The Rogue Mocha Porter could easily become one of my favorite all-around porters. I really like these meaty, dense beers, and the dark coffee notes that dominate this offering definitely set it apart from it's peers. $8.99/sixer at Austin's Central Market.
The Mocha Porter started off with an impressive pour. A dark head of thickly compaced foam sits atop a thick, black body. Very opaque, not a photon of light coming through the viscous liquid. Nice. Decent nose, giving the strong impression of Colombian coffee with a tinge of Hershey bar in the background.
The taste virtually mirrors the scent. Think strong, black coffee tinted with dark chocolate. Good hop presence offsets the dense malt structure. Very complex and interesting. I really liked the way the Rogue combined the coffee and chocolate influences in this beer. Everything was balanced and understated. There was never a point where one flavor just dominated the rest, it all meshed to near perfection.
Good mouthfeel, good carbonation level. Very drinkable for the style. I'd pair this guy up with a nice red meat dinner, or serve it afterwards as a dessert beer. Excellent job.
