When Rogue Nation gets its charter and becomes sovereign, I will vote for John Maier to be president. And when it comes time to create a currency, I hope all of our dollars are backed by Glen -- the symbol, as gold is to man, of any beer drinkers wealth, conquest, and pride.

When weefishheads sent this to me before it was posted on BA, he called it an "Amber IPA." And though I'd argue same as the next guy that that isn't a style, it is perhaps the best description for this simple/complex beer. The hop character is blooming with pine, resin, and a flooring melon and tropical fruit finish. The malt structure puts this in a camp with Troegs Hopback Amber.

There is some alcohol as this beer warms, but it's not at all strong/old ale like in quality. There's nothing oxidative in this beer and I don't think it'll age well -- it'll taste good in a year, but the gorgeous floral hops will die. The smoky finish seems borne of alcohol, but it's really just unintegrated bittering hops which are delicious, but a little too lively; this tastes like many an overhopped homebrew 1 week out of the fermenter which is precisely what it is. Its primary goal is to show a depth of hops in bitterness, flavor, and aroma and it somehow manages to achieve this with only one freakin hop.

Glen is completely drinkable now -- a wonderful fusion style of medium malty bitter beers -- and will probably hit its stride right when it is taken off the market in three weeks.

Relax, relax.

Had on Tap at the Brewery in Newport
5oz. Taster

Poured red in color with very active bubbles going on. Thin little head in the taster glass. Smelled malty sweet with some spice to it. Taste was pretty boozy with some of that spice that the smell had I can't really put my finger on what the spicey taste was maybe minty/piney but the alcohol came through the most.

On tap at Metropolis location Taco Mac, Atlanta, GA. Served in a traditional American pint glass. Reviewed on 12/31/08, directly prior to driving down to the Georgia Dome to watch my alma mater get its ass handed to itself by LSU in the Chick-Fil-A (formerly Peach) Bowl. Alas.

Appearance: A slightly hazy, dull copper orange-bodied beer with tons of fast, fine-bubbled, well-distributed carbonation. A slightly above average retention, half-finger, almost-white head lingered for a while and left a ring of foamy lace and a dusting of snow atop.

Aroma: Very, very faint, with the only notes coming through being those of well-roasted dough, and piney, west coast hops. Very little going on here.

Taste: Sweet, syrupy malts, dominate here, caramelly but not sweet, with a dash of light fruity and spicy pine notes picking up the slack. On the whole this one's pretty neutral - not flavorless, but borderline.

Mouthfeel: Nice and even though crisp, and medium to less-than-medium bodied with medium-sized effervescence. Average in a good way.

Drinkability: I wasn't too impressed with this one. There just wasn't that much going on one way or another, and for a beer with a 8.something abv% (as it was listed on the menu, can't recall precisely now), I'd expect a little more.

Had this on-tap at Frisco Grille in Columbia, MD.

The beer poured a cloudy copper with a thick, white head into a pint glass. The aroma was of fresh, piney hops - nice. The taste was big on hop bitterness, slightly astringent mouthfeel, with an intensely bitter finish. Nice carbonation and lacing, but could have been better balanced (more malt sweetness to balance the hop bitterness), but still a very drinkable brew.

Glen is listed on this site as an American Amber/Red. My bartender told me it was an Imperial ESB. Rogue’s web site calls it a Strong Ale. Whatever it is, it is good.

This version of Glen is different from previous versions in that it uses Bravo Hops, a recently developed and very unique new hop variety.

Served in a heavy chalice.

Body is a bold and deep orange amber with a thick off white head.

Aroma is slightly boozy, expected at 10% plus as the bartender warned, with a wonderfully ample hop profile, light on citrus and pine, heavy on floral and spice attributes.

Flavor is a menagerie of light fruit, orange, and rose petals with a tremendously long lived bitterness. Medium bodied, very warming, full strength. One beer and I was feeling the effects.

on tap recently at the Blind Tiger. More fine brew from the dependable folks at Rogue Brewery. Poured medium brown and murky/cloudy. Longlasting off white head and spotty lacing created on the glass. This is a very pleasant ale, minty spiceness picked up, hoppy late. Fine sessioner, very drinkable ale.

