Reddish copper in color. The nose is hoppy but not at the intensity I expected for such a highly regarded DIPA. The flavor profile is a nice balanced blend of malt and hops. This offering is also nicely resinous.

A: crystal clear; bronze colored; 1 finger off white head that receded to a thin collar; very nice lacing;

S: tropical fruit, floral, earthy; hard to identify any malt character;

T: earthy and floral up front; floral from mid-palate through the finish; moderate, long lasting bitterness at the end;

M: medium bodied; moderate, slightly creamy carbonation; dry finish;

O: a little too floral for my taste, but very good none the less;

Excellent beer.

***This review will not follow the uber-technical, over-complicated review format that you are used to seeing.

Tastes incredible. If you like IPAs you will love this beer. No bite at all. Very smooth. That is out of the ordinary for a stronger IPA. If I had to compare it to something, I could not do so. I cannot think of another IPA, Imperial or otherwise, that is this smooth.

It hides the higher ABV well. Does not come across as having 9.5% ABV at all. I will certainly be looking for this beer again.

It is priced a little steep, but it is a "more for more" transaction - meaning it is worth the extra money.

I wish this beer wasn't so expensive (perhaps cheaper bottling process would reduce the price) because I would drink it more often. Order it if you ever find it on draft.

Slightly hazy amber color with a one finger bordering thick head with low to medium retention. No floating particles.
Nice, but light aroma of toasted and caramel malts, pine, tangerine and grapefruit. Not extraordinary, but not sure how old it is once it was bought in the US.
Nevertheless, its flavor is boldly hoppy with notes of grapefruit, pine, spices, tea leaves, dank herbal, floral and earthy hops, Rogue yeast, nectarines, wood and slightly toasted malts. Lots of bittering hops should have contributed to its 95 IBUs. Quite dry aftertaste with a long lasting, but not harsh bitterness.
Medium bordering full body with low carbonation. Alcohol of 9.5% abv is incredibly well hidden.
Nice DIPA, which is not overly sweet, boldly hoppy (95 IBUs) but still not aggressive. Flavor is quite pleasant with a good hop complexity (but without much depth) and nice balance. I easily drank the 750ml bottle, but carbonation could have been a tad stronger.
I would like to try it very fresh.

Got a growler on the way out of Portland, bring it on the plane !

Light orange, clear IPA. Nice 1/2 inch white foamy head poured into my 10 barrel medium side snifter.

Mild bite from the IPA, nice mild grapefruit, hoppy flavor, very pleasant to drunk, even though it is over 9 %.

Mouthfeel seems 'bout right, a little malty goodness when you 'foam' it up in your mouth.

I would drink this every time at the airport, a nice find there , will probably add it in the cart now, from time to time. Drink it !

A: Opaque copper color with off-white head and excellent lacing.
S: Bread floral, citrus and pine aromas.
T: Balances nicely between biscuity malt flavors and piney hop notes.
M: Clean and refreshing big brew with dry finish.
O: Big flavorful Imperial IPA that is well-balanced.

Pours the color of a torched penny. The white head leaves quickly. A fair amount of lacing. It smells of malt, bread and caramel. Those all carry over to the taste, but are overwhelmed by tree sap. The hops add a lot of lingering bitterness. Medium, oily mouth. This is a pretty complex beer and I can see why many like it, but the malts are too predominant for me.

750 ml ceramic bottle poured into a Rogue tumbler

A- Dark orange-brown, with haziness. Creamy off white head has good retention. Some lacing.

S- Biscuit and caramel background. Earthy and citrusy hop notes.

T- Grapefruit rind. Biscuit and caramel hold up from the nose.

M- Medium body. Pretty easy to drink for such a big beer. Bitter finish, of course.

O- This is good, but a lot of dull bitter hop character. I'm more of a juicy, citrusy kinda guy.

A Valentines present in a re-sealable mini-growler. High alcohol content at 9.5% and that's a bit too strong for me, but it's tasty and I'd rate it as a solid IPA. I'd certainly get one on tap if I saw it again, but I'd probably not buy a case. Very enjoyable though. JH

750ml bottle into tulip.

A - Hazy orange brown with a large frothy white head.

S - Tropical fruit, earthy, pine needle, caramel malt.

T - Citrus, spicy hops up front. There is a strong sweet caramel malt backbone. Finishes somewhat bitter with grapefruit, bready malt and grain. Slight alcohol bite.

M - Medium-full body, smooth, a bit sticky. High carbonation, warming alcohol.

O - A fine double IPA. Great balance, flavor, and drinkability. One of the best beers from Rogue.

Poured from hinge-top 750 mL bottle a pint glass

A: Bronze to copper in color, a half-finger of white head. Medium visible carbonation.

S: Caramel Malt, Hops, Pine, Honey, and light citrus, peach, apricot.

T: Caramel, Fruit including apricot, up front, building earthy and piney hop flavors in the middle. Well balanced for a Imperial IPA.

M: Medium body, balanced carbonation. The ABU is noticeable but overwhelming.

O: Good beer

Amber color with decent clarity. Hardly any head on the beer. Looks a little thick. I got a full 16oz pour. Last time I had this, it was a 9oz bottle.

