This beer poured a clear copper color with a rocky head that quickly fell. The aroma is malty and smoky. The taste is smoky and malty – pepper is noticeable but not overbearing. There is a slight pepper aftertaste, but not a burn. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and seems a bit oily. I’m surprised at how drinkable this is….I might not have several in a row, but it is nicely balanced and not intimidating in the heat department.

Nice reddish amber color with thick tan head (that retains well).

Sweet malt aroma and the peppers' spiciness comes through, too.

Mmm, very well balanced maltiness, hops and (at first) a very subtle pepper. Well laced, making the next swallow all-the-more inviting. Drinks very clean & 'bright' for a beer with this degree of complexity.

I'll be honest, I expected more chipotle kick, but nonetheless, this beer is very solid, very drinkable, and could easily qualify as session brew.

Poured from a 12 oz. silk-screened bottle to a pint glass. I've had this one a couple times on-draught, but this is a first from the bottle. It's nice that Rogue introduced 12 oz. bottles in 2006, though the larger 22 oz'ers are still available also.

A: Pours a very pretty red-amber with a slight chill haze. Visible carbonation rises thoroughly through the glass to a fizzy head of large col-like bubbles. Within seconds the head is gone; only a bubbly smudge of film remains, off-centered.

S: Pouring, there was a discernable whiff of peppery heat. Where did it go? When I smell the finished pour, there's virtually no pepper aroma, only a faint malt and some dry hops. Either my nose doesn't work (possible), this beer is old (also possible) or the peppery aroma I thought I'd get from this doesn't exist. Regardless, smell was disappointing...

T: A pretty nice malty red ale or pale ale infused with some chipotle peppers. I remember the pepper spice & heat being more pronounced on-draught and again I wonder if this bottle is aged a little or if this is simply the more subdued result one gets out of the bottle. A decent flavor of malt with some crisp hops and a gentle chipotle pepper flavor that ends very smoky.

M: Moderately crisp with decent carbonation. A little lasting bitterness with some mild smokiness lingering in the finish. Light-medium body.

D: Good but not one of my favorites. A sort of novelty beer that I've had one or two excellent examples of (one by Calapooia comes to mind...). This isn't bad but isn't one I'd have very often either...worth a try...

At first, I wasn't too impressed with this, but the more I drink it the more I like it.

Typical red ale/amber ale appearance of a dark amber to copper colour. Head is vigorous and takes sometime to settle down. It leaves a decent layer and sticks to the side of the glass in clumps.

At first I thought this smelt like a generic albeit well-done pale ale: a good blend of malts and hops. But the more I poured, the more the beer warmed and the more nose I got, I could smell the heat of the chipotle. Sweet, smokey and spicey. No hops at all: the smoked chipotle overwhelm them, and even the malts are subdued by the pepper.

Initial tastes were of malts, but there is a slow creeping smoky spice flavour. I can definitely taste the peppers. As I swallow, there is a definite pepper taste, and the aftertaste leaves a lingering, faint burning in the back of my throat. Not unpleasant by any means, but rather, it is quite fitting.

This feels a bit thick on the tongue for the taste. I think this could benefit from a bit more carbonation, considering the spicy aftertaste. This is not something I would try to drink more than one of...the combination of flavours make this a potent brew.

Bottle purchased from Union Square Trader Joes.

A-Orange brown and cloudy when poured into a tall thin mug. Nice four finger head has some serious staying power.

S-the nose on this is very bready and there is a nice NW hop profile as well. If i did not know the beer had chilis in it I probably would not be able to discern that quality. As is I do detect a faint spice.

T-This tastes more like a brown ale or a light pale ale. I really do not taste the chipotles at all here. Some nice malt up front followed by a lingering bitterness. After going through about half of this there is a mild spice sting in the back of my throat.

M-light body, light carbonation.

D-I was expecting more out of this as I love both Rogue and Chipotle peppers. I was hoping this could be an Ingredient in my chili as the chipotle should have added to the effect. This is basically a dumbed down Rogue offering.

The appearance is a hazy autumn bronze with minimal head. The smell is very subtle, a hint of malts and not much else to speak of in the nose category.

It has a crisp, malty flavor. Roasty. I only notice a chipotle trait after a few sips, deep in my chest. Quite warm inside, almost heartburn-like.

Average body and carbonation. This one is good at first, but too warm for the lack of intense flavor that I had expected.

Poured a light copper color with off-white sticky head. Velvety lacing.

Rasins, chipotle peppers (of course), smoke, and caramel in the nose.

Nice savory, smokey, and peppery flavors with plenty of caramel to balance those falvors out. Slight crisp and clean hop flavors detectable. Some bite from the peppers in the finish.

Smooth and light mouthfeel. Extremely drinkable in a wierd savory kind of way. Paired very nicely with a Portabella burger. I will buy again.

