Aromas are intially citrusy with slight pine and grapefruit. Slight caramel maltiness. Pretty standard for a West Coast DIPA/American Strong Ale.
The tastes intially begin with the caramel maltiness which was suprising, but quickly shifts to the above hop characteristics.
Mouthfeel and carbonation were both adequate. Overall this was a good beer, however nothing too memorable. Recommended but don't break your back to sample.

Had on tap at Publick House in Brookline, MA.

Pours a murky copper with slight shades of red. There is a nice 1/2 finger of head that clings to the top of the beer for a while.

The nose is unexciting. There is a slight hoppiness to the aroma, but I really pick up little else. The smell isn't off-putting and is pleasant enough, there just doesn't seem to be enough of it.

The mouthfeel is surprisingly thick and viscous with a light carbonation that is not immediately perceptible. This doesn't really feel great in the mouth, and the thickness - though not syrupy or boozy - works against the character of this beer and takes away from its enjoyment.

The taste is mildly hoppy. While I don't usually associate hops with strong ales, I still expected more of a hoppy presence. There is very little character or complexity here; in addition to the mild, uninteresting hops, I also get a bit of bran flakes mixed in. There is a very nice, long dry hopped finish that does redeem the beer to some extent.

I was very disappointed in this beer: as a strong ale it's lacking character, complexity, or definition, and it doesn't have enough of a hops presence to warrant the label: "hoppy american strong ale" (Rogue's description).

Served in a room temperature pint glass at Waldo Pizza in Kansas City.

A: Nice deep amber color with inch thick off-white head and decent lacing.

S: Sweet fruity aroma. Apricots? Hint of citrus hops.

T: Nice upfront hoppy bitterness. Light malt sweetness. Hop bitterness dominates. Very dry. Hop bitterness lingers on and on and on. Surprisingly no alcohol flavor given the ABV.

M: Quite fresh in the mouth. Carbonation hits well. Very light. Pops in the mouth. Fresh.

D: Very nice. Goes down smooth. Almost too smooth. This will get you drunk quick.

Overall, a very enjoyable beer. I am usually not too big a fan of Rogue beers due to the heavy handedness in the added flavor department, but this one is very nice.

Stumbled into this one at the PDX airport pub back in August.

Served in a goblet, it's a dark see-thru caramel/amber with only a half finger's worth of off-white head, but a decent amount of drippy lacing.

An intensely malty brew- sweet, toasty and roasty. Hops are gentle in the nose, and don't make an appearance in the mouth until mid-swallow. They take their time getting going, but eventually introduce a nice pungent earthy/pine/herbal combo that turns the beer from boring to enjoyable the blink of an eye. A bit of lingering booziness in this full-bodied brew.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a rich coppery-amber color with less than an inch of slightly off-white head that dissipated quickly, leaving nice lacing.

A full malty aroma greets the nose, with a tang of hops on the finish. The flavor was very malt-forward on the front but had a strong hop bite in the middle and on the end.

The body was good, full and complete, without being heavy. Drinkability was very good for such a strong beer, having 3-4 would be OK. Overall, a should try if you see it and worth some effort to find.

On Tap at SF Rogue Tap House on 7-18-09

A - Pours a deep caramel color. Nice creamy white head with gentle lacing all the way down.

S - Sweet malt dominates the nose. A touch of crisp hops detected in the end, but smells malt driven.

T - Lots of sweet malt quickly followed by a dry hoppy bitterness. The bitterness builds leaving the mouth very dry. Aftertaste is full of piney/ grassy hops. Does not taste as malty as it smells, a delightful deception.

M - Thick and chewy. Moderate to high carbonation. Exactly what you want in a big beer.

D - Deceptively smooth. This beer drinks very easily for 10.5% abv. I would say it is smooth for a 6% abv, but 10.5% makes it even more remarkable. Tastes like an IPA that was made into a Strong Ale. I liked it.
