Serving Type: bottle poured into clear glass beer mug.

Appearance: dark brown. not quite opaque. when held to the light there are hues of red. tan head that dissipates rapidly. some lacing.

Smell: sweet dark malty smell. hints of cocoa and mocha.

Taste: toasted malts with some cocoay bitterness. the toasted malt flavor is not all that robust. the cocoa bitterness is a persistent after taste.

Mouthfeel: a little carbonated prickliness on the tip of the tongue. semi-full-bodied.

Overall: not a bad porter, but not the best either. the after taste is good, but the initial impression is not great.

From notes, reviewed 1/28.

12oz bottle poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint.

A: Pours a dark clear brown with tawny and red transparent highlights...off-white/tannish head quickly retreats...minimal lace.

S: Roasted malts, bitterness, coffee right up front...almost a burnt character. Chocolate emerges as it warms. A touch of earthy bitter hops.

T: Follows in unison with the nose...a touch of bitter chocolate combined with all of the roasted malts and coffee. Good bitterness & light hopping; while the coffee and roasted characters aren't overwhelming, they are still pretty prominent.

MF: Medium body, and quite dry.

O: Really quite pleasant, a nice dry, roasty take of a porter and a good change of pace from sweeter beers.

12 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass

A: Very dark, almost black. a Ruby Brown color when put close to light. Had a creamy, tan, 1.5 finger head that lasted only a few minutes. Some decent lacing on side of glass

S: Not a strong smell, some roasted malt.

T: Malty sweetness, Notes of chocolate and coffee are evident.

M: Very Smooth, slick feeling in the mouth. Medium to heavy body and low carbonation.

O: A solid Porter, great beer for a winter night. Would purchase again for sure.

Pours like a perfect Porter/Stout, dark with a nice but not over the top creamy head.. It has a nice aroma, nothing too much, not hppy, not chocolate, not much of anything distinctive.
First sip was nice, but then I lost something. I was hoping for a bit more on the mocha or at least smokey flavors
It was hard to even find the mocha in this one.
I have a love/hate relationship with Rogue brews. There are so many that I rate at the top and then there a few that are not my favorites.
But I guess that is why we are taste and drink different beers

S: Caramel malt and dark fruit.

T: Moderate sweetness and light bitterness. Coffee and chocolate. Nice roasted/charred finish.

M: Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Creamy.

Poured into a Hoegaarden hex glass, this porter has very dark cola color that gets to a dark ruby around the edges. After a vigorous pour, the caramel colored head built up about three fingers or so before receding rather quickly. Minimal head retention and lacing, just little bits here and there.

The aroma is a mix of both bittersweet and milk chocolate, mild grassy hops, caramel, and subtle hints of coffee. While it's more or less in the middle, the sweetness just seems to grab my attention a bit more. The flavor starts out with creamy milk chocolate, caramel, and light coffee. Next, earthy/grassy hops that honestly seem a bit metallic in taste, give this beer a little bite. The hop flavor gets pushed back pretty easily by all the dark roasty malt flavor in the finish, leaving you with a creamy semi-sweet chocolate aftertaste.

Although this is a creamy mocha porter, it seems to be a little light in body, almost a little watery for the style. That being said, obviously this is going to be way heavier than a pilsner.
