12 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into a nonic true pint glass in high altitude Castle Rock, Colorado. Expectations are high given the style. Reviewed live.

A: Pours a two finger head of lovely cream lacing, good thickness, and pretty good retention. Colour is a solid ruby-black.

Sm: Light mocha and coffee, heavy cream, hints of chocolate, caramel, and light nuts. A moderate strength aroma, and a pleasant one.

T: Mocha throughout, with a bit too much coffee in the third act. Nicely creamy, especially on the open. It's well balanced and built. The roasted barley foundation is nice, but I almost wish this was a stout so it could be more pronounced. That's more just personal preference. The finish contains the caramelized malt alongside the emergence of naked coffee. When the coffee isn't concealed by the cream and mocha, it's too bitter, subtly affecting the balance in an undesirable way.

Mf: Biscuity, pretty thick, smooth, creamy, and wet. Suits the flavour, but as a stout fanatic I'd like to have more dryness and coarseness. Still, it's good as a porter.

Dr: This would be excellent on nitro-draught. I'd like to see the roast increased/improved. I'd have it again, but preferably not out of the bottle.

12 fl oz bottle served in a pint glass:

A - Pours a dark brown/black color with a towering tan head. The retention is amazingly good and the head is creamy and inviting.

S - Roasted barley, cream, coffee, bitter chocolate make up the nose. It's surprisingly mild, but good nonetheless.

T - Opens smoothly to a bit of cream and roast, with a bit of coffee. Where's the mocha?? It's balanced quite well, with a good bit of bitterness throughout.

M - Very smooth and very wet. Works well.

D - A nice easy drinking porter, but nothing to write home about.

A: Poured a nice brown head, the thickness of a thumb, that dwindled down too a small coating of the surface. Beer was a nice, solid black color.

S: Some unexpected sweetness there paired with some roastiness.

T: Starts off with the bittersweet chocolate paired with some roasted malts. As the flavor develops the roastiness grows in its intensity and the espresso element starts to show itself in the flavor. Some burnt roastiness lingers. The opening flavor profile was my favorite component and I wish it wasn't so quick to exit.

M; Pretty smooth in texture but some carbonation is present. Medium bodied.

O: A decent porter that is dominated by the roasted malts. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to buy this one again, though I wouldn't be opposed to drinking it again. It has it's attributes I just think there are other beers I'd rather go to first.

A: 1 finger brown head. Molasses to black color. Carbonated.

S: Molasses, chocolate and licorice. Hint of alcohol.

T: Very chocolatey upfront. Tad bit molasses flavor and slight espresso finish.

M: thinner then expected although still slightly chewy and full bodied.

O: This is an ok beer. Tastes good but I'd pass on buying it again.

Appearance - Dark cola colour with thin beige head. Bubbles are present (almost looks like cola in the glass).

Smell - Chocolate aromas are predominant with hints of lemon and caramel sweetness.

Taste - Bittersweet chocolate and roasted coffee flavours. Bitterness is not too overpowering; bittersweetness lingers in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with high amounts of carbonation, yet also some creaminess to this one.

Overall - Very nice mocha porter from Rogue. Was expecting more sweetness, but pleasantly surprised by the bittersweet chocolate flavours (as opposed to semi-sweet or milk chocolate taste). Would certainly buy again.

This is a very nice, classic American porter. Lots of great chocolate and roasted malt in the nose, with hints of coffee. With each sip a delicious roasted malt and chocolate flavor rolls through the mouth and ends with a pleasant crisp bitterness that lingers on the tongue. Can't say it's the best porter I've ever had, but there's certainly little to complain about. Very solid beer, very flavorful, and very drinkable at 5.0% abv.
