XS series 2008 ceramic bottle into guinness pint glass. figure I'd have a RIS before i watch hunting red october.
A - I guess I got impatient and poured a bit too hard. the beer reluctantly forms head untill you really just start pouring it directly into the center. the beer pours thick, but nothing like oil. body is black with a brown head, chunky, light and bubbly. head retains very well and has lots of lacing. let me reiterate how black and thick this beer is: there is not even a trace of light being dispersed at the bottom of the glass!
S - piney hops are in the front, while sweet chocolate malts and molasses make up the strong middle section. alcohol and coffee make the subtle bottom layer. the smell could be a lot stronger.
T - initial taste is bitter from hops but also has a decent choco and alcohol backing, hints of coffee bitterness. the finish is just hop bitters followed by some dark chocolate. i dont know, it dosnt taste as good as it used to, in my memory at least. the aftertaste is a pine like bitterness and grassy florals; some chocolate bitterness coming way in the after-aftertaste. some sweet fruits as well. I just dont have a lot to say about this beer, its good but I just can find a whole lot to say about it. the only thing that lets it keep a 4.5 rating is how solid and consistent the taste is, this beer doesnt back down from being a hard ass. plus, you dont taste the booze sneaking up on you!
MF&D - this beer almost gets the perfect feel right on the nose. super thick, but a bit too velvety and creamy. the beer is very slick and feels almost like an oily slippery in the mouth. nevertheless, the brew drinks great and is a great warmer-upper for the cold months. the only thing that really keeps this down is the super slick feeling to the body, it brings it down quite a bit as i find it a bit nauseating when i concentrate on it.
