pours cloudy copper dark amber with a 1 finger head that left no lacing

smells like a rogue with carmel malt and a little hops

taste is very sugary - carmel candy apple malts and not much else to it

mouthfeel is full bodied with a decent amount of carbonation

drinkability is so so - everything about this beer was just blah

Reviewed from notes

Brown pour with a large two fingers of head that camps out and leaves some nice lacing. Smell is mainly an empty hop bitterness, with some biscuit malt notes creeping in behind. Taste is once again fairly empty. Some bread crust and floral hops. Nice heavy body, but overall a very unmemorable beer.

Notes from 3/15/10

Pours a caramel-amber color which is fairly unique. The head appears across the surface area of the glass, then quickly dissipates.

Not much happening with the smell. Mostly just a lot of caramel malt.

The super malt taste of this reminds me of wort water with some carbonation. It isn't bad, but not extremely exciting. There is an ever so slight hop flavor but it is just enough to take the edge off of the malt hit.

This is an average feeling beer, pretty plain in the mouthfeel.

This is an easy drinker but too malty for session consumption.

Saw this at the store the other day, and it called to me. I'm not sure what to expect as the label is in Japanese.

Pours a slightly cloudy orange/amber with a big fluffy white head. Smells of citrus and floral hops, a bit of a mineral smell as well. Not much going on really in the nose. Taste is a little better with some sweet malts caramel and bread mixed up with some floral hops and that mineral tartness. Sparkling carbonation, sticky mineral-y mouthfeel, medium body. I'm not sure how old this bottle is or how it came to be available for sale in NH, but I bet its not as fresh as it should be. Nothing objectionable here, but really not up to what I consider the norm for Rogue.

A: Copper-bronze with an almost pinkish hue, thin ring of retention, only a few spots of lace.

S: Interesting aroma of lychee fruit, marmalade, lemon grass, raspberry buds, caramel and biscuit.

T: Lychee fruit, earthy orange rind, caramel, biscuit, modest bitterness lets the residual sweetness really come through. There's some hops here, but it's still balanced to the sweet side. Seems to be a little oxidized, though I purchased this from the fridge in their brewery store?

M: Moderate body has a modest carbonation and some residual sweetness.

D/O: It's fairly well-hopped, but it doesn't seem like a ROGUE.

Nice silkscreened bottle, $2.29 from Artale in Rockford.

Poured into a tulip glass, there's a brief layer of foam that fades quickly to an extremely thin veil across the surface. Bright reddish orange, pristine clarity, thin ring of white around the edges.

Bready and floral nose, slightly sweet. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Medium bodied, some light shortbread flavors. Very mild residual bitterness, honey malt and a slightly medicinal apple flavor. Finishes dry and bitter with a bigger sip. Overall ok, pretty average though.

Pours clear golden with a decent white fluffy head. The aroma is slightly grainy, like a pilsener malt, with a light hop character, a bit like a noble hop. The flavor is slight, with a light malt character with a faint bready edge. It reminds me of a good rice wine. There is gentle bitterness that develops slowly after you swallow. Mouthfeel is thin and refreshing. It's a good beer for a hot, humid day. It is not deep, but it is tasty for a session beer.

~ Purchased this 12 oz bottle from Big Z Beverage in Huntington, NY. This is a nifty looking bottle with Japanese writing all over and the Rogue name centered below. Appearance is light brown with a moderately good head. It has a light hoppy aroma and a sweet pleasing taste. This beer is all right I guess - it's just nothing that spectacular. ~

Picked this up at Stateline in MD for about $2.99. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into my Hop Leaf tulip.

a - Pours a murky deep orange color with two fingers of off white fluffy head and moderate carbonation evident. Head lasts for several minutes and leaves a ton of lacing on the glass.

s - Smells of citrus hops, earthy notes, grassy, toasted malts, and light fruit. A little bland, but not as bland as the taste is. The citrus hops are nice, though faint.

