Beer pours to a beautiful black with a tan head, foam clings to the side of the glass and dissapates after pouring. Smells very roasted and almost astringent. The roasted malt is very aggressive, but is severely beaten down by hop bitterness. The beer has a very fizzy feel to it, which really is none too pleasant in a porter.
The roasted malt was huge in this beer, and right on, but the bitterness and effervescence were way to aggressive in a porter, in my opinion.

I guess I'm out of the concensus here. Yes, there are nice chocalate/roasted coffee aroma and flavor undertones. And I'm surprised that there aren't more mentions of it's high hop bitterness. These are all good things. But they just don't seem to meld together the way I would expect from Rogue. The mouthfeel is spritsy(?) with all the components competing against each other instead of complementing each other. Still very tasty, just not great.

Mocha Porter indeed! Lovely chocolate tones...I love to swirl the thick sediment at the bottom & dump it into the glass...like viscuous mud!

Very bold with tons of coffee/dark chocolate notes. Be sure to check for freshness, however, because this beer goes downill fast with age.

This is one of my favorite beers. You really couldn't do a much better job of capturing a mocha flavor in a beer. The taste and drinkablity are great. Smouth mouthfeel and it finishes pretty clean for the abundance of mocha taste. All in all a highly drinkable beer.

Appearance: Has a nice nearly black body with a think dark one inch head.

Smell: I could not get my nose out of this beer as it had a profound chocolate smell that was both sweet and dark at the same time.

Taste: The taste was a lot like the smell. Sweet chocolate upfront that turns into a bitter dark chocolate/roasted coffee taste.

Mouthfeel: This was smooth but bitter and leaves a dry taste making you want another sip.

Overall: Overall a delicious porter that stands true to its name with a chocolatey and decadent body that finishes with a black roasted coffee taste.

Very dark in appearance the ruby highlighted Porter is lost to this blacker than night addition. The head was creamy but not particularly stout.

Lots of dry chocolate malt hits the nose with hints of coffee and roasted malt. The taste follows suit with dry chocolate leading the way and roasted coffee holding after the taste. Velvety smooth on the tongue and dry in the mouth, the feel is much like the taste in its composition.

Overall, this is really tasty and a great experience but I missed the Mocha portion that is held in the name. No worries, as the flavorful stout-like presence is more than enough to get you through.

Served on tap into a shaker glass

A- Poured a dark brown color with soapy mocha colored head that left minimal lace

S- Some smokiness, roasted malt, sweet breadiness and caramel. Pretty nice aroma, not all that strong though

T- Some smokiness, roasted malt, bittersweet chocolate, breadiness, and caramel. Really balanced flavor profile, however there is a watery quality to this beer that mutes a lot of these flavors from being more bold

M- Lighter bodied, soft carbonation, and quite watery on the finish

O- Some really nice balances flavors, the hint of smokiness was quite nice. The mouthfeel and watery qualities of this beer bring it down for me though.

Presentation: On tap @ the Isaquah Brewhouse (Rogue), Isaquah WA...into a cone pint...

Appearance: Very dark brown with a clinging tan lace that seems to stay for a while.

Smell: Mildly sweet in the nose with hints of charcoal, roasted malts and a touch of hops.

Taste: Silky smooth with a nice medium bodied mouth feel. After the luscious mouth feel come the flavour which is quite malty ... light acidic twang from the roasted malts, a little dark roasted coffee/chocolate flavour and an underlying toasted biscuit taste are balanced with a perfect combo of hop and roasted malt bitterness. The lingering after taste is of faded burnt sugar, drying grain and a slightly warming alcohol. A wonderful yet delicate hop character helps to round this brew also.

Notes: Yum! There are good porters and then there are great porters ... this one goes down as a great one, no doubt!

Poured pure black with a foamy tan coloured head.

The smell is sweet malts and roasted coffee.

The taste of this is very strong mocha coffee, chile, sweet malts and some bitterness.

This beer is full bodied, slightly creamy and with medium carbonation.

I really like this, would be good for a desert, certainly pack a punch in the flavour department. One is probably enough though.

Deep brown, near black colour, one finger of tan head, good amount of lace on the glass. Smell has tons of roast and coffee, bittersweet chocolate, big healping of earthy hops as well. Taste is full on burnt coffee and roasted malt, chocolatey, fairly high bitterness both from hops and coffee, floral hop and toasted malts in the finish. Light-medium carbonation, light-medium body though thin at points. A good roasty porter with tons of coffee and chocolate but still this has nothing on the Founders Porter, that being said I would still gladly drink this again.

For my money, this is the richest, best porter I've had to date. Despite its sort of flat appearance, the mocha smell and taste is strong and that's just what I wanted. It's a little creamier than some other popular porters, which is something else I appreciate. Last time I visited the Rogue alehouse I had the Hazelnut Brown and followed it up with this - tasted exactly like a chilled hazelnut coffee. Lovely!

