Being a homebrewer, I was interested in the ingredient list but a little sceptical of the high alpha hops used and the number of hops used. I was also interested in how all the malts would come together with the pacman yeast. It turns out that the flavor is dominated by the grapefruit flavor that is common from using too much and too many of high alpha hops. Unfortunately it ruins the potential of the flavor combination that would come out the Munich, Special B, Amber, etc. malts . This beer would be better with time as the hops settle down. The monks wouldn't be impressed as most belgians are very conservative with the amount of hops and the acidity in them. I surely wasnt impressed.

As I continue to rid myself of all bottles, old vintage beers come out of hiding. Nice to see you again, my friend!

From the bottle: "The five layers of malts create a complex, slightly sweet flavor balanced by five different hop varieties."; "12 Ingredients: Two Row Pale, Belgian Munich, Belgian Special B, [obscured], Amber Malts; Belgian Nobles, Chinook, Amarillo, Centennial, Summit Hops; Free Range Coastal Water & Top Fermenting Pacman Yeast".

Upon opening the Oxygen Fixing Cap, I caught a whiff of dried, dark fruit (think raisins, prunes, even blueberries). There was also a good bit of alcohol evident on the nose. My initial, gentle pour, so as not to disturb any lees, still created a finger of dense, light-tan head with good retention. Color was a deep-brown with ruby highlights and NE-quality clarity. Nose had some evidence of oxidation to accompany the other scents noted previously. Mouthfeel was big and almost creamy and it really tasted like a liquid version of the B&W Brown Bread that I ate over the course of the past week. It was prevalent with a molasses flavor, initially, followed by some heat and then a dark fruitiness. My my my. Patience is everything on some beers, this apparently being one of them. Finish was dry, thanks to the Pacman yeast having eaten everything in sight. It might have been able to age just a little longer, but I am glad that I caught it when I did.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a mug glass.

A: The beer is a light brown color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains caramelized malts, brown sugar, dark fruit, some hops and a touch of alcohol.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel, brown sugar and honey. The malt character is very heavy and there are some fruit flavors in the background. The hops presence is mild but complementary and provides some balance. The after-taste is sweet.

M: Smooth and crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, if you're in the mood for this type of sweet beer it's worth drinking for a while.

This one's got some age on it. I think, about 3 years.

Deep amber pour with quite a bit of fine sediment suspended and a frothy tan head.

Aroma is earthy, woody hops, caramel, and the yeast that lets you know it's Rogue.

Well balanced flavors between caramel and chocolate malts and a woody hop character.

This is actually pretty good considering the age. The hops still taste good, no real off flavors and very drinkable.

Found this tasting note in a folded page of my beer book...crazy cause I had a number of these bombers a few years ago and was sure I posted this.

A--deep unfiltered hazelnut brown appearance. Big fluffy taupe head. Strong lacing.

S--really malty nose. caramel and toasty odors. Fresh hop smells, not too floral not too earthy. Balanced as the printing on the bottle would suggest.

T--the hops take the back seat in this beer. The beer is a caramel sweet drink with just a touch of roasted flavors. The hops provide a bit of an herbal balance and a touch of bitterness.

M--medium bodied. Had a sort of oily finish. Smooth drinker.

D--tempting to keep going for a Strong Ale.

pretty sneaky strong ale. Flavors were balance and approachable. Slightly above average beer overall. It was worth the 15 bucks I spent on three of them.

Pours a two finger cream head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Cloudy amber/brown color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Caramel nose. Flavor is some caramel sweetness but mostly a hoppy wood. Lingering hoppy aftertaste. $6.49 for a 22oz bottle from Manchester Wine and Liquors Manchester, CT.

22oz. bomber: This one pours a darker amber/caramel color that is fairly clear. There was a finger's worth of a tan head on mine. Not much lacing, though. The aroma is pretty nice. There are definitely some Belgian characteristics to it. Some yeastiness and breadiness to go along with some molasses. Faint aroma of some dark fruits also. The flavor is quite interesting: there is a lot going on here. There are various flavors competing, yet they are well balanced. Some bitterness, some sweetness, even a touch of smokiness. Very Nice!

Murky brown pour with a frothy tan head. Smells like a yeasty Belgian with hearty malt and some sourness. Expected a Belgian Ale with the name, and was surprised to be hit with a dumptruck of hops on the first taste. The hops eventually gave way to a smooth malt and yeast finish. Creamy mouthfeel was pleasant and didn't detract from the beer. I really don't know what to make of this. Its like a IIPA with yeast.

Pours a deep copper to almost ruby in body with a generous off white head which is fluffy and full of big carbonation bubbles that lingers for a while leaving a hearty trail of lacing in its path.

The sweet malt wafts from the glass with the hop presence hitting the senses upon second inspection with hints of pine and orange or grapefruit like citrus. Each time I revisit the aroma, I get hit with a different malt/hop combination.

What a varied flavor offering, some caramel, some hop bitterness, a slight roasted aspect, and even something woody or piney.

Medium body with generous carbonation and a lively palate that really offers the senses great variation, the mouthfeel is just as diverse as the aroma and taste.

While I may only be good for a bomber of this here and there, this is just a fun beer to drink, a crazy variation of hops and malts, just as the bottle promised. This is a cool beer, and one I hope to enjoy again.

A: Poured a nice ruby red color with a dense compact white head.

S: The nose brought about some sweet roasted caramel, warm muffins, and toffee.

T: The flavor was toffee and caramel with a dried piney hoppiness. The hopping was dried citrus with chinook and centennial hops give this a nice dry piney bite. The finish was smooth while finishing dry. Overall a decent attempt by style.

M: medium-full, soft and creamy with a light carbonation.

D: Moderate drinkability, would drink it but wouldn't necessarily seek it out.

What do you get when you throw five malts, five hops, water and yeast together? You get another crazy Rogue beer: Monk Madness Ale. It's fermented with their house yeast, so make no mistake: this is not a Belgian-style Ale, just more Rogue goodness.

The hefty foam leaves a trail of sticky lace most of the way down the glass. The clarity of the garnet-colored brew is stunning when held up to the light. Insane, pine-like, mango, tangerine and orange blossom hop aroma, with levels of complex malt underneath. Smooth, front to back, with a full and lush body. Intricate malt flavors lock together to form this multifaceted flavor. Roasted, but not burnt. Malty, but not sweet. Toasty, but not grainy. Just amazing. The hops aren't shy, and they wrap around the malt and spike with a bitterness at the middle. Lots of hop fl avor. Mangoes and tangerines, piney and herbal. Alcohol was hidden during the first few sips, but then preceded to warm the mouth and show off a bit of fruitiness. The malty finish has a long, lingering hop flavor that the taste buds just can't shake. Good brew. Try with some aged, dry cheddar for a great pairing.

Still around for now I guess. Bought the 22 oz bomber at Spirit Haus. Pours a delicious brown amber color, creamy lacing and a decent, light coffee-color brown head. Strong caramel, coffee, toffee aroma, very sweet. Chocolate tastes wrapped in nuts flavors, however, I felt they could have been stronger in intensity. The mouthfeel hinders a bit some of the flavors. Dry finishes but a little too thin. Overall, pretty darn good.
