Pours a orange amber color with a bit of lacing.

Scent of caramel and bready malts with a hint of spice and honey.

Mild brown-ale type flavor, caramel and biscuits, with a noted spice bite to it.

Light tingle of carbonation.

Pretty decent spiced ale, actually better than I expected, pretty good flavor and worth trying.

Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance – Served a golden amber colored brew with a one finger white head. The head faded rather fast to leave a good level of lacing.

Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a malty and ready smell. Mixed with these aromas are some hot pepper as well as a smoky and char like aroma.

Taste –The taste begins more on the malty side. This more bready taste is soon met with some smoke and char flavors more toward the middle of the taste. The chipotle in the name is, for the most part , absent up till the middle of the taste, at which point some light hints of pepper heat are detected. At the end the spicy flavor gets a bit stronger (although never really all that potent) and leaves a light spicy heat aftertaste to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The beer is on the average side in terms of thickness with a carbonation level that is average as well. A good compromise for the more malty and spicy characteristics of the brew which overall create a good drinkability.

Overall – The beer has some good flavors and feel, but is not really something I would ever pine for on any real occasion. Worth a try, but nothing exceptional.

Had on tap.

Appearance was a slightly hazy light reddish brown.

Nose of smoke and pepper overpowered everything else. There was a little malt in there but it was behind the roasted peppers.

Smoke up front in the taste along with a little bit of jalapeno flavor. The heat comes in about midway through the taste and lingers through the finish. It is not an extreme heat but the more you drink the stronger it becomes. A nice malty backbone supports the smoke and peppers.

Overall, a very unique beer but it succeeds at what it is attempting. A tasty chili beer that remains balanced.

Pretty meager 8oz pour on-tap at Winghearts. Amber/copper color with light haze. Rich head with impressive lacing. 4.0

Toasted malts, whiff of smoke, and a sweet grainy spice in the aroma. Not much else. 3.0

Crisp hoppiness in the taste with a dusty chile bite in the background. Very familiar with the Pacman Yeast flavor profile, and that musty fruit ester is here, too. Less spicy that I remember. Less smoky, too. Still a fine brew. 4.0

Medium-to-light body with a wetness that swigs and swishes around nicely. Not coating or dissipating. The carbonation is very mild. 4.0

One o'those 'thumbs-up' brews from Rogue. Give 'er a try. 4.0

A: single finger head, little retention on a clear amber body.

S: fresh baked bread and lots of yeast with a mild chili note.

T: nice maltiness which fades to chile and chipotle but this one isn't hot. The spiciness is there but there is no burn or overwhelming chili aftertaste compared to others.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: I like how the chipotle adds to the taste and aroma but doesn't dominate either. Hands down the best chili beer I have had. Just the right amount of heat and chili flavor with nice malt balance.

On tap at Beer Revolutions.

Appearance- Pours a amber hue with a 1/4 finger width of foamy head.

Smell- Earthy hops with a nice smoky character.

Taste- Nice smokiness in this brew. The chipotle plays a lead role in this one. There is nice balance of citrus and hops. Has a nice dry finish.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied with light carbonation.

Overall- A nice spiced brew from Rogue. I enjoyed the smoky character with the easy drinkability. Worth a go for those that like this type of style and are adventurous enough.

on tap at Rogue Ales in Newport - served in a ROGUE pint glass

A - transparent golden amber body; off-white head

S - weak spicy hoppy smell

T - spicy up front with a light malt flavor and a touch of hops; the finish features chipotle peppers and a strong bitterness

M - medium body; average carbonation

O - The flavor is a little underwhelming, but otherwise pretty good for the style. Try one if you're in the mood for a spicy beer.

First had: on tap at Philadelphia Bar & Restaurant

Poured a slightly hazed copper with a thin layer of delicate bubbles for a head. Malty aroma, very light, with a touch of smokiness; not much in the way of chipotle in the smell. Toasted malts on the tongue, a bit of smoke, and just a mild sensation of hop bitterness. I didn't really get any chipotle until a few second after swallowing the first swig, but after that, the slight tingle was with my for the rest of the session. Light-medium mouthfeel, and pretty nice to drink if you don't mind a little extra zing in your beer.

