2007 Ceramic Bottle
Appearance - Very dark brown with some light getting though giving the beer a nice mahogany color. A fluffy brown head that eventually recedes leaving a very minuscule remain. Some moderate lacing.
Smell - Caramel malts, alcohol, and some piny hops.
Taste - At first my tongue is punched with a sharp bitterness. The fresh flavor of the hops has faded, but the bitter punch is definitely still there. The bitterness gives way to a strong caramel backing that bridges the bitterness quite nicely into the blackberry sweetness that sits underneath all of the strong flavors. I can tell the flavors have mellowed favorably with age - I wonder how this beer would taste fresh.
Mouthfeel - The extreme flavor gives the beer a certain sharpness, but the age on this particular bottle has made it more smooth and easy to take in.
Drinkability - A bit heavy on the palette - I'm not sure if I can taste anything after 22 oz of this beer. Also quite expensive.

Served in a tulip at Stoddard's in Boston.
Appearance: This beer poured a one finger head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a dark crimson mahogany color with no clarity or vision of bubbles. Nice frothy lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.
Smell: caramel, toffee, raisins, fruity, grassy spicy hops, and cherry.
Taste: Same ad above. Based on the smell, I figured it wouldn't be that sweet. Hoppy bitterness in the end.
Mouthfeel: Silky smooth, full bodied, sipper, low carbonation, and a little booze.
Overall: Pretty nice barleywine. Could use a bit more sweetness, but I'm happy.

2008 vintage. Poured from a 750mL swing-top ceramic bottle into my Dogfish Head oversized snifter.
Sangria body, dark and clear with a soapy finger of beige foam. Soft yet rocky lacing, thin viscous tears, excellent retention.
Deep intense malt and dark fruit aroma with a low spicy/grassy hop note as well. Lovely, inviting, subtle, complex, with restrained alcohol and no signs of oxidation. Leather, toffee, and very faint pipe tobacco as well.
Very uniform flavor profile, dry, leathery, but with plum, blackberry, and burnt sugar notes as well. Mild bitterness that blossoms in the earthy clay-like finish. Black bread, and jam are hinted at as the beer warms.
Creamy, medium-bodied, rich, slightly warming, but without nearly as much heat as the ABV might suggest.
Lacks some of the edge of a fresh bottle, but the age has bound together the disparate flavors into a perfectly harmonious whole. Excellent beer for a rainy day...wish I'd cellared some more (I think this could easily cellar for a few more years without falling off too much).

Served on tap into a goblet.
A- Poured a rich mahogany color with off-white soapy head that left no lace.
S- Lots of malt sweetness in the aroma, cherry, sweet, and toffee.
T- Lots of rich and decadent maltiness, big cherry, raisin, caramel, toffee, very bready, and light citrusy notes on the finish. Moderate bitterness, it does have some hop character but is very much malt forward.
M- Very full-bodied and chewy, some warming, and some stickiness.
O- I am not a big barleywine guy and a little goes a long way with me, but this really was a dessert beer. I don't like overly sweet beers so the wallop of hop bitterness kept it from being too sweet for me, but I doubt I would ever want more than 10 ounces at once.
