Draft pour into a shaker pint at Beachwood BBQ.
A: Clear, dark maple with less than one finger of diminishing off-white foam head. No lacing remains on the glass.
S: Very nutty with some toast and complex spiciness.
T: Begins with caramel and some toffee, followed by a burst of acidity and a hint of solvent complexity. Finishes slightly nutty with no detectable bitterness.
M: Light-medium viscosity, pleasantly creamy on the palate, with light carbonation.
D: This beer represents a welcome experiment with one of Rogue's most signature flavors. That said, it does not enhance the flavor of their hazelnut brown so much as simply alter it. Followers of the original should seek this out for the sake of comparison, while wood enthusiasts may find themselves let down. This beer is interesting compared to other American browns, and it doesn't sacrifice drinkability, but just be warned that it is not extreme, so much as slightly unusual.

this would have been better maybe if it was opened when it was supposed to be....It was sour (not a good sour) without any of the tastes that I was expecting... Drain Pour. I would like to have tasted this beer when it was released...I think about three years ago.

22 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. Got this bomber on sale from the local Binny's earlier. This bottle is slightly different than the one pictured, with slightly different stats listed on the side. 33 IBU listed, etc. Stoked to have landed this bottle, either way, since I enjoyed the Rogue John John Dead Guy Ale quite a lot. I've never had either the Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar or Rogue Hazelnut Spiced Rum
Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.
A - Pours just over two fingers of creamy tan head on top of a dark ruby colored body. Head settles down to a ring of foam quickly and some suds.
S - Nose is quite tame. The yeast is what jumped out at me initially. Slight hint of funk. Possibly oxidized? Lots of bready malt presence, and any actual hazelnut is hard to conjure, but it is in there. Bananas and cream. Hazelnut smells begin to become more pronounced as the beer warms.
T - Taste follows the nose, only backwards. Creamy banana, malt roast, and a disappointingly subdued hazelnut character. The effects of the rum barrel aging are pretty nonexistent.
M - Mouthfeel is ideal. Smooth, creamy, wet, nice medium body, and good carbonation. A bit of nuttiness lingering on the palate.
Overall, definitely fell short of my expectations. The effects are the barrel aging are ridiculously nonexistent, almost as if it accomplished nothing. Aside from that, the beer itself is sort of a let down with a much more maltier approach than I would have liked. Lackluster 5.00% abv is also a let down. Nice to have tried it, but not a beer I would want again.

Poured from 22 oz bottle into shaker pint glass.
A: Bottle opened with a loud "pbssst!"...hinting at things to come. Pours a murky brown with overly massive 5+ inch light tan head (over half the glass) even with a careful pour. Decent retention.
S: Sweet caramel malt, hazelnut, and a hint of spicy black pepper.
T: Opens with an almost soda-like sweetness and carbonation...a bit off-putting. Then it turns toward a more light raisiny lambic. Extremely odd.
M: Overly fizzy. Light body.
D: I don't think I've said this before, but this was one weird beer. I think the aging in the hazelnut spice rum barrels threw this one for a loop. An unfortunate disappointment from an otherwise solid brewery. DP.