Pours a clean orange-ish color with an off white head. In the aroma, smokey and spicy. In the taste, smokey and spicy, and some dry yeastiness. A small bite and medium bodied mouthfeel, with a dry spice and small burn in the aftertaste. Smokey and spicy, great for mexican food.

A very interesting break from the norm. The smokiness that the chile's add to this ale makes it highly worthwhile. Not overpowering in any way, the bite compliments what seems to be an already very drinkable brew. Deep honey coloration, with just a bit of head. It came as part of a flight and the head/lacing may have lessened before it arrived at my table. Smoky smell, with just that subtle hint of jalapeno. Consistent taste. Went extremely well with the BBQ I was having, and was a extremely nice warm up to the RIS that followed.

Had this on tap at The Thirsty Monk. Poured a copper color with an off white head. Nose is very peppery with some malt and promises the chipotle that is expected. Small amount of malt in the taste with a well balanced chipotle flavor... not too much, not too little. If you like what's promised by this beer, it delivers nicely. Still, not the most interesting of brews.

On Tap at Rick's Wifes Place, Jeannette PA.

Appearance: dark bronze copper colored. Head was non-existent and I blame this on the pour.

Smell: smoke from the chipotle peppers.

Taste: smokey taste upfront and goes down a little harshly. Hops not apparent but should not be. This is classified as a chili beer but really resembles a smoked beer derived from the peppers. As beer warms, taste becomes less attractive as the chile peppers come to the forefront.

Overall: Drinkablity takes a hit as the beer warms. Better served ice cold.

This beer is quite interesting. Pours deep golden color with a nice white head and great lacing. Smells of fresh fruit, light malt, and spiciness. Tastes of cooked fruit, slightly roasted malt, and roasted peppers. the spiciness isn't overbearing, but does increase the more you drink. leaves a nice warm feeling in your mouth and throat. quite an experience!

On tap at Old Bay in New Brunswick, NJ. Reviewed on my Droid.

Arrives a deep copper color with minimal head. Aroma is very malty with a hint of smokiness... first sip is Wow. What a nice unexpected smokiness to this brew. Very much like a rauchbier. A very pleasant suprise. There is no pepper hotness to this at all like I was expecting. I would certainly get this interesting brew again.

A: The beer is amber in color and has a small head.
S: The aroma is very faint, but there are some hints of hops, malt, smoke and peppers in the nose.
T: Some flavors of chipotle peppers are detectable in the taste, which is somewhat bitter. The overall taste isn't very spicy, probably because they are balanced by the underlying malt.
M: It feels medium bodied and crisp on the palate with a medium amount of carbonation.
D: Nothing really stood about this beer, although I might try it again just because this is a unique style. I think this beer would work better paired with food than drinking it by itself.

A- Pour is cloudy with a red hue, slightly cloudy

S- Lots of smoke on the nose, no hops or malt detected. Smells like an Islay scotch, peated. Slight hint of spicy jalapeno tang.

T- Thin taste, once the smoke and mild heat fades (rapidly), the beer has no finish. Dominantly smoked flavor, as with the nose. Would not know it was from a chipotle unless I was told so.

M- Very light and highly carbonated. Like drinking a pilsner.

D- Enjoyable for one or two at a BBQ or something, would not recommend more than that, simply not interesting enough.

Served in a pint glass at the Bronx Ale House.

A: Pours a clear, light orange/red. One finger tan head that sticks around and laces a bit.

S: Smoky, but not overpoweringly so. A good amount of sweet malt to balance it.

T: Not at all what I had expected. I'm not picking up too much heat in this beer at all. It's smoky, and there's a definite an adobe/chipotle undercurrent throughout. But it's also quite malty, a mellow sweet bread flavor. Some tingly hops, too.

M/D: Carbonation is pretty low, and mouthfeel is fairly light. I liked the taste at first, but by the end, the smokiness wore out its welcome and I was ready to switch. I think this beer has a lot of potential when paired well with food, but it's a bit much on its own.

