I was surprised to see this at Rob's World of Beers in Wichita and I've always been a fan of Deadliest Catch so it was impossible to resist.

Nice looking beer. Very burnt amber (not quite red) color with towering sticky khaki head which maintains its froth to the end of the glass making its mark at each sip.

The heavy buttery bisquit, toffee, and somewhat floral/grassy hop nose grabs your attention making it clear that this beer may extend beyond expectations.

The flavor reflects the aroma with heavy hitting bread dough, sweet butter laden toffee/caramel, and a mild herbal hop spike at the end. The sweetness of this beer goes a little too far for me by the time the (unshared) bottle is empty.

Nice velvety slick feel for the style accomplished with its carbonation.

Overall, I'm very glad I picked this up. Very good beer for the price and a portion of the proceeds go to the Fisherman's Fund which helps cover medical expenses of Alaskan fisherman not covered by insurance when injured on one of the most dangerous jobs around.

A: Cloudy orange brown with 2 fingers of cappucinno beige head, sea foam like lacing. Lots of small floating particles within, no visible carbonation.

S: Caramel malts, like the kind of caramel you get on a sundae, malt bread, deep rich malts like a milkshake. A touch of molasses. I actually think a smell the ocean. Also some light fruitiness like banana.

T: Rich sweet and malty with a little dull bitter hop quality on the end. Caramel, a touch of molasses and a touch of banana in there.

M: Thick substantially pulpy body, with medium low carbonation.

O: Depth of texture and flavours all highlighting the malts. Almost borderline double bock, though not as heavy or sweet its getting there. Really well done. Wasn’t expecting such a unique quality in this beer.

From the 650 ml. bottle. Sampled on June 26, 2014.

Medium to darker amber colored pour with a fluffy off-white head that stays on top for the entire session. Moderate clarity.

The aroma has a solid sweet and roasted malt backbone with some earth, soil, and pine expressing themselves as well. One thing about the malts is that I can almost p[ick up the fresh malt wort.

Medium to bolder body but also quite smooth.

Roasted caramel malts are up front on this one as the hop bitterness trickles in more and more with each sip eventually lingering at the finish. Solid.

Poured into a shaker pint glass.

Look: A rusty amber body holds up a thick and creamy tan head. The head doesn't recede much as foamy bands of lacing stay on the glass.

Aroma: A spicy, woody note dominates.

Taste: Very spicy and woody, with cedar coming to mind. Heavy on the malts, but there is a slightly hoppy finish. The longer I drink this the more I can taste the chocolate malts.

Mouthfeel: Heavy, creamy.

Overall: This beer is pretty thick, malty, and spicy. Good flavor but a bit too heavy for 6.2% ABV.

22 oz bottler served in a Belgian snifter.
Pours deep red-brown in color with a decent beige head. Spotty lacing.

Rich aromas with roasted grains and hops in about equal measure. Floral, fruity and toffee notes.

Flavor: has that characteristic Rogue hop flavor along with a rich dark malt mix. Mildly bitter.

Feel: medium body; lively carbonation.

O: excellent

It is always interesting to review a beer that most people have only just barely bothered ranking. Then you read the reviews and actually find that if you pay enough attention, that beer might be better than you've expected. Well, this is definitely one of those. Not sure what the average Rogue drinkers like as they have quite a few brews that I personally would never dare call beers but this Captain Sig's is most certainly one. A really good beer actually. It might be more appealing to the IPA crowd (like me, I'm a total hop head…) at 80 IBU's but its got some interesting caramel malt flavours too. It's cloudy, dark amber, almost born in colour with a good head that vanishes somewhat fast. The smell and taste are both slightly boozy but not harsh or anything, just enough to let you know that you are not dealing with a typical mass production brew. It has a medium body with good carbonation. This beer is good! Nowhere near my all-time favourite but one I would definitely recommend and buy again.
