I can't help but compare this ale to a hazlenut stout I recently had that was much better in all respects. This beer had a decent smell and taste of hazlenut but it soon becomes tedious to drink. The consistency just feels wrong since the thinness does little to back up the hazlenut flavor. I realize that a brown ale is supposed to be thinner than a stout but this beer just doesn't work with a thin body. Try J Wakefield Hazlenut Imperial Stout if you want a great beer with hazlenuts. (492 characters)

Outstanding. Pours a deep brown with light head. Smells a lovely malty with hazelnuts. Taste a perfect balance of mild bitter nuts and sweet brown sugar. An excellent beer. (177 characters)

Too hazelnut forward and watery on the down swing. Also a little too sweet as well. Just not to my liking as much as it is to the rest of the bell curve. (153 characters)

More hazelnutty than expected. Not necessarily a bad thing, just unlike anything I've ever tried before! Light feeling and very drinkable. Definitely a dessert beer. (165 characters)

Unbelievable brown ale, achieves things in its class no other brown is trying...my all time favorite in the category. If you appreciate the flavor profile, it won't disappoint! (176 characters)

Something tastes like vanilla extract towards the end. A tad too sweet and could use a little more carbonation. Now that I'm done nitpicking have to say this is a great beer. I think most beer lovers of any style could appreciate this one. You could drink this year round. At $14 for a six pack it's pretty steep but I'll definately be buying this again. Easily one of my favorite beers now. (391 characters)

Pours a deep brown/ruby with a slightly brown tinged head. Not the best retention.

Aroma is sweet, toasty, nutty with pronounced hazelnut.

The beer has a rich maltiness to it with that pronounced hazelnut addition which works well. Has a slight bitterness at the end.

Drinks smooth is lightly carbonated and has a medium body. (330 characters)

I am a fan of brown ale, so I approached this with a raised eyebrow. The pour was a good sign - nice tan head, not overly carbonated, so far so good. This is a great smelling beer, if you like hazelnut. The taste is very nice, reminiscent of hazelnut flavoured coffee, which so popular in the early 1990s. This is a good beer, for sure, but I'm not sure if it is any better than other traditional Browns like Moose Drool. (421 characters)

Look- amber, typical for a brown ale, but nice hues. Smell- terrific, roasted hazelnut, such a warm aroma I love it. Taste- very good, light, not bitter, very malty, nice hazelnut flavor goes with aroma, real good stuff here. Feel- good, a tiny bit watery, some warmth, not extremely carbonated. Fairly refreshing for a brown ale. Try it for sure (346 characters)

Very smooth delicious beer. I'm constantly surprised by the mellow aftertaste. Many beers of similar color have bitter finishes, this one is much more polished. (162 characters)

Sampling right now on 1/15/15. Comes in a single 22 ounce (650ml( bottle with a nice painted on label (not a decal sticker) for around $6.00. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a 1L thumb-print handled glass stein.

Pours a hazy deep mahogany in color with a good 1-2 finger foamy head that finally settles down to a 2mm or so layer. Some spotty lacing is seen when sipped that leaves some small 'circle' spots that stick to the glass. The aroma is of roasted malts, hazelnuts with some brown sugar. Bit more going on with the taste as the hazelnuts and malts are right up front with the sip followed by some light caramel malts. Lots of flavor and goes down easy.. A very tasty brew with lots of great flavor. medium-bodied with perfect carbonation. Great job Rogue! (803 characters)

Look: About two fingers of head, pours a light reddish brown.

Smell: Salted caramel, brown sugar and hazelnut.

Taste: Hazelnut and caramel are very upfront.

Feel: Medium bodied. Perfect for a brown ale.

