Bottle poured into pint glass

This smooth porter was great from start to finish!

The aroma is of malt, coffee, and hints of chocolate. The taste is of coffee, hints of cocoa, and finally classic burnt malt characteristic of the style. As the beer warms you can feel more of the coffee.

This is truly a beer that may find its way to my fridge one day.

Shot glass-flight, originally reviewed 11/1/11

Pour-Some effervescence, light black with some brown tint, thick off white head, some lace sticks.

Nose-Huge coffee and some bittersweet chocolate, a lot of roasted aroma.

Palate-Hint of sweet at first, very bitter, moderately sour. Everything fades and chocolate covered espresso beans come forward, very roasted, nice complexity.

Body-Heavy, smooth, sort of dry finish, some effervescence on the tongue. Good stuff, highly recommended if you like a closer to burnt taste, yet not overwhelming.

Poured into a standard pint glass. A dark, almost tar black beer after it settles. A dark creamy head of froth sits on top that dissipates some, still leaving a pretty decent layer of head as the beer goes down. Sticky lacing. The beer smells of bitter chocolate and roasted malts. The taste of burnt malts and a bitter cocoa taste is present. Also a biter hop presence to finish. The mouthfeel is just abut right for a porter. Overall this beer doesn't stand out as exceptional, yet at the same time it's not overpowering from Rogue, which makes me like it. But for the price, it's unlikely I'll revisit this very often, if ever again.

[Poured into an generic tulip glass]

B: [12 FL OZ]The bottle doesn't do much for me, though it seems appropriate for a porter with it's black label. Little information, including an absence of abv%.

A: Very dark brown body with a red hue, beautiful large fluffy mocha head(moderate dissipation), and underwhelming lacing(spotty).

S: The usual smells you get from a stout/porter. Roasted sweet malt, chocolate/coffee/toffee notes.

T: Roasted sweet malt and toffee dominate, with faint bitterness. Others flavors would be caramel and vanilla.

M: Smooth and dry, med/light(watery) bodied, low/med carbonation, and decent alcohol presence(apparent, but doesn't intrude).

O: It was good, but one can do much better. The body hurts this the most with it's watery element. Defiantly a good beer, but not great. Worth a try and I defiantly wouldn't turn one down.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of chocolate, coffee. Taste is of roasted malts, some coffee, a bit of hops are present, just a touch of sweetness. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall is a good quality beer.

Appearance is dark brown to black, rich light brown foam. The smell is strong on the coffee side. The mouthfeel is ok while the beer is in your mouth. After the beer leaves your mouth there is a strong coffee taste on the back of the tongue, which is good if you like that. The taste is good as porters go, but we feel it falls short of the other great porters out there. Overall if you like strong coffee in your beer you will like this beer. This is a muffin beer. enjoy...BR

A - Pours a very dark brown with excellent ruby red highlights and a couple fingers of froathy beige head, retreats to a webbing. Good looking porter.

S - Nose is malty with chocolate and roasty coffee notes. Not the best part of the beer.

T - Very nice. Up front with some roasty chocolate and then some malt and bitter hops and leaving a lingering coffee/chocolate.

M - A bit thin for a porter and it can be a bit biting at times with the dark malt and hops.

O - It's pretty good, appearance and taste a highlight, and really what else do you want?

From tasting notes 10-4-11
Poured into a snifter

Appearance: Very dark brown to black pour with a nice 2-finger light tan head that has nice retention, replenished by a steady stream of bubbles. Leaves spotty lacing.

Smell: Not too impressive--A nice toasty malt backbone and some coffee notes along with toffee to round out the nose.

Taste: Can taste some roasty malts with a strong coffee taste. The finish is crisp, bitter, and tastes strongly of coffee. Mostly just tastes like coffee. Bleh.

Mouthfeel: Medium to medium-thin body, high carbonation. Crisp finish, more wet than dry.

Overall: A decent beer but honestly it just tastes like a carbonated glass of cold coffee. The aftertaste tastes exactly like I just drank a cup of Joe (after each sip of the beer).