On tap at Cambridge Common:

I was quite excited for this brew. It was a bit darker than I had imaged after having read a number of these reviews. It resembles a dark IPA, which is actually what it tasted like. Perhaps a bit malty for that style, it nevertheless left my tongue tingling with hop bitterness. At the best, it is a decent "amber" ale, perhaps a bit too hoppy for my taste of that style. The malts were subtle and overwhelmed by the other flavors. A good brew, but nothing spectacular.

The beer pours a hazy burnt orange color with a thick frothy offwhite head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a bitter hop aroma that is balanced well with pale and crystal malts. It's slightly sweet and bisquity. The taste is decent. It has an aggressively sweet flavor that goes down smooth and finishes bitter with a bisquity aftertaste. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium/full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. It is a little too thick. This is a tastey beer, despite the mixed reviews. It's flavorful, but I'm not sure what it is (style).

On-tap at Redbones on 9/29/05. I like the John Stocker so I thought I was in for something special but found this beer to be similar to many attempts of a half-hearted homebrew. Poured brown that glows red. Slight head. Nose was mossy and earthy. Flavor was very malty with hints of old soggy wood coming through. Ever so slight hop bitters throughout but there was no real bite and if I was not looking for the hops I would never even notice. Medium body and just slightly slick to the feel. Drinkable as a session beer I suppose, but nothing special in terms of flavor.

My local pub, the Cock & Bull, was fortunate enough to be a server of John's Locker Stock, the limited-release keg-only run of Rogue beers. This is a re-release of a beer they made for their 15th anniversary.

It is more yellow in color than amber, with a slight head. The smell is nicely hoppy, but a little light for Rogue. The taste is also a little weak for Rogue. This reminds me of a pale ale: A little malty, a little hoppy.

The body is good, though. Nice and substantial.

Overall this is an above-average beer, which is a little disappointing, considering Rogue is my favorite brewery and most of their beers are excellent, not merely "above average."

It is rare that I find a brew from Rogue (one of my fav breweries) that I don't like, but this was one of them. Appears pretty nice actually, a vibrant reddish amber color, decent creamy head. But after that this beer just goes wack. It smells interesting; sweet, malty, with some flowery spicy notes, but these hints come out tasting like candy. Very in-organic and very un-Rogue. Literally tastes like pixie stix or some other powder sugary candy. Definately didn't like that spicing. I have no idea what it actually is that causes that taste, but it doesn't belong in beer according to me. Maybe this is right up someone else's alley, but I really didn't like it. Be warned.

The beer arrived on the table clear amber with an almost white head which lasted darn near forever to lace the glass from top to bottom.

The aroma was fruity with a nice citrusy component which was well restrained. Some of the fruity aroma was a pinapple punch and nice caramel backbone coupled with candy and a very slight floral nature.

The flavor was very fruity with a strong candy impression coupled with a good bittering component that kept the beer from becoming cloying. The flavor contained some citrus and a very nice caramel presence.

The finish was dry with a lasting earthy bittering that emerged and a citrus into the aftertaste with a lingering malty impression. The body was medium full and well done. A very nice beer with only some alcohol warming that occurs post consumption.

Pint at Village Draft House in Raleigh. Entered as an American Amber Ale since that is what it was listed as in the database when a 15th Anniversary offering.

From the Rogue Website:
JLS Release #5: Glen Ale ~ A strong ale named in honor of Glen Hay Falconer. Glen is amber-hued, sporting a dense creamy head, with a fruity, hoppy aroma and big malt flavors that expand on the palette and finishes with a moderate hop bitterness that lingers deliciously. Hedonistic! Glen is made with Simpson Golden Promise & Weyermann malts, Glacier hops, free range coastal waters and top fermenting Pacman yeast.
Specifications: 18.9 degrees plato, 50 IBU's, 77 apparent attenuation, 15 degrees lovibond.

Medium amber, almost the color of cider, nice and hazy. Fluffy 2 finger head stays put for a while before settling into a ring. Crusty lace everywhere.

Aromas are sweet caramel malts, honey, wildflowers, peach, apricot, and a boatload of PacNW hops.

