I had the opportunity this past week to visit the Issaquah Brewery (situated roughly 15 miles east of downtown Seattle), which is now owned and operated by Rogue Ales of Newport, Oregon. In addition to partaking in a meal and some good barstool discussions with fellow Rogue members, I tackled a handful of their brews including the exceptional Imperial Stout. Sadly, this location only offers the Imperial from the bottle and not on draught. Nevertheless, after everything I had read online and heard from those sitting around the bar, I knew it was time that I take a closer look at this highly regarded beer. The result -- everything I had ever been told about this brew was right. Excellent!
It pours an exceptionally dark black, moderately syrupy consistency that delivers an immediate charge of coffee, chocolate, toasted oats, extensive hop factor and even a touch of butterscotch essence in the bouquet. The thick foamy head is of an incredibly dark brown color and it sticks around for long period of time, never really disapating much less than a 1/4" in height.
Taste wise, the Imperial Stout lives up to its billing as the Emperor Of Ales with it's complex flavorings and strong body. In addition to the unique malts blends consisting of six different malts including Munich and Chocolate, it has a very bitter sidekick that features three different hops including the ever-popular Cascade and Chinook hops, plus "two secret ingredients."
I've never been a Stout beer drinker; however, after ushering in plenty of extremely hoppy ales and plenty of barley wines in recent weeks, I'm finding it just the right time to dive into some of the better rated Stouts. The results have been extremely favorable to this point, and I'd have to say that Rogue's Imperial Stout, part of their expanded Rogue XS line of beers packed exclusively in 12oz bottles (an upgrade from the pevious 8oz bottles of past years), is an incredible Stout worthy of all the praise that has been lavished on it to this point. If you find this one in your local beer store, grab it -- then sit back and enjoy it. Highly recommended!!
