7oz bottle served in a snifter
Vintage 2009
A - Pours a "dark brown edged" black color with a swift fading mocha head.
S - Old licorice/chocolate, rum, dates, chocolate cake batter, sweet bread.
T - Cocoa cake batter, sweet cream, heavily roasted malts, astringent bitterness, cherries, espresso, bitter chocolates, moderate leafy hop oils, chlorophyll, tobacco, goes right back to dry roasted chocolate malts, finishes with with moderate roasted bitterness, coating the tongue with hop oils.
M - Silky feel, medium and heavy at different stages, still a good amount of creamy carbonation, dry and bitter finish.
Wow! I haven't had this fresh but this is still pretty harsh. Nice aroma but the roasted coffee/malts, mixed with the resinous hop oils make for a stout and astringent drink. I'm very surprised the hop oils are still very bitter. 4 years has not mellowed this out. This could go for at least 2 to 3 more years. Wish I had another one of this vintage.