Flavor stands out way more than the nose. It's initially malty sweet, chewy caramel, clover honey. Then there's a ton of fruit flavors, mainly peach, apricot, strawberries, almost like Juicey Fruit gum. There's a notion of coriander and spice. It finishes with very floral, fruity, and a touch of pine hops. Almost reminds me of a Witte bier/APA hybrid. Whatever it is, it's delicious!

Body is medium, with a creamy mouthfeel and a slick, almost wheaty texture. Love it!

The beer had a one finger frothy head and was a clear reddish amber color.

Aroma of piney hops, a large malt sweetness, and maybe some yeastiness.

The beer is medium in both body and carbonation. The mouthfeel is somewhat creamy and slick...strange.

A large amount of bready, malty sweetness is present alongside the moderate hops. Some yeastiness is present and I might be picking up on a hint of rye.

From the tap comes a hazy, light brown liquid. A small head develops and leaves very nice lacing all around the glass.
Smell is of hops (it is Rogue after all), a fruity citrus, malt. All are very light scents.
Taste is much better with a sweet citrus/hops mix and malt shows up later. Citrus lingers with a hint of candied fruitiness. Nicely balanced.
Mouthfeel: light effervescence, a medium/full body and kind of chewy. So smooth, like fine silk or a newborn baby's skin. Drinks like a cross between a wheat and a brown ale but the sum is much greater than those parts. Highly recommend this one.

Sampled last evening on tap at Max's in Baltimore. I was torn between trying this or having a pint of Twisted Thistle. In retrospect, I shouldn't have listened to the bartender, and went scottish instead.
Never seen the anniversary line before, but the name and the tap handle was definitely different from what one would expect from Rogue. Pours a dark red amber with a quickly dying off white head. Slight ring of lacing and not alot of action going on in the body of the brew.
Amber ale? The aroma was strongly hoppy. A blend of several and definitely dry hopped
Herbally and citrusy hoppy flavor. Sweetness and a bite of alcohol in the finish.
Medium bodied brew that finishes slightly hoppy and drying. Drinkable, but one that I would pass on for something better.

Appearance: Pours a dark amber cloudy body with a decent head and some lacing

Smell: Malt predominates, with a dark sweet fruit smell with some hops in the background

Taste: On the front end, the tongue is assaulted by strong sweet dark fruit flavors; quickly, these flavors are joined by the hoppy bitterness; the combination produces one of the longest finishes in any beer I have tasted - I was still tasting it 15 minutes later

Mouthfeel: Heavy and slick-bodied; moderate carbonation

Drinkability: Ultimately, this combo amber-IPA didn't cut it for me; an interesting attempt but ultimately unbalanced; after a while, the sweetness became too cloying

22 oz. bottle. Not available here in Wichita.

Appearance: This hazy, amber-orange beer provided a huge head with no effort at all. The yellowish foam rose up big and took a long time to dissipate. It was chunky and coarse in some areas, while dense and fluffy in others. It was very sticky and left behind a large amount of lace. There was always a decent amount of bubbles floating on top of the beer the whole time I was drinking.

Smell: Great straightforward, balanced beer aroma. It smelled more like an IPA than any of the other catagories that I have seen this lumped into (red, amber, and strong). A large amount of citrus hops cut sharply through an underlying layer of malt. The malt was part roasted and part sweet, with a good dose of caramel and bread as well. Light fruits and vanilla danced over the top. Very nice and very well balanced.

Mouthfeel: Light- to medium-bodied. Very smooth at first, especially on the tip of the tongue. The carbonation became a little rough in the throat.

Taste: The initial hit as the beer hit the tongue was a combination of strong roasted malt and cough syrup. Then the hops kicked in in the middle. They were very floral and herbal, nothing at all like their aroma implied. This carried on well into finish and aftertaste where light smoke and sweet toffeeor caramel were evident. Underneath was a dry, vinuous component that became stronger in the aftertaste.

The appearance and smell kept this one from ranking lower. The flavor was fairly complex, but not overly enjoyable.

Thanks for the opportunity to try this one, Rob!