Pours a very clear copper/orange (way to go Pacman yeast). Thin, compact head dissipates extremely rapidly to nothing (likely due to chipotle oils in the beer). During sipping, there is no lacing that clings to the glass.

Scents of toffee, faint caramel, slight floral hop presence.

Medium to highly carbonated brew hits the palate and helps to spread the flavors around. Thin, but crisp mouthfeel. I would like a little more malt presence up front to balance the 35 IBUs of cascade and willamette hops. But, I do initially taste some earthy caramel and slight nutty flavor. The chipotle presence quickly exerts itself as the liquid warms. This pepper taste lingers for a long time on the palette after each sip, especially in the back of the mouth.

Although I couldn't drink pint after pint of this interesting ale, I do appreciate the creativity inherent in the recipe. The chipotle flavor is not overpowering and is quite interesting. I will purchase this brew again and have already started thinking about fun food pairings.

Well, I've been a fan of Rogue beers for many years, so I expected a little more from this ale. It made me almost nervous that it was made with chipotle peppers; but it really didn't have an overly spicy taste. The "hotness" shows up on the finish a little. It is clean, and pure...and that's classic Rogue style, but the body was also light and a tad simple. It would be easy to pound a few of these; that is, if you like peppers.

I've had this bottle for a few months and was waiting until I was in the mood for something different.

Poured a dark orange / amber color, hazy, with a head and fading into minimal lacing with in a minute or two (probably a result of the oils from the peppers).

Smelled sweet and malty, clean with a very slight hint of something but if I didn't know there was peppers in this I wouldn't have been able to pick it out as such.

The taste was immediately malty sweet with hints of caramel and almost zero hops. The pepper taste came across as a light smoky flavor in the after taste. Very nicely balanced with the sweetness of the beer. The body of the beer seemed a bit thick and syrupy but it went very well with the smokiness. This beer would go great with pulled pork or any BBQ.

Very nice beer. I'd buy this again specifically to drink with a BBQ meal. Rogue once again pulls out a different, fantastic beer.

The Appearance is orange and red, a little bit hazy. Smells of sweet roasted peppers and the taste is similar. Very interesting flavor. Spicy and sweet with roasted flavors which become more intense as the beer is consumed. Bold beer, not an everyday drinking beer but should be a treat on occasions.

I had this bottle at Gullifty's in Bryn Mawr, Pa.
Appearance: Translucent amber brown color, with a couple fingers of head. The head produced good lacing and had decent retention.
Smell: The smell was rather hoppy, kind of what you would expect from something with Chipotle peppers in it.
Taste: Suprisingly, this spicy hop aroma was not followed up with anything in the taste. There was a strong malt background, an apparent hop forground, but without the spice.
Mouthfeel: Kind of stiff.
Drinkability: Certainly a great beer.
Don't drink and review.

On draft at the Public House in Portland, the Chipotle Ale is a clear, orangish amber head, with a small, quickly fading white head that left no lace.
The aroma is really muted, soft malt with a touch of cascade hops...try as I might, I can't find the pepper.
This tastes like a smooth and mellow amber ale, which it is. Nice balance between the malt and hops, a tad salty. The Chipotle isn't really evident except for on the finish, with a nice peppery tingle on the back of the throat.
It is medium bodied and a bit seltzery, bicarbonate?
The drinkability of this was surprisingly high. I've always been really skeptical of chili beers ever since first reading about them in Papizan's homebrewing book. I have to say that I am really pleasantly surprised. I didn't get chance to session with this, so I can't say if the pepper would build, but from what I had, I wanted more.

The beer poured a crisp amber with a decent head that diminished to a ring. The aroma was mostly malt with some pepper spiciness to it. The taste was mostly dominated by hot peppers, but they showed themselves the strongest when you hold the beer in the mouth. The beer is rather light and surprisingly smooth if you can take the heat. This is one of the most interesting beers I've ever had, just not something I'd drink all that often.

Wonderful pour. Dark hazy amber, dark orange slipping to sunshine light orange, topped with a soapy, lacey head that sticks around for ages.

Smells of smokiness and lightly sweet malt. Strong, but not particularly complex. No big hints of meat and cheese like you get in a good smokebeer.

Tastes great, much more complex than the nose. Big salami and charcoal in the front, moving into a lightly sweet big malt middle and then the nodes of smokey yellow cheese kick up, moving into perfectly spicey but light pepper. Not at all hot, just peppery. Wonderfully blaalnced. Pepper burn lingers lightly.

Appearance: poured a deep amber/auburn color , with a medium sized head of offwhite foam.

Smell: A rich maltiness is shadowed by a smoky jalapeno spice, a scent almost phenolic or like a band-aid in a good way.

Taste: Nice full malty body is tasted for a moment before a good dose of smoke kicks in, then lots of nice pepper flavor fill the mouth, the heat of the jalapenos takes a moment to set in but it does so nicely with rich warmth and spice on the tongue and throat, just a bit of hop bitterness to the end of the sip, the heat gets more intense as i drink, but fades nicely, a pleasant heat.

