Bottle to goblet.
A gorgeous looking beer. I'd give it a 6 for appearance if it let me as I don't think i've. Ever seen a beer behave this way upon pouring. Almost like it is creaming bubbling up in the bottle. Dark black, big big big tan head. Mighty bubbles. Great legs. Aroma is lots of mineral and dark chocolate. Taste is the same with some toasted barley smoothing it out. Creamy feel, with some zip. A very nice beer. Very different. Very interesting. Only ""downer"" is that I think 22 oz. is really the limit on what you can stand because of how strong the mineral flavor is.

Mixture of black srm appropriate for a schwarzier and that cherry cola head you often see from imperial porters. Aroma has some of the roast but lacks the hopping, this one seems to stress the malt.
Has a dry mouthfeel compared to expectations, even though appropriate for style, the chocolate malt really made me think the opposite of dryness. This really tows the line between schwarzbier, porter and black ipa.
I enjoyed it, but it definitely was malt forward taste and mouthfeel wise. Plenty of dark chocolate and coffee comes out from the malt like almost no other in this genre. One of Rogue's better beers. Bomber format sucks though.

Sampled in August 2016 from 22oz (650ml) bottle in pint glass. No Bottled on date on the bottle.
Appearance: Pitch black, dark color, with a thin dark tan head. The head lasted a little time, and left a little lacing on the glass, but not a lot.
Smell: There are roasted malt aromas, along with some strong chocolate and a little spice and hops bitterness aromas. Interesting combination and balance between the various aromas.
Taste: Full-bodied with nice balance of malts, chocolate, coffee, and hops. There is a hint of sweetness like a dark chocolate flavor that may be due to the malts, but it is balanced with strong coffee flavor, and a little bitterness from hops. Overall it has a good taste.
Mouthfeel: Full-bodied, but very smooth. Very creamy. Moderate alcohol which matches with the 6.0% on the label.
Overall: Overall, this is a very good Schwarzbier. It has more chocolate flavors than other Schwarzbier, but not overly so. I will buy it again.

From the 650 ml. bottle. Sampled on January 18, 2016.
The pour is jet black with an attractive lingering and soft tan head.
The aroma has a kind of charred or burnt toasted malt character to it.
The body is medium and better but it also delicate in texture.
The taste was a bit of letdown after the build up. Yes, I get the same burnt toasted malt flavor but there is something kind of butter-like in the taste.

Appearance: Looks rather like a stout as it pours pitch black with a bubble show producing a frothy head; dots and dashes of lacing linger
Smell: Chocolate, roast and soy sauce tones
Taste: Roast, toasted black bread and chocolate forward, with ashy tones building; after the swallow; the soy sauce makes an entrance, and grows into the finish
Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation
Overall: A bit of a hybrid beer here with a big, American take on the Schwarzbier style; but for the soy sauce finish I would like this a lot but I still found it rather enjoyable
