I picked this bomber up at Brewer's on the Bay: a 22 oz. brown bottle with no freshness or best by date that I could find it.

The beer poured a slightly cloudy copperish red with a 1/4" or so of off whte, large bubbled head. The head retained pretty well and left some fine lacing on the glass. The beer smelled uniquely smokey with some maltiness as well. The flavor was smokey too. The beer has some maltiness to it at first with a very slight spiciness to the finish to as well. A unique flavored beer for sure.

It's a medium bodied beer that boasts of a nice crispness without a overly filling mouthfeel and a seemingly low alcohol content (I couldn't find the ABV for this one anywhere), which combined with the taste make it a pretty drinkable ale. A good beer for this category, and I would return to it if the moment or the desire strikes.

There's a small, cream-colored, sticky, still head. The beer is a clear, rusty copper. Swoopy lacing. Nose is smoky! with a little fruit and a touch of chocolatey malt. Smoky, milky front leads to a big, milky, malty, sweetish, thick middle. The finish is lightly spicy, smoky, nutty and bitter. Some nice citrusy hops poke through. Wow. Very tasty: a meal in a bottle. Quite smoky and milky. Only subtly spicy, with enough malt spine to support it. Really, really tasty.

Crystal clear amber color with a thick 3" head. Some spotty lacing develops through the drink. The aroma is of peppers and malt. The flavor is a unique blend of malt, smoked peppers, and mild bitterness. The smoked flavor is mild and pleasant, definitely not overbearing.

Light to medium in body. Smooth and mildly crisp at the start, and finishes smooth and smokey. I sampled and reviewed this before my meal, and then during my meal of spicy tacos and refried beans. The drinkability alone is very average, and with some spicy food was also average. This may pair a little better with some spicy BBQ ribs because of the soft smokiness.

22 oz bottle pours a cloudy bright amber color with a small creamy off white head that leaves some lacing in my glass. Smoke aroma, hot peppers followed by smoke and wood flavors, I can feel the heat after the first sip. Medium bodied with a creamy smooth mouthfeel, has a lasting spicy pepper finish.

Pours a clear ruby amber with a medium tan head, well carbonated. Aroma is sweet and malty, not much in the way of herbs or peppers to be found.

Taste is mostly malt, toasted and bready-sweet with a touch of herbal dryness. Nothing immediate in the way of chile flavors, as one would expect, but a subtle, smokey vegetal chile element builds over time. No perceptable heat at all, at least by me. Yawn.

Mouthfeel is medium and clean, easy to drink. The chiles lend a nice earthiness but it would be hard to characterize this alongside other chile beers. A good choice with the chipotles but you could double or triple the amount (chipotles are among the mildest peppers) and get a much better beer.

oh man this beer is awsome .not the killer hops like most of the rougs ive tried but no matter. pours a nice deep ruby color. ON first smell i dont really smell to much spice, but its there. malty goodness. theres some pretty good lacing in the glass but then its rogue so.... you really know there are peppers in here after you have drank the beer you can feel that tingling sensation on the tip of your tounge like you just ate some spicy food.a+++ great beer

A good revisit to this beer. The pour delivered an excellent amber color with a frothey, impressive head retention. Bold amber, toasty, malty-sweetness set the foundation for all of the creativity to follow. As the beer progresses, the intensity of the chilis rose to pronounced levels, but never dominated the beer. This occurs equally in aroma and flavor. The character of the brew alternated with great chili flavors one sip and solid amber flavors the next. The body is firm, but not heavy; creamy, but not thick. The beer lightened in the end with a linger of smoke, heat, and jalapino flavors. A nice complemet to the beer. Though a solid brew, drinking this in quantities is problematic for me.

These beers are always an exciting, yet apprehensive experiment; both for the brewers and the drinkers. Bright copper colored with some distinguishable amber highlights. Quite carbonated with a dainty head that fades quick. Lacing is impressive though. The aromas are somewhat of a bloody mary, with the spiciness, pepperyness, and vegetable characters. Tastes is similar as well; throw in sweet barley malt, earthy hops, smoked vegetables, and clean ale yeast. Mild barley sweetness and celery-like vegetables up front, then chile and hop spiciness hit in the body. Chile heat is assertive, but not over kill. The beer tapers into a dry chile vegetable flavor. Not bad, i've had worse.

From a 22 Oz Bomber.

Pours little hazy red to red amber colored ale.

