Had on tap at The Black Sparrow 10-09-2011.
Generally I evaluate either appearance or scent first, I sniffed this and I was a bit taken aback: Mineralized water scent with some very slight caramel in the background. I cleared my nose as much as possible and tried again. That's really all I got, minerals with mild caramel.
The color is lovely but I.. I wanted to see something different in the color I guess: Translucent red/clear with a white/tan head. I think I'm getting too used to beers that aren't very clarified, I would have liked to see this cloudier as far as my personal preference goes.
The taste didn't disappoint - a nice bitter caramel/hop flavor that gets sweeter on the palate after drinking. Body was medium, actually a very nice body for this style!
I was engrossed in a conversation about real and local food while drinking this - which only served to further my appreciation of this strong ale. =)
Serving type: on-tap
