7 Oz bottle poured into a tasting snifter
Bottled in 2010

A- Pours murky hazy dark amber brown. There is almost no head to speak of.

S- A sugary sweetness.. Tiny bit of dark fruit. Can smell the signature pacman yeast. Not as bold as I was expecting.

T- I get a sweetness at first. Followed up by a unique caramel toffee and a little bit of coffee blend. Sweet and creamy. Some dark fruits. A fairly tame and simple taste. Aftertaste is espresso coffee?

M- Drinks really easily. It has a good mouthfeel and a nice overall size. The beer doesn't have much alcohol feel nor taste.

O- Not entirely sure what to make of this beer. For a 5$, 7 oz bottle I cant really recommend this beer. Also, it didn't taste like and Wee Heavy I have ever had, its not that strong and doesn't remind me of a scotch ale. It is however a solid beer, just not one to sip and savor like I was expecting to get.

2010 7oz bottle

A - Pours a murky brown with very little head.

S - Big aroma of brown bread crust, some brown sugar, doughy yeast, rich caramel malt, moist raisin bread.

T - A whisper of citrus bitterness upfront with waves of bready malt behind it. Caramel, toffee, brown sugar, raisins. Flavors seem to be thinned out. Alcohol comes through more on the finish.

M - Heavy upfront but then it thins out on the backend. Low carbonation.

I wish the flavor would have been as good as the nose. Flavor was thinner than I expected. Overall a pretty good sipper.

On tap at 44 Stone in Columbia, MO 7/26/12

A - Poured a clear, dark amber color with a one-finger, khaki head of foam. It left sudsy trails of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled earthy and malty with some caramel notes.

T - Tasted of earthiness, peat, grasses, toffee and caramel maltiness. Some spicy bitterness.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a dry, clean finish.

O - This is a nice scotch ale. Glad it was on tap at 44 Stone.

Pour is this overly hazy cloudy beast of an ale. Decent white head. The smell is laden with caramel and toffee, everything I want to see from a scotch ale. Very sweet smelling and malt forward for sure.

The taste is actually really good. Very malt forward, with a strong caramel presence. Toffee is right behind in second but its close. Its so smooth and drinkable. I even think my girl might like how sweet and tasty this is, thats how sweet it is.

Poured from 7oz bottle into a tulip. Bottled in 2010, so there's some good age on this one.

Appearance: pale-brown hue with a goodly amount of murk and a thin head of frothy tan foam which dissipated quickly. I like the color but the head could be a lot better.

Smell: malty with a lot of chocolate character for the style. Some earthy hops come through as well, although deep in the mix. Decent, but not what I would call to-style.

Taste: much like the aroma, there's quite a bit of chocolate character in here. Luckily, there's also a lot of complexity here, with raisin and raw tobacco and a light but fresh and welcoming hop character. I like it.

Mouthfeel: medium body; a bit thin for the style, but not bad. A light carbonation lends a mild creaminess.

Overall: not a typical example of the style, but this beer stands on its own quite well.

Poured into a pint glass.

A: Cloudy orange-brown with a one-finger, off-white head that lasted a couple of minutes. Nice lacing.

S: Caramel and orange. Sweet malt.

T: Moderate sweetness and moderate bitterness. Molasses, dark fruit, and dark bread.

M: Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Smooth and slightly chewy.

O: Slightly lacking in hop character and under-carbonated, but pretty good overall.

Poured frm 7 oz bottle into chalice glass

Appearance – Pours a deeper brown color with almost a non-existent head. The lacing on this beer was quite minimal.

Smell – The smell was of sweet and slightly roasty malt. In the nose was a good hit of caramel and some burnt sugar smells.

Taste – The taste was rather sweet and malty up front. A brown sugar taste with some more dark bread and a little bit of chocolate tastes were most pertinent. Toward the middle the caramel in the nose became more pronounced in the taste. Some darker fruit flavors and a bit of vanilla work their way in toward the end, leaving a sweeter flavor in the mouth.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is creamy and the carbonation level is quite light. The body is very fitting for the abv and malt flavors, but the brew could use a bit more carbonation to balance out the sweetness of the beer.

Overall – The beer did have some nice flavor profiles. For the price however it was not really worth it.

Medium brown with a two finger head that fades slowly and leaves ok lacing.

Aroma is sweet malts, chocolate and vanilla with caramel swirls and grassy tones.

More balanced than the nose. The hops of earthy and grassy tones balance things out against a chocolate, caramel, and toasted bread background.

Overall, nicely balanced, easy and smooth

Overall a nice, drinkable, balanced beer!

Beer pours a nice dark brown with a bit of off white foamy head.

Beer smells very malty and sweet. Caramel and earthy.

Beer tastes a bit muted, considering the smell. Caramel is present in the sip and is slightly sweet, followed by a fairly boozy finish. Not enough flavor throughout.

Mouthfeel is a bit on the thin side.

Tulip

A - deep swampy brown and very earthy, no finger head and some sticky legs

S - tons of sugar, very dense sweet malts, cinnamon, ripe bananas, lots of grains, a lot of Belgian notes in the wheat and barley, caramel, vanilla and more awesome malts

T - tons of malts, spices, huge bready belgian yeast, sugar, vanilla, white chocolate, earth, bananas, grain and crazy wheat

M - full bodied, well balanced, medium minus complexity, low acidity and long sweet malty finish

D/O - very nice, refreshing, easy drinking and smooth beer. This is something I could get down with on a daily. Great malts, sugars and yeast. Just all around tasty

Final thought - $4 is a bit much for 7 or so ounces, but at 7% abv and great tasting. This is awesome. Not a huge rogue fan, but their xs line is solid