Orange and grapefruit hops with nectary thickness. Not too sweet in the nose, even though there's a strong caramel malt presence. As is there a booziness. Almost muffin-y in the malts. Pretty big.

Candied orange, apricot, grapefruit, peach, pine, caramel malt syrup. Good hoppiness, not too sweet, either. Carries through with a happy vibe. Drinks decently for a big ass beer, too. Medium body and light carbonation with some spiciness. Must be the booze, incarnate.

On tap poured into snifter.

A: 4.0 pours bright gold with 1 finger of white foamy head.
S: 3.75 for a IIPA I expect more hop aroma. There is a good balance of hop and malt, but doesn't fit into what I've come to expect for the style.
T: 3.75 similar to smell, there is a great hop and malt balance. Lingering bitter taste as expected which is very fitting to the style.
M: 4.0 this is thick, silky smooth. Carbed perfectly for the style.
O: 3.75 as I put a higher value on taste and smell, this one falls just short of the 4 rating. I thoroughly enjoy this beer, and would have again. For the style, it doesn't call into my top 5 however. To improve, I would have to get more hop aroma and lingering taste of hops.

look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

Appearance:
The foam is a clean white that stays for a bit. The beer itself is a slightly opaque brownish gold.

Smell:
A strong piney smell with caramel malty smell.

Taste:
The beer has a strong piney hop taste that is later balanced by the almost equally as strong caramel malts taste.

Mouthfeel:
Biting carbonation and thick bodied and leaves the mouth somewhat dry.

Overall:
A pretty good DIPA and worth getting again. Although, I wouldn't trust the closing mechanism to keep the beer carbonated.

On tap at Beer Revolution.

Appearance- Pours a clear copper with a finger width of creamy head.

Smell- Pleasant piney hops, caramalts, and tropical fruits.

Taste- Hit right away with the piney hops and then goes to the caramalts and tropical fruits.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes with a moderate bitterness.

Overall- A well crafted Imperial IPA by Rogue. I enjoyed the bitterness and pine resin from the hops. This one would agree with all the hop heads out there.

Purchased a 10oz from Tacoma Boys.
Appearance: Chill hazed bronze. Little white head but think it may just be because of the temp.
Smell: Beautiful. Sweet and floral. More malty aroma than hoppy.
Taste: Heavy and thick. Balanced. Bittersweet. Could have more hop influence but so good I'm not complaining.
Mouthfeel: Great body. Pronounced carbonation. Creamy and velvety.
Overall: Very good. Wish I had a bigger bottle.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from fancy looking hinged-top 750 mL bottle into a Cigar City pint glass.

A: Hazy copper to bronze color, a half-finger of white head. Medium visible carbonation mixes with a smattering of hop floaters.

S: Bready malts with some caramel character in front of grassy and pine hops - but the hop character is lower than expected.

T: Sweet malts, again with a bit of caramel, and citrus rind and pine resin hops. There is a marked bitterness and dryness at the end.

M: Medium body, good carbonation sensation. The alcohol is noticeable but doesn't get to the point of feeling boozy during the drink.

O: I think this could have used more dry-hopping and less bittering hops. It's not my favorite, but acceptable.

Bomber poured into a pint glass.

A-Hazy golden with finger of white head, visible lacing.

S-Strong hops, malt, piney resin, citrus zest.

T-Light floral notes, grapefruit sour, sweet resin and bitter hops.

M-Light mouthfeel with a good amount of carbonation

O-Very good double imperial IPA. It has a really great balance, but it is really overpriced. Not something I would drink often, unless I had a taste for it.

2010 vintage. 7 oz bottle into a tulip glass.

A - Pours a hazy burnt orange color with some solid chunks and floaties. Two fingers of off white foam which settles into a thin cap. Decent amount of lacing.

S - Very similar to an aged 120 minute, rich caramel malt, faded piney hops, honey, and light citrus. Very sweet and rich. I am a huge fan of this aroma profile.

T - And....faded. Surprisingly dull and boring. Faint caramel and pine washed away with a watery like effect. Its not bad or offensive, just very tame. The alcohol is present, but luckily its not super high. Mouth feel is rich and creamy.

O - I was pretty excited by the aroma, but the flavor was a bit of a let down. Dull, boring, tame, lacking....choose your own adjective but this was just a huge letdown in the taste department. All in all, I'm glad I finally tried this when it was marked down, but I can't imagine paying full price for this little bottle of boredom.

A: Great golden. Just hazy enough to present character. Deep golden/orange colors.

S: Deep piney smells persist between citrus hints

T: The hops flavor rushes in to start but is quickly offset by a malty finish that keeps this DIPA well-balanced. Hoppy notes are not sacrificed but are complimented by malt charactersitics

M: Silky, pleasing fell.

O: Well balanced ale. Drinkable yet holds up to a critical palate,

Appearance- copper color, nice size head, nice lacing

Smell- very nice hop aroma

Taste- very hoppy, but also well balanced for a DIPA, slightly bitter

Mouthfeel- medium bodied

Drinkability- I thought it was very good! Definitely one to drink again!
