Sampled at the Rogue Public House in San Francisco.
Before my trip to the Rogue restaurant in SF I had never seen this beer before and knowing Rogue, the thought of an Imperial Porter had my mouth watering.
This beer poured a be-u-ti-ful pitch black color with a thick, creamy, rich looking off-white head. Simply gorgeous pour.
Smell is actually rather subtle. Roasted malts dominated, but honestly not a particuarly massive aroma on this one.
Taste was another story - big time flavor and it was delicious. Although I can't compare to a non-cask version, the cask seems to have worked wonders on this one - the flavors really shined through and the mouthfeel was spectacular.
Drinkable? You bet - could have sipped this one all night had there not been several other beers that I wanted to try!
Some info from the Rogue website:
JLS Release #16: Imperial Porter ~ for summer you ask? Why the hell not! This is not your average porter, this is not Mocha Porter. This is a hugh moutful of malt and hops. It has notes of bitter rich chocolate and hints of tar. A new hop variety called Summit was used to give it the perfect hop balance. This Porter is the Creme de la Creme!
Unfiltered, Unfined, Uncompromised. Imperial Porter is brewed with two row pale, munich, dark crystal, chocolate and black malts; and 100% Summit hops. Original Gravity @ 18.7 degrees plato, Finishing Gravity @ 4.75 degrees plato, IBU's around 60!

Enjoyed this 750ml bottle out of a large snifter glass.
A: Pours a dark black-brown hue with a thick dark brown 2-finger head that quickly dissipates and leaves a wispy lace.
S: Strong sweet malty aroma.
T: Starts out smooth but than an alcoholic bite hits you followed by sweet malt. Finsihes very sweet and slightly hoppy.
M: Medium body and medium carbonation.
O: Really good imperial porter. Great flavors and aromas. A little pricey but worth the experience.
