the head has reduced to 1/2 finger but is still holding.

S - First thoughts: Wow!... This is a nice aroma. Sweet and nutty - like those maple nut chews you get from those shopping mall confectioners. Is that a buttery undertone I am detecting? Some peanut butter notes.

T & M - Getting a nutty taste on the front end with something like roasted coffee in the finish. Gathering some maple syrup in the middle. Mildly sweet, not in a Belgian Quad kinda way but more like iced tea with just enough sugar to kill that bitterness, but no more. Smooth finish characterized by a faint bitter character. Has that strange and nearly alcoholy after taste that I've noticed when eating hazelnuts. All this goes along with a mild carbonation and a subtle creamy texture.

D- Great. Gulp, swallow, gulp, swallow....

A: It has a dark red and brown when in direct light, which deepens in color when not in direct light resembling an almost red wine-like appearance. Has a clear consistency with a beige head that retains well.

S: A definite nutty smell that is blended with malt. There is a slight sweet smell that I couldn't wrangle though..

T: A nice roasted malt flavors that make me have to give praise to the name. The hazelnut plays through pretty plainly and you don't have to stress yourself to taste it. There are other components such as coffee, chocolate (lighter than dark), some hops, alcohol, and a slight sweet and acidic signature.

M: Much lighter than I expected. Smooth, somewhat oily, with light hints of carbonation. Nice crispness and bitterness at the end.

D: This is definitely a nut brown and has qualities that make it unique and worth trying. The flavors really open up, and I would recommend allowing them to do so because the get much better.

Pours a clear brownish deep orange color with a thin bubbly fleeting head with no lacing and little retention.

The aroma is full of nutty notes. I don't know if hazelnut would be my guess. It seems like toasted pecan or something to me. That's what it smells like to me.

And the flavor is the same. Very nutty and sweet. But with just barely enough bitterness to keep it from being too sweet.

Full bodied and sweet but not cloying, with a ingering interesting light hop finish.

And this beer goes down so smooth and sweet, it makes me want another. Very nice offering indeed.

S: Very nice aroma of sweet melt, some nuttiness, and slight hints of milk chocolate.

T: Even better than the aroma. Sweet from start to finish, with bits of chocolate and hazelnuts coming through. Not sickening, overpowering... just nicely balanced and really enjoyable. Awesome.

Pours a light but solid head, a dark brown, caramel coloring. The head dissipates rather quickly, leaving a think layer. Has the smell of caramel, malts, and maybe something like a raisin aroma. Upon tasting it has an excellent, light, solid, but not overbearing nutty brown, malty, caramel flavor. Very satisfying. Enough subtlety to not scare one off, but enough flavor to know its good. Very solid, yet not heavy mouthfeel. More of a sipping beer because of its complexity and quality, but go ahead and put a couple back.

I had this at Fatheads recently was poured from a 22oz bottle ordered from the upstairs.

A - Poured a clear brown color with slight head.
S - I asked my friend what it smelled like and he said "mopwater" but I could smell the grain and malt but not too much nut.
T - Pretty ok Nut brown ale. Really wanted more nut with a title like "Hazelnut" but it was pretty good.
M - Went great with my "headwitch" very light and refreshing.
D - I may not have it again since I can think of a couple of nut browns that taste better but this one crosses the 6 percent ABV so that might have affected the flavor