Mouthfeel: medium to full bodied, spicy nudge to the tongue.

Drinkability: Definatly one of the most unique beers i've ever had. Im really diggin the smokey flavors, the peppers and the heat this brew has. I would definatly reccomend this to any chile head and i can't wait to try it with some spicy foods, especially mexican/ spanish.

Pours opaque burnt orange with a slight head and no appreciable lacing.

Aroma is definitely full of smokey chipotle, but it is matched with strong enough malt to give some balance.

Taste is surprisingly mild up front with sweet caramel maltiness and hints of citrus fruit. Then the smokey chipotle flavor makes an appearance, but doesn't completely dominate. The finish holds a touch of hops and a decent sting of peppery heat.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth.

This is by far the best chile beer I've had. I expected the chile flavor to dominate everything, but instead it is a pleasant addition to the balanced malt and hops. A very nice change of pace.

A - Amber color with a crystal clean and nice head, but not much lacing.

S - Smoke dominates the nose for this one. But its not a real strong smoke aroma.

T - There is a certain sweetness to this beer that is over taken by the smokey spice, peppers in here.

M - Light body, sharp carbonation. Actually burns like pepper, and has a dry finish.

D - One a night is about all I can handle. For myself this is not a session beer. Might go nice with mexican food.

Pours dark orange color, medium sized head with some lacing left behind.
Strong roasted malt aroma, hint of hops maybe some pepper but I might be looking for it.
The flavor is of a really good hearty ale. Hint of caramel sweetness, lots of roasty malt, an occasional touch of smoke, a swirl of hops and then finishing with a little chili bite. The chili flavor builds the more I drink, but never to more than a pleasant afterthought.
Rather enjoyed this one, think it would be a good compliment to certain foods.

Pours a nice fizzy head that's white. The color is almost an orange-like brown. The head doesn't retain too well and and doesn't leave a full lacing behind. The smell is spicy, but smells a bit like tobacco at the same time. The taste is tobacco like as well and has the same spiciness as the smell. The spice is unmistakeable. It's about like taking a drink of watered down tobacco spit. It leaves me a little nausious. The mouthfeel was a little fizzy. Overall I will never try this style again, it makes me want to throw up.

I've been revisiting a few beers post smoking and picked up
a bottle of Rogue Chipotle Ale at Esser's. A nice pour got me
a thick head over a reddish brew. Carbonation was very active,
and the nose was malt, grassy hops, and PacMan yeast. The
flavor is malt up front with grassy hops in the finish with an earthy
something under everything. There's nothing obviously peppery
in the flavor per se, but it makes it's appearance in the aftertaste.
You get the same warmth in your throat and stomach as you
would from eating chiles. The mouthfeel is fairly dry, and there is
quite a bit of lacing left behind as the glass empties. A very unusual
brew.

Poured a hazy amber color with an inch of light tan head, quickly vanishing into a little soapy ring.

Smell is all smoke, almost like a peace of smoked cheese.

Taste has a nice bit of toasted malt up front with a strong smokey flavor, bit of pepper spicyness. The spicyness of the peppers seems to increase it as you drink it, but it still yields to the strong smokey taste, more like a rauchbier than a chili beer.

Mouthfeel is light with a dry finish.

Overall light and easy to drink, enjoyable beer for those who like that chipotle smoked taste.

Appearance: Color is amber/orange with white creamy head. Above average head retention and light carbonation.

Scent: Pleasant sweet, toasted maltiness of the Harrington dominates the bouquet. A gentle swirl and deep inspiration reveals the smoky and spicy aroma of the peppers.

Taste: The malt flavor encountered initially is similar to an ordinary bitter or English pub ale. The hop bitterness balances this initial malt flavor. The smoked pepper essence is more of a presence than the dominant flavor. The spiciness however does dominate the aftertaste and lingers on the palate. Several gulps allows the spiciness to accumulate.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, rests on the tongue before running to the recesses of the mouth.

Drinkability: Unique, easy to drink. More a novelty then session

Because of it’s roots as an amber ale, a rich caramel malt backbone blends with the chile flavor and keeps it in check. Still, the chipotle largely dominates and leaves a mild and spicy bitterness. An easy mouthfeel makes for good drinking and along with its strong carbonation, this brew cleanses the palate and really washes down food. This can feel little rich, however, if drank by itself.

The beer pours an amber/orange color with about a half inch off-white head. The aroma is weak, but I can smell roasted peppers and a bit of malt. It tastes like spicy roasted peppers and has a hoppy finish but it's not as spicy as I expected. The heat/spice does get stronger (and tastes better) the more of it I drink, but the spicyness isn't overwhelming at all. Mouthfeel is light, and it's oily and smooth. Drinkability is good too, it goes down easy. All in all, it's a decent beer. I'd definitely drink it again, it was a pleasant surprise because I really didn't know what to expect with this beer.