Smell is malt and jalapeno tang on the first sniff. More effort reveals some dark roasted malt and a little spicy tickle from the peppers. Smoke comes next as you really concentrate on it and it starts to smell like a barbecue. There is also the scent of jalapenos baked into cornbread here. There is no mistaking the wonderful scent of roasting Chili peppers; I love that smell! This kindles for me memories of Chilie roasting time in Albuquerque New Mexico.

Taste is dry and SMOKEY! Smokey enough to show a lot of other smoked beers how to do it. A very good flavor of Jalapeno here that fruity and tart flavor is unmistakable. This brew accentuates the flavor of dried Chipotles perfectly; the fresh version would have more sweetness from the flesh of the pepper. Nice solid bitterness in the finish that mimics perfectly the slight bitterness you get from a little bit of charred pepper skin in fresh roasted chilies. Only possible improvement would be slightly more sweetness but I suspect those sugar just would never escape getting munched by the yeast. This isn't hot at all to me but I grew up in the Southwest and was eating hot peppers before I became conscious of my own existence.

Mouthfeel is very good.

Drinkable as all hell! To me THIS is the ultimate Barbecue or Tex-Mex beer. Or I would drink it anytime; I am a major Chilie Head.

very nice color: deep copper

a hot BBQ aroma meets my nose (i bet this beer would be great as a marinade) along with a minimal maltiness

at first i thought "hmmm...kinda one-dimensional," but that thought waned as i progressed towards the bottom of my glass. that being said, the beer was definitely concocted to highlight the peppers: understated hop character, low sweetness and low carbonation (though i would think that more CO2 would elevate the perception of heat), which contributes to a quick-dying head

because malt and hop essence are scaled back to accaentuate the peppers, it would be easy to call this brew a novelty. but such is the nature of something so experiemental that isn't outstandingly successful. props to rogue for trying new things

neat, cool, a beer with chipotle peppers in it. i won't be racing to track another down

Rogue Chipotle Ale is a dark amber color with just a little haze. There is a 1/2" off-white head that falls off to a spotted cap. Little lacing.

The aroma is smoky and woody. There is kind of a rubbery smell. I get kind of a V-8 Hot and Spicy tomato juice kind of feel out of the aroma. The hops are detectable in the background.

The intitial flavor is a fairly intense smokiness. This is balanced with a light roasted taste and a good hop bite in the finish. Salty with some hint of tomato (first for a beer description for me!). The spiciness doesn't appear until long after the liquid is swallowed. A nice warm feeling from the peppers coats the mouth.

This beer struck me as having a somewhat oily, medium-bodied mouthfeel. Good carbonation. The beer was semi-low on the drinkability scale for me only because this beer is not my bag. A 12oz. sample would have sufficed for me. Very unique and worth a try.

My first chile beer. Crazy Ed's Cave Creek Chili Beer is sold at Discount Liquor (with a note exclaiming, "Back by popular demand!"), but I've been too apprehensive to try it. So Chipotle Ale (if it was Dogfish, it would be "Chipotlale") it is.

Looks like a standard red/amber ale. It's, well, reddish-amber, cloudy and translucent. Almost no head, however.

Smells intriguing. It's malty, like a regular light-colored ale, but there's definitely a smoky, chipotle twang. I like it.

The taste is similar to the smell, in that it's clearly based on a regular old amber/red ale, malty and unexceptional. But then...chipotle! There's an oddly satisfying, peppery bite to this beer. It's not overpowering, but not subtle either--just right. I certainly wouldn't expect peppers and beer to go well together, but the chipotle finish on this beer is very nice, and certainly unique. Mouthfeel is solidly thick. You really could drink a lot of this beer; the smoky, peppery finish remains a surprising development with every sip, and is never overpowering. A regular beer with an ace up its sleep. Definitely worth trying.

Appearance: Mostly clear rich Amber color that aggressively poured with a small head that disappeared pretty quickly to leave a very thin ring around the glass.

Aroma: You get the smoke at first pour. The aroma is really reserved from what I was expecting. There is a bit of spiciness, but the smoke mixed with a bit of malt is the main aroma component

Taste: This is an interesting beer. The peppers are a more dominant component in the flavor than in the nose. I would ideally like it to be both. In the flavor, you get an initial smoky impression that fades way to an almost "minty" feeling in the back of your throat. Instead of bittering, you get a warming that isn't alcohol related. I think that it would benefit from some more aggressive carbonation.