This beer will catch you off guard. First off I suggest you don't smell this beer because it may stray you away at first...but don't let that fool you. Smell is a really sweet, but not that great of smell. The up front taste right when it hits your lips and tounge is really sweet and hoppy...AGAIN don't let that fool you..the after taste is crazy good. Very Mocha/coffee like. Lots of Chocolate too. This beer is pricey, but I recommend you give it a try if you are into dark beers.

Had on tap in a pint glass.

Arrived pitch black with a one finger tan head.

Aroma had plenty of roasted malt along with some milk chocolate and coffee.

The taste is black coffee and roasted malt lending even more coffee characteristics. There is some milk chocolate in there as well all ending with a light bitterness.

Overall, a decent porter although I though the mouthfeel was a bit watery. I would have it again, though.

At Rogue in SF. Reviewed from notes.

A: Rich mahogany color. Light head that quickly jets. Light lacing.

S: Dense coffee nose, with a light roasted malt backbone. I don't detect any hops.

T: Much like an English porter--there's a soapy theme throughout like a porter from across the pond. Lots of coffee, roasted malts toward the middle, and some wet hop tones in the finish and linger.

M: Light to medium body, with a soapy texture and some light carb.

First had: on tap at Rogue, Portland, OR

Poured a dark brown-black with a small but cream tan head. Aroma of roasty malts, cocoa, coffee, and some herbal hops. While the flavor profile contains many elements of a typical coffee porter--roasted dark malts, coffee, cocoa--there was a definite herbal presence throughout, very reminiscent of a black tea, presumably from the hops used. This gave a dry and somewhat bitter finish. Medium body, nice balance, not too coffee-y, and pretty drinkable overall.

On tap at WOB last night, from notes

A- By the time i got it in a tumbler pint head was a thin almost soapy tan rim, black body not visible carbonation.

S- Bittersweet roasty chocolate, slight smokey very appealing.

T- Flavor follows nose, with roasty palate and actual mocha flavor. Dark chocolate w/ some hop bitter to make the coffee pop. smokey towards the finish and slight bitter in the after taste (like dark roast coffee).

M- Medium body due to carbonation somewhat creamy while dry, dry in the finish.

O- Would be a great beer in a series but i wouldn't want to drink this as a session. Really enjoyed it and plan on getting a 6 pack if i ever find it.

A: Dark brown body with a with a bit of a beigge head that left some wisps of lace on the sides.

Smell: Has some chocolate, bitter coffee and expresso, and richer toffee notes. Nothing exotic, but nothing to complain about

Taste: Coffee dominated, somewhat bitter, with lesser notes of unsweetened chocolate. Slight amount of grassy taste on the end for some reason..

Mouthfeel: Mediumish body with soft carbonation.

Drinkability: Wish this one had a bit more heft, not a favorite, would pass on it next time..

having had this beer maybe 10 times it is always one of my favorites but i just never got around to reviewing it. served on tap at barelys and into a pint glass.

nice dark brown pour with a good inch and a half of dark tan head that hangs on top of the glass for what seems like forever before it falls back down to earth. very solid look i have to admit. aroma is deep coffee and sweet chocolate notes that just seem to layer themselves on top of each other. smooth, sweet, and lightly bitter it coats the tongue and offers such a smooth, and easy flavor it comes across simply great. touches of light vanilla and a lightly dry and sweet finish seal the deal for me.

overall one of the most solid and dependable beers that there are.

Had this on tap at World of Beer.

Poured a medium-amber, hues of dark buckwheat honey, white head that faded quickly without a trace. I thought they had mistaken this for the Rogue Amber, which was on tap also, but a quick waft told me this was indeed the Mocha Porter. A light hazelnut/toasted almond aroma blended with less than assertive coffee beans and an almost bock-like malt character in the background. Faint earthiness as well. The mainstay of the flavor department is a nutty cocoa flavor than seems rather muted, giving more of the stage to the light brown sugar and caramel backbone. The coffee flavor just dies. Not really what I wanted from this. The body is rather thin for a porter. I feel like a porter should have a fairly robust body (ie Flagship Porter or Fuller's) but this is pretty weak. However, it makes for a highly drinkable beer. It's not bland, nor is it thick and settling in the stomach, which makes for good, easy drinking. I would love this beer with a Garbage Plate.

Had this on draft at my local pub. Black in color with a great coffee/chocolate smell. I am usually not a fan of the burnt flavor in porters but this beer was a great mix of the smoky, chocolate and coffee flavor. While I enjoyed it as a treat it wouldnt be something I could drink all night.

My first review via CrackBerry...

Pours with a short tan head over a deep brown body... Not much retention or lacing.

Aromas of roasted malts - reminiscent of coffee beans, along with some burnt biscuit. Fairly rich aroma for a porter.

Flavors bring some nice citrus hoppiness to the field to play with the roasted malts. Bittersweet chocolate in the middle. The bitterness is strong in the aftertaste, and there's a pretty strong film left on the palate.

Mouthfeel is great for the style - just enough carbonation, and decent bite that distinguishes the porter from the stout.

Drinkability is solid, and maybe just a touch less bitterness in the finish would take it further. Great overall example of the style.