On draft at the Rogue Ale House, Portland, Oregon.

Poured a medium copper hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was decent retention and good lacing.

The smell featured a light pale malt with a trace of smoke.

The taste consisted of meaty, smoky flavors; buttery malts and caramel.

The mouthfeel was of medium fullness.

Overall an interesting ale. The light smokiness was pleasantly surprising.

On tap at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA.

Appearance: Pours a reddish mahogany, with a small amount of persistent head and plenty of lacing.

Smell: Faint, in general, with hints of smoke and spice, as well as some sweet malty notes.

Taste: I ate nachos right before having this beer, and I'm now regretting it--tastes slightly hot, VERY peppery. The jalepeno taste is not particularly overpowering, but was a little too much at that point for me.

Mouthfeel: Interesting. Very light and smooth, but ends with a kick with the peppers, which are primarily present as an aftertaste. The lower level of carbonation works really well to compliment the spices--I have a feeling that much more would have just made it far too fizzy.

Drinkability: Not too great for this one. To be fair, I was a little tired of the spicy taste already, but I don't think it would be easy to drink regardless. It's not a bad beer--in fact, it's a pretty interesting one--but it's more of a novelty than anything I think I'd actively seek out again. I just feel like something's missing...

Had this beer in a 4oz sample glass at the brewery as part of a sampler.

A-amber body with a nice white head

S-the pepper is definately evident but not the smoky scent I would have expected from a chipotle

T-chipotle flavor is there along with some malt

M-medium

D-Okay. I don't know why this one bummed me out so much. I didn't really feel any heat from this. I also expected alot more smoke flavor and scent.

Drank on-tap at the Sunset Grill & Tap, Allston, MA
Served in a pint glass

The beer poured a crystal clear, crimson-amber color with a tight, foamy, bright white, one-finger head that left a thin sheet of lacing all down the glass.

The aroma was smooth and sweet. Rich caramel malts dominated. A touch fruity. Hints of butterscotch came through as well. No chile/spice quality was discernable however. Enjoyable, yet not very complex.

The taste was more interesting than the aroma. Sweet caramel malts came through strong up front. Fruity in the center. Chipotle spice notes appeared in the crisp, clean finish and lingered into the moderately hoppy (piney) aftertaste. On a scale of one to ten, the spiciness was a "three" (at best).

The mouthfeel was medium bodied with a fine, mild carbonation.

Although I enjoyed this beer, it definitely could have used more heat and flavor from the chilies. Nevertheless, this would make a perfect accompaniment to some nachos and spicy salsa.

I had no idea what to expect upon buying this one. The aroma definitely has chipotle with the usual hops. Pours deep amber with a medium tan head. The taste is actually very mild. Hoppy and malty, the chipotle takes a back seat. You can taste it, but its not like that horrible. It wasn't to enjoyable.

I love Rogue beers and I really like spicy food, but felt that this beer was just awful. It was too hot and actually tasted like Chipotle, or like it had to be spiced with jalapeno. I had it on tap and had to force myself to drink this beer like I was back in rugby hazing. I'd rather have a tequila shot, and I hate tequila.

Had this on tap at the Rogue public house in Portland.

Pours a nice darkish golden color with a decent head.

Smell is a combination of sweet malt, smoke, tobacco and chili pepper.

Taste is quite unique. First sip is a tad sweet, nothing too crazy followed by steady warming. The smokiness of the chipotle becomes more and more noticeable. Very interesting and quite drinkable and balanced.

YOu know what you're getting yourself into when you order a Chipotle Ale and this one was quite good. I'd definitely order it again but I'd need some time in between...

This is my first "spiced" beer I have ever tried and The only reason I even got this is to try all the Rogues I have never tried. I was not impressed at all by this one. Poured a red color with a good 2 finger head on it. Pepper comes out in the nose right away and that's pretty much all im pulling out of this one. Taste as it smells, very peppery, very spicy especially in the end...good med. bodied feel to it. I will not drink this again.