Opinion: This is an interesting beer. It is clean, and well made to showcase the spice addition. I am not sure at what point the Chipotle peppers were added to the mix, but it would be nice if they were more present in the aroma...and added more fresh flavor.

Bomber from Luca's Liquors in Ellisville, Mo. Pours amber light tan head. Aromas of toasted malts and faint smokiness. Smoked Chipolte flavors come across as phenolic (band-aids) Hop bitterness only slightly noticed at finish. Medium body with thinish mouthfeel.

I recently had an Amber Chilli Ale from Flatbranch BrewPub in Columbia, Mo that was much more cohesive in its tastes.

About half way through this beer I got some relief as warming peppers finally overwhelmed the impression that I was drinking beer out of a box of Band-Aids. Not what I expected from Rogue a lot more drinkabe than Cave Creek's but the flavors don't meld and like Crazy Ed's it seems to only be a novelty brew.

07/22/05- On tap at the Rogue Ale House in San Francisco, CA

Presentation- From the tap into two 4oz sampler glasses.

Appearance- Light amber pour, very slight head and light lacing. Not sure how a chipotle ale is supposed to look.

Smell- Smoky and spicy.

Taste- A bit of smoke taste followed by a fairly strong pepper aftertaste.

Mouthfeel- Medium carbonation, spicy aftertaste and warming sensation.

Drinkability- The only time I would have this again is with maybe with some mexican food. This would probably be an excellent pairing. Not my kinda style, but blows away Crazy Ed's by about a million-fold.

Hazy reddish mahogany color, with a short tan head that disappears quickly with only a trace of lace.

The aroma is malty with a hint of roasted, smoky peppers.

The taste is smoky over a decent malt base with a prominent vegetable tone (roasted peppers). The finish is mostly smoky roasted peppers with just a moderate pepper heat.

Smooth, fairly easy to drink with the heat almost like an afterthought that lingers on pleasantly. This should be a great accompniement to Tex-Mex or southwestern cuisine. The chipotle is mild enough to complement spicy food rather than compete with it. Definitely worth a try.

Bottle Inspection: No date, no abv, but ingredients, Plato, IBU, AA, L, and pairing suggestions.

Aroma: Mild aroma, slightly sweet with a citric edge, maybe a suggestion of peppers.

Appearance: Clear copper glass with definite red tints. Respectable cover of off white tiny bubbles that slowly collars and disappears leaving a few wisps of lace.

Flavor: Smoky! Smoked flavor overshadows most other tastes. Some malt comes through, and the malt seems balanced. The smoke has to be the roasted peppers, but no real pepper flavors noted either. As my mouth gets used to the smoke, I start to get a bit of citric hop.

Mouthfeel: Velvety smooth, full carbonation, medium body, slow fading mouth coat. The slightest tingle of pepper heat felt.

Overall Impression: A good smoked beer. Not really a pepper beer in my mind, just a sweet smoky great beer. I get tingles of heat in my lips and in my chest, the heat is at a great level where it’s felt, but doesn’t hurt.

Purchased 7/9/05 at Made in Oregon shop in Portland International Airport. I was expecting something like Cave Creek a pilsner lager with a chili taste. First pour reveals something much darker burnt orange in color. Little or no head retention. Smell is of caramel malts and a slightly smokey aroma. First sip reveals more a rauchbier flavor. Slight bitterness. A slight hint of heat on the tongue but very slight. More bitterness than a rauchbier. Like a rauchbier on hops. Not as exotic I would have thought based on the ingredients.

Pours a clear medium amber with a 1 finger head and good lacing. I don't get too much nose on this one but I do get some smoke and malt aromas. Taste is similar in start to their smoked ale but you don't get the "ham" flavor instead it is of very mild pepper, not spicy at all. Very nicely balanced between malt, hops and smokiness. A very nice example of the style. The complete opposite of cave creek. (ick,yuk)

typical Rogue bomber, pours rich orangy amber, fairly cloudy, slight tan head, leaves moderate lacing, Nose is fairly mild, I get hints of smoke, red peppers and malty sweetness. Medium bodied, lots of smoke, red pepper and a mild jalapeno note. Not overpowering, but the pepper/chili thing is present. Nicely balanced by malt sweetness. Not for everybody, but Pepper heads will love it, great selection for tex-mex type food.

Appearance: Poured from the bottle with a reddish brown color and a thin white head. The head has some nie stickiness and leaves a good amount of lacing on the sides of my sniffer glass.

