750ml swing top ceramic bottle poured into tulip nov29 2010
A very dark orange and a little to thick to see bubbles but judging by the solid two finger beige head there's some carbonation in there somewhere. considering the high amount of booze the foam retains quite well and leaves a few partial rings of lace as it falls to a soapy film
S more hops then I expected from a 2008 vintage, I couldn't imagine this fresh some pine and citrus still quite strong, somehow there's a balance here with loads of brown sugar and toffee, the booze is there but pretty well concealed for 11.5%
T fairly earthy and I get some grapefruit rind and a bit more malt then what I smell, the small amount of booze I could smell is gone this is a well made brew
M this is one thick ass beer, enters silky and its a little sticky on the lips, leaves a fair bit behind in your mouth a little gritty even and a nice bitter bite, this is a high point in a truly great beer
D its a fair bit of commitment to crack this one by yourself but I managed it without many issues, I'd never crack a second but even with the massive price tag I'll be buying several more of these to cellar
I could see this one going for another 5-10 years no problem. this was a real treat and it's well worth the 20$ price tag here in Alberta.

Appearance - Pours a hazy, rustic orange with a sandstone colored finger width head. Fair retention, resulting in a thin layer of surface suds.
Smell - Caramel and some notes of copper. hmm.
Taste - Flavors upfront are good; caramel and touches of coffee, along with some light fruitiness... but then high leafy bitterness and metallic twang (like sucking on a penny) dominate the finish and aftertaste which, having drank Old Crustacean many a-times on tap, doesn't seem to fit what I recall.
Mouthfeel - Full in body with low carbonation and light creaminess. Goes down smooth at first, but the astringent finish makes it hard to drink sip after sip.
Overall - Ya know, I found this '12 bottle at a store a few months ago, and then later that day had the '14 on tap. It was pure heaven on tap; perhaps the greatest barleywine I've ever had... and despite this I decided I'd wait to review the '12 bottle. I should've reviewed the '14. This is fair, but the flaws are evident. Whether from improper storage or what, it's not the Old Crusty I'm used to drinking. Too much bitter, metallic astringency in the finish to think this was the intent after 2 years of aging. '14 probably would've netted a 4.5 score; this '12 is certainly not up to par, as you can see by the score. future review for sure, because I've had Old Crusty too many times in the past to know this is a fluke.
