Vintage 2003 12oz bottle. aged almost 6 years.
A- black, but not impenetrable. amber around the edges. hardly any head, but that is most likely the result of the loss of carbonation over the years. the thin layer of foam that would be "head" is dark brown and leaves minimal lacing.
S- the smell is fantastic. coffee and dark fruits. cherry and plum especially. sweet with easily perceptable alcohol.
T- taste is sweet fruit and malts up front with a dry roasted coffee bitterness at the end. the lingering flavor is dominated by bitter chocolate. Alcohol is present everywhere. obviously 6 years has this beer tasting immensely different than it does fresh. it is full of flavor with barely any carbonation.
M- it is still full-bodied, but seems to have thinned out a little. it is very interesting and not so smooth on the palate.
D- Drinkability is fine. ill only have one in a night because i only have a couple more, but i could easily put down another. the only question is, would i want to? i dont think so, and not because it is bad, the beer is actually very good, but, because of the six years, im having trouble figuring it out.
overall, this is very good beer. after 6 years it is beginning to decline, but it still holds up. i would say that 2-4 years would find this beer in its prime.
