For those who like the taste of porter and the taste of mocha, this is the perfect marriage. Pours to a soft, creamy, golden head that doesn't last very long but that is not surprising for a black beer that has substantial body. All this capped off by just smidgen of hops (bitterness) in the aftertaste.

Look: Pours a VERY deep, dark brown color. Light does shone through the edges of the glass. About a two finger head that slowly dissipates to just a thin layer.

Smell: Very malty with a hint of chocolate, vanilla and coffee. The smell is good, but seems weak.

Taste: Very roasted malt flavor. Only a small hint of mocha, or any kind of chocolate and coffee.

Feel: Smooth and creamy, with a medium body feel.

Overall: I expect it to be better. But it's a good, drinkable beer.

Look: Pours very, very dark brown. Could only tell it wasn't black when I held it really close to our kitchen ceiling light and could see the brown hues around the edges. Thin tan head, took a few seconds to appear and then disappeared quickly. After a sip or two just had very light lacing around the edges.

Smell: Coffee, chocolate, charcoal. As advertised, seems promising based on aromas.

Taste: Not what I expected, more bitter than sweet. I taste the chocolate notes, but it is a bitter chocolate like baker's chocolate. Very much like a dark coffee flavor. After the initial flavors subside there is a really strange, almost tangy aftertaste that I do not care for, some kind of biting sour residual flavor.

Feel: Pretty dry beer, almost chalky. Carbonation very average, more of a creamy carbonation than anything. Bitterness remains after each sip, similar to a dry hoppy beer.

Overall: I'm disappointed by this beer, but I see it is rated pretty highly on BeerAdvocate. The look and smell are great but there is something really offputting about the second wave of tangy, sour flavor once I waded through the initial coffee and chocolate notes. Not sure if it's just the batch I got or whether that was part of the plan. I'll manage through the six pack I picked up but there are a lot of coffee or chocolate porters I prefer to this one, generally something a little sweeter.