Overall: Fantastic brew. Nice sweet flavors without being overpowering. (281 characters)

one of my all time favorite brews. Have been to Portland twice for vacation and visited the brewery many, many times. Was lucky enough to catch a "garage sale" there where they were selling kegs and boxes of the 22oz bottles of various rogue ales for great discounts! I picked up 3 cases of the 22oz hazelnut brown nectar while there and was set for beer outside of bars all vacation. This is the beer that got me in to craft beer and my love for brown and nutty ales. (468 characters)

I've had this several times in mugs and pint glasses. Today's is in a pint glass.
The appearance was a nice looking dark brown color with a one finger white to off white foamy head that dissipated within less than a minute. Light trickling lacing stuck to the sides decently and slides after about a minute.
The smell had a cooked nutty caramel flavoring. Every time I've had it, I could never really tell if that was hazelnut specifically, but it has a definite nuttiness about it.
The taste was semi-roasty with a decent nutty and caramel flavoring running underneath. A light rolling nutty aftertaste starts and leads into the finish.
The mouthfeel was about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionability about it. The carbonation was good for the style and for me as it wasn't too sharp but mainly standard.
Overall, I say this was a decent American Brown Ale. I might have this again. (902 characters)

Not the biggest fan of brown ales, but this one is different. Very smooth taste, nice thick khaki head and feels great on the tongue. The hazelnut aroma is intoxicating but the overall taste and finish of this beer lacks. Like i said overall good just nothing amazing. (268 characters)

A: nice dark brown body, big head diminishes into a cm thick head after a minute
S: hazelnut, malt, brown sugar
T: if you like hazelnut, you're going to get a whole lot of hazelnut :) a sweet malt flavor follows, and it's topped off by a hop tang at the end
M: crisp and clear feel like a golden, wholesome hazelnut provides the smoothness and heaviness of a brown ale throughout
O: excellent beer. thoroughly infused in hazelnut but not too sugary or roasted. a robust and complex balance of flavors. (501 characters)

A: Poured into a pint glass to a light brown that's nearly translucent with a small tan head that fades quickly and leaves minimal lacing
S: smells intensely nutty and that's about it
T: taste is toasted malts and hazelnuts, some spicy hops, slight chocolate but it's mostly toasted malt and nuttiness. swallow is a little roasted malt, chocolate and more nuttiness
M: medium in body with slightly prickly carbonation and a slightly drying finish
O: A very good brown ale that has great flavors and complexity. this drinks very easily as well. If you like brown ales this one is sure to be a winner. (607 characters)

One of my absolute favorites, which is saying something considering I'm not all that fond of brown ales. Toasted hazelnut with notes of bittersweet chocolate. Incredibly smooth, incredibly tasty. (195 characters)

A: murky brown, Carmel nice head surprising for brown ale

S: a little nutty toffee smells sweet

T: pretty standard for a brown ale until you get to the finish and it has a creamy hazelnut taste that is nice

M: medium body

O: This is a pretty nice brown ale I mean you want be blown away by it but you will be satisfied and with the hazelnut finish it lets it stand a little taller than other browns (445 characters)

Appearance: Dark brown
Smell: Malts and caramel
Taste: Slight hops and malts
Mouthfeel: Light bodied
Drinkability: A pleasant beer but not as good as I expected. Not saying I was disappointed, I was just expecting better. I would drink again if offered, I simply would not seek this beer out..

Appearance: Pours pleasant dark brown with minimal head, fine brown foam which resolves quickly to lace and then none. Min to none carbonation.

Smell: Malty, nutty/hazelnut aroma, toasted malt/caramel with hint of dark raisin

Taste: Toasted malts at front of sip, followed by hazelnut and hint of hops with a pleasant clean finish, woody with some dried plum. Not syrupy despite the maltiness

Mouth feel: Very light body, a little surprising was its near absence of carbonation? As a previous reviewer mentioned, gave one the impression of flat soda. . . not bad, but a little jarring.

Drink-ability: a different take on the brown ale which was quite pleasant and quaffable. I would purchase again, though I wouldn’t go out of my way to find this beer. (762 characters)

Pours an amzing deep reddish brown color with decent head and lacing, not a lot. Aroma is not exceptionally strong, but the nuttiness and male sweetness comes across quite well and subtlely. Taste has a bit of bitter kick to it, but balances pretty well with the roasted malts and nuts. Good brown ale that is drinkable and not overpowering. (341 characters)

S. Hazelnut, apple, citrus, stout.
T. A wall of hazelnut, coffee stout.
M. Watery, crisp, slightly sticky.
O. Very good I enjoyed it very much. The down falls of this beer is that the mouth feel is very watery. Definitely try this one. (301 characters)

05/09/12 On tap at Rattle n Hum, NYC. Tried as black & tan w/Rogue Chocolate Stout. Called a "Snikers" it had plenty of hazelnut. Not bad. Now I need to taste it au natural (172 characters)
