330ml bottle, BB date of mid 2015. Poured into a flute glass.

A - very dark, almost black. Free of sediment. Pours a thin fizzy pale brown head than lingers as a 5mm lacing on the glass.

s - rich roasted malts, a huge smack of coffee, molasses and cocoa rich chocolate. Faint whiff of dates.

T - roasted malt, mild hop bitterness with a sour turkish coffee taste towards the finish. Dark chocolate overtones are muted at the beginning, until halfway through.

M - Texture is dry at first, but with a slight slickness to the aftertaste. Light bodied - feels a tad watery compared to other porters. High carbonation for style.

O - good, but does not distinguish itself from other porters. The coffee is more present in the aroma than the taste, but I did enjoy the sourness (being a mediterranean coffee lover). Hoppy bitterness, while present, isn't as noticable as other Rogue beers.

This is one brew that has been sitting on my to-drink list for a while: Rogue Mocha Porter. Rogue do some pretty wild limited release brews (such as their Voodoo Doughnut Pretzel, Raspberry & Chocolate Ale) but it is the year-round releases which are the bread and butter for any brewer worth their hops. Will it be up there with the mightiest of Stouts, i.e. Founders Breakfast Stout? Because really that is the one to beat for this and any Porter out there in the Beerosphere.

Poured from a 355ml bottle into a nonic pint.

A: A deep dark murky brown that no light shines through (checked it with my trusty petrol station LED flashlight) with a foamy 1cm mocha coloured head. 7/10.

S: Dark chocolate notes mingle with vanilla, brown sugar and hints of prune. Not getting any coffee characters in the aroma with this Mocha Porter, which is surprising given its name. 7/10.

T: Very much an American styled Porter with the above noted flavours, and a bitter herbal hop finish. The coffee comes in to play now with that distinct roasted bean touch towards the end. Another sip presents an even more espresso note. Hmmm, it starts out sweet and chocolaty, brings out some herbal cacao nib bitterness and the coffee flavours become more pronounced, nice. 7/10.

M: Mid to light bodied with a dense carbonation. 7/10.

D: It’s no FBS that’s for sure. However I did enjoy my time with RMP and if I wasn’t a Humulus lupulus lover (that’s hops people) I would have downgraded my score due to that hop note in the finish. This Porter does indeed fall short of the glory that is FBS for many reasons: flavour, mouthfeel, the aroma, etc... but sometimes a rare change from what you know and love is nice. 8/10.

Food match: This is a classic after dinner cigars and chocolate brew ;)

I'm a porter fan in general, and even though I'm not a coffee drinker, I enjoyed this mocha porter. The coffee flavor wasn't so strong as to make me think I was drinking that instead of beer, so that's a plus in my book. It's a bit on the dry side but nothing too intense, and it's pretty well balanced as a result. Good middle of the road porter.

Pours a finger of tan head on a black body.
The aroma is lots of chocolate and roasted malt. Wonderful.
The taste has moderate chocolate sweetness, off-set by a moderate bitterness that builds through the profile. Finishes with a touch of milk.
The texture is softer and medium bodied.
Enjoyable.

Well balanced, slight bitterness which I'm partial to. Perfect amount of a mocha note.

The aroma at first gives off lots of brown sugar with a prune-like fruitiness; there is also some caramel, bready malt, milk chocolate, and dark roast coffee. The head is dense and deep tan; the body is a very dark brown but garnet highlights come through against the light. The flavor includes roasted malt and dark coffee with some tart fruitiness; the bitterness is husky and resiny; there is an undertone of malt sweetness. The husky, bread crust-like finish lingers. The body is somewhat light with a sharp bite from the carbonation.

Smells great, but the flavor doesn't follow the nose very closely. It's still complex and intense with a resiny bitterness that provides an American hop character.
