I really dig Rogue Brewery and the beers they make. I have had some of the other XS series and enjoyed them. I hadn't ever seen the Russian Imperial stout before so I had to pick one up. Plus I like unfiltered beers.
After popping open this lil baby bottle open I poured the out into my New Sam Adams beer glass I have wanted to try since seeing the commercials. After a careful pour to not rouse the yeast just a thin layer of a head formed that died away quickly. The smell of this beer is not too strong. What I can smell is dark and ominous. You can definitely smell hops mixed in with strong malty smell. Lets see what it tastes like shall we. Much of the same here. The hops go to work instantly and really hang on all the way through leaving you with a lingering bitterness. The beer has a dry finish. I really don't pick up any other flavors other than the hops. You could almost call this a dark IPA. The mouth feel is nice. The low carbonation with the dry finish is goes well with the hoppy flavor.
Overall I enjoyed this beer. From inspecting the label it states that this is best enjoyed after aging it for a year. Since in was bottled in 2009 and its now 2011 I hope it was cared for properly. No matter how it was taken care of it was a good beer and I would recommend picking one up if you like dark IPA's.