Smell: Wow, this smells like a smoked beer (Rauchbier). It smells roasty and like roasted vegetables.

Taste: Very smokey, malty, and roasty. It has a veggie character to it and some sweetness. There is a sweet flavor of roasted pepper skin as well as black peppercorns and a fresh cut grass. This a very tasty beer.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and smooth. Coats the mouth well and allows me to enjoy the flavor with all of my taste buds.

Drinkability: Very good, very tasty and original. It'[s smooth and well done. I really like the roasted pepper taste in here.

A- This beer pours a golden red color with a good carbonation and a thick creamy light tan head.

S- This beer has the smell of green hops with a faint chipotle heat in the finish. Some notes of toasted grain are also present.

T-This beer has a big pine hops taste with a nice base of toasted grain. The finish is a nice smoky red pepper flavor that is very well balanced. The slight warmth of chilies clings faintly to the throat at the finish.

M- This beer has a nice medium full mouthfeel with a hint of creaminess. No alcohol heat but a hint of chile heat.

D- This is a very pleasant chile beer. I'm quite surprised who good it is. I thought all chile beers had to involve pain but this one is all pleasure.

As a fan of spicey food, I was really looking forward to this, my first chipotle beer. Pours a nice dark amber with a thin white head that fades away pretty fast. Nose is pretty much like a normal ale---caramel malts, floral hoppiness, and just a hint of smokiness. First taste is full of smokey chipotle flavor, very tasty, not at all burning, and integrating well with the malty backbone of the beer. After a few sips a spicey heat can be felt on the tongue between sips, and this spiciness builds throughout. Mouthfeel is a little on the thin side. I had this beer with some nachos, cheese, and salsa, and it really provided an excellent match to the food. However, due to the one-dimensional spiciness of this beer, I'm not sure I'd ever drink this by itself. I had doubts about how good this style of beer could be, but as usual Rogue puts out an exemplary product.

Whew! This is the first beer I've ever sent back! And the first Rogue that I have not only not enjoyed but rather detested!

Had this on tap at the brewery. Looked very nice, deep molases-amber. Not a lot of aroma to speak of. Too bad, as it may have portended some of the terrible fury that lay within.

As the beer hit my tounge, I was reminded of a Scottish that I had brewed that had become infected. Nothing but band-aid lickin' all the way (oh, an a smoked band-aid, if that helps).

I told the 'tender about the problem and that they might want to check this out. He poured a sample and told me that, no, this is just what it is supposed to taste like. Hmmm....

At least he let me get something else.

My first chili ale, I assumed this would be an interesting concoction. The color is a hazy copper with good carbonation and creamy head. The aroma consists of a mild malty sweetness joined by a stronger element of the spicy and somewhat smokey chipotle. The taste is very interesting and complex. A sip starts with a standard mild malt flavor, but is soon joined by spiciness and mild smokiness. Moderately citrusy hops provide a nice bite. You can definently tastes the peppers, but the flavor isn't overwelmingly spicy. The highlight of this brew is the interplay between the malts and the chipotle towards the middle of a sip. A crisp mouthfeel is also welcomed. Despite enjoying the interesting flavor of this beer, I did get a little tired of the chili flavor by the end of my 22 oz. bottle. Only one of these every now and then would suit me fine.

First I should admit that I love chipotles, with that whole chili- peppers-charred-with-cigar flavoring that I adore in select foods.
Secondly, I know what kind of nadir pepper beers can produce, after my bile ducts still start churning after the mention of the conjunction of any two or more of following words: cave, creek, crazy, Ed's, Chili, Beer.

This pours a burnt golden orange topped with a scattered, pocky bubbled crown.
The nose has vague caramel grain notes coupled with burnt rubber and Chipotle gradations.
The malt base is wide and weak, featuring notions of caramel and dark breads. The middle is filled with chipotle smoke, robust, and meaty, with the beading sweaty flesh of the pepper still issuing commands, tastewise. There is an underlying heat, but not of Hot Sauce, rather of a peppery, jerk seasoning. The hops conclude with glimpses of florals. Chipotle reigns, but the balance is suitable. The subtle building heat is actually a bit intoxicating in more ways than one.
The body is frail and pale, and the carbonation is juvenile, as in underdelevopeled and flat.
It seems like it probably loses something due to simplicity, and on it's own it's a bit eh, but it would certainly hold it's own as a tex-mex wash.