t - Tastes of toasted malts, light fruit, light caramel malts, grain, bread, and earthy notes. Very malty and a bit bland. Also a little bit of tea to it, some definite herbal notes.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty smooth.

o - Overall reminded me a little bit of their Green Tea IPA, but a bit blander. Light citrus in the nose and a ton of malts in the taste. Not bad but not one I'd seek out again.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle with no lot code or bottling date. The pour is an amber color with a fairly thin head. The aroma tends to emphasize the hops rather than the malts although the malts are there. The taste has a maltiness to it but it is also a tad flat. There is also a bit of ripe pears in the mix. It is not one of Rogue's better efforts b ut it is fairly drinkable.

Grabbed this at Harvest Fine Wine in West Hartford CT for $1.79. Served cold in a chilled pint glass.

A moderate pour gives a huge whirlwind of carbonation rising upward to form a nice fluffy tan head. As it settles a ton of fluffy webby lacing sticks to the glass. Smell has a good malty sweetness with some sour cherries and a little indistinguishable hop. Taste comes straight from the nose... sour cherry + hop gives a nice bitter bite balanced well by the sweet malt body. Feel is a maybe little heavy and viscous for the style, it's pretty filling.

A - Poured with a clear, copper tinted body...the head stood one finger tall and was off white in color...it stayed as a full cap and left some decent lacing

S - The nose was rather sweet with lots of caramel and an underlying fruitiness...bready malts...faint hops

T - This bitter was rather malty from start to finish...sweet caramel catches your tastes buds right away...the middle brings a toasted malt and breadiness flavor...apples and some other fruity flavors come in...the finish brings out dark toffee notes with an underlying, yet faint, hop presence

M - Medium bodied...metallic twang, sweet finish

O - This one needed just a few more hop notes...it was a rather sweet ESB...my bottle may have been old, but the two Japanese-looking Rogue bottles I've had have not impressed me

A 12 ounce bottle poured into a nonic Imperial pint glass. This bitter appears a clear straw color with about an inch of pillowy bone white foam. Nose and flavors of lightly toasted grains/barley, grassy, earthy hops, biscuits and a hint of caramel at the end. A tad thin in body, but with ample carbonation. Worth a try if you see it.

pours an orangey amber with a nice solid head and good lacing. the bottle is awesome with the japanese writing and the little map on the back. rogue markets well. there is only the slightest of hop aromas. the taste is alright, some dried dark fruit notes, a little lingering on the palate but pleasant. not really what i expected. it's kind of a different flavor profile than i expected, more of a rice wine or barleywine. drinkable none the less, i find myself wishing i had one or two more kicking around.

I guess this bottle is a little old? considering it's really not that bad for the age. Bright orange color, white head, malty slightly fruity and vinous aroma. Creamy medium body, lots of wine like notes, grapey, a little medicinal and grassy . Has a very unique peachy flavor to it overall, but pretty good.

Poured a slightly hazy deep amber/light copper (SRM14) with a thin, tannish head buoyed by moderate carbonation. Aroma is malty sweet with brown sugar notes. Hoderate hoppiness in the aroma. Taste is all malt up front with sweetness like brown sugar and a defiante bitter bite. Hoppiness lingering is refreshing.

A: The beer is very hazy copper in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high beige head that consistently covered the surface and left a coating of bubbles down the sides of the glass.
S: There are moderate aromas of caramel malts in the nose along with some hints of fruity yeast.
T: The taste is very similar to the smell and has a very slight amount of bitterness and some hints of malty sweetness and toffee.
M: It feels medium-bodied and slightly chewy on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: Although this beer seems quite malty and flavorful for an ESB, it is rather drinkable.

Served in a pint glass; copper-amber color with a head that disappeared pretty quickly. Not much aroma, just some malt. Taste is pretty low-key. Fairly biscuity malt, with a touch of bitter hops towards the end. Not much carbonation. Relatively easy drinking beer; nothing overwhelming, but something I'd enjoy again.
