Old school 12oz. XS series bottle, bottled in 2002 it says. Thanks for the date, because otherwise I would not have been sure of the age of this one.
Black with a small light brown head. Smell is intensely dark - dates, chocolate, and tobacco. Flavor is very rounded, perhaps due to its age. Sweet and fudgy at first, with a dark chocolate focus. Alcohol is barely perceptable. Strong hops fight a long battle with this malty monster, and eventually win out. Herbaceous and bitter, dirty and earthy. Tobacco really seems present here. A bit oily. Thick, smooth, and coating, this feels like a serious brew.
I have had this fresh as well as this aged version, and I have to say that it is better fresh. The hops are brighter and the flavor seems more multi-dimensional. That being said, aged it is still very enjoyable and has some very cool qualities to it.