Serving - Bottle

A - Very dark, head around 1 finger, some minor lacing but it doesn't stay, looks how a porter should

S - Rich coffee aroma mixed with chocolate, also smells a bit hoppy

T - Starts out with a nice chocolate and malty taste. Also can taste the coffee, its strong but not overwhelming. The after taste is a bitter mocha taste, but not unpleasant if you like coffee flavoring

M - Very smooth and pleasant

O - It is exactly whats advertised, if you want a good mocha porter look no further. If your not big on coffee and porters this is one to avoid. I like both things and thought this was a solid brew

Appearance- The tawny head is a thick two fingers that falls quickly. There is some residual soapy lace on the side of the glass, but it does not stay. It is very slick as it pours and settles into a dark chocolate and opaque body.

Smell- Coffee roast bread malts, and even the slight bite of grassy hops. It is a mocha porter smell, but not that interesting.

Taste- Well, it is all mocha. I mean, coffee all the way down. It overwhelms the flavor and finishes with a strong bitterness. The bread malt does give it a little sweetness.

Mouth feel- It has a medium body and it is a little bubbly, warming helps smooth this thing out. That bitter coffee finish interferes immensely.

Overall- Mocha porters are probably not something I will really be pursuing again. This type of beer is a little too bitter and overwhelming for my tastes. To Rogue's credit, they have a product that is exactly as advertised.

Pours the color of slightly used motor oil. Thick foam head and great lacing.

Smells like toasted malts and some cocoa and vanillin.

Taste is refreshing but bold. All the flavors balance well and accent each other. Bitter hops balance with the malt, then the secondary flavors chime in with sweet caramel, coffee, chocolate, and vanilla. Leaves a pretty heavy bittersweet aftertaste. Great multi dimensional flavor.

Mouthfeel: it seems kind of in between cream and crisp. I'd prefer it to be one or the other.

Overall: Excellent brew. The flavor has been tuned to perfection.

Poured into a standard pint glass. Very black in color. Just a bit of light brown highlights at the bottom rim. Not much of a head at all. What was there was under a finger and mocha colored. Dissipated very quickly and leaves no lace at all.

Smell is of dark roasted malts. Coffee, chocolate and brown sugar. I am also pulling some hops. This kind of smells like a Black IPA.

Taste is kind of a wreck. There are some overly roasted coffee flavors that mix oddly with the bitter hops. It kind of tastes like a coffee dipped orange popsicle.

Mouth is very light and watery. This doesn't have a good porter mouthfeel at all. Kind of reminds me of a BMC attempt at the style.

Overall I was really let down by this. With so many great and sought after Rogue beers I picked this out because I didn't see how any brewery could screw up this style. I was wrong. Not the bottom of the style but if you can buy just one bottle it's worth a shot. If you have to buy the whole 6-pack.. not recommended.

Bottle from kjyost, cheers. From notes.

A - Poured black with red edges, two fingers of brown, filmy head. Spotty lace and a finger of retention.

S - Chocolate was strong upon intial opening but calmed and moved to a touch of coffee and some roasted notes with a cocoa element too.

T - And here's that classic weak porter element! Bad cocoa powder, dusty, chalky, cola, and roasted notes.

M - Mild carbonation, medium body with a decent bitterness.

O/D - Not overly drinkable with that chalky, powdery feel. I can't understand the hype for low strength porters and stouts when they so commonly taste like this. Sorry, just didn't like it.

A – Pours out very dark brown, almost black. The head isn't anything special at about an inch.

S – Heavy coffee (as you would expect) with a hint of light vanilla on the edges.

T – On the first sip you'll get a strong, coffee flavor - like a well roasted coffee brew. On the back end you get some of the chocolate and vanilla notes, but you have to actually look for them.

M - Not overwhelming on the tongue, nice carbonation, and a fair amount of body

O – This is a tasty coffee porter that delivers without complications. It's drinkable, but yet has enough complexity to keep you interested. The ABV is understandable, and you'll easily be able to drink a few of these without getting overwhelmed.
