Had this beer on tap at Barcade. I don't know how they got it... I think it was by accident. It's usually only on tap at the brewery out in Oregon. I'm a lucky guy.
This was not a very impressive IPA. The most distinguishing feature about a good IPA, for me, is the nose. It's got to smell like fresh hops! Mine smelled of caramel malt and diacytel. It really was not very hoppy...
You never know though. Perhaps this keg was sitting in the warehouse for a while. Probably was if it's a one-off beer.
At any rate, it was a drinkable brew; well balanced and nice bitterness to it. I don't think I've ever been disappointed by Rogue; they're one of the best.

Tasted this at RFD in Washington DC during their wet hop tasting. The story behind this beer was that when they brought in all the fresh hops the malt for brewing dead guy ale was all ready to go. They didnt have time to remove it and replace it with the malt bill for their Hop Heaven so they just use the Dead guy malt bill in brewing this with wet hops. This appeared a hazy dark amber color with a small light tan head. Nice clumps of lace were left around the glass as this was consumed. The aroma had strong floral bouquet to it mixed with a fairly strong malty caramel scent. A bit more balanced than I would expect a beer like this to be but the malt mix up explains that. Taste starts off sweet and malty before the hops come in bringing in bitter citric and piney flavors. Aftertaste is a bittersweet one that is dry. Mouthfeel is about medium with and oily feel to it. Fairly good drinkability but not if youre looking for that hop fix. Overall a decent beer in its own right but not a great IPA.

This is another one-off beer from Rogue that I had at their brewery in Newport, Ore. Here's how they describe it: "On Labor Day 2004 John Maier picked up a 300 lb. load of fresh Newport hops at the Annan Hop Farm near Mt. Angel. The hops were picked just before he arrived, and were in the kettle at the brewery in Newport by 4:20 pm. Hop Heaven Ale will be ready in late September and served only on tap at the Rogue Ales Public Houses. These Newport hops are very limited and only 1.5 acres are grown by only one hop grower, John Annan."
On to my review: My lovely server, Natalie, told me about this beer. I had noticed that previous Rogue brews were made with organically grown Newport hops and I couldn't find a place to buy them. Now I know why: they're a Rogue exclusive, she says.
This beer has a beautiful amber color with a short, light head. The smell is floral and hoppy. What did you expect with a name like Hop Heaven?
This is another beer for hop lovers. It's nice and bitter, but lighter in body than a double IPA. The bitterness is acidic without being overpowering. There is a butter-like flavor in this beer that I noticed in other Rogue beers at their brewery. This flavor may be too delicate to survive shipping to Florida: I haven't noticed it in bottles bought here. The aftertaste is herbal and floral. This beer must also be seriously dry-hopped.
I "downgraded" the drinkability only because of the high bitterness. This beer might etch your teeth if you drank enough of it!
Get to a Rogue pub and have this beer since once it's gone, it's gone for good.
