Nearly black, this held on a touch of head and a few specks of lace.

I enjoyed the flavors of the smell but it was a little muted. Cocoa hides behind dark malt. The taste in the mouth has no such shortcoming, with strong and well balanced flavors. The mouthfeel is smooth and full, and I could use another.

Rudy's Liquors - Lasalle, IL

Rogue's schwarzbier pours darker than most. As a matter of fact it's bordering on black hole with no light entering much less escaping. There aren't even highlights around the glass. The milk chocolate head is instantly creamy, like the froth of espresso, and leaves puffy, patched lacing as I drink. This is one of the better looking schwarzbiers I have ever seen.

The smell of this beer treads into stout territory. Roastier than expected malt kicks things off while a solid backbone of coffee and anise compliment nicely. There's a nice soft earthen maltiness flashing through here and there that's reminiscent of leather at times. Earthy hoppiness, a little herbal, wraps up the mouthwatering nose. Very nicely done!

This is a damn good beer! The roast is smooth and inviting before segueing into coffee and cream. The black licorice is soft and adds good depth. The earthiness from both the malt and hops pick up a bit toward the finish and leave an easy bitterness. This is one of the most perfectly balanced beers I've had in a long time and while being balanced it's also very flavorful.

Decadence! The mouthfeel is pure bliss. The body weighs in at medium with a body that's so silky smooth it's ridiculous. The finish slowly dries out and leaves an easy lingering bitterness after each drink. The balance is such that this beer is extremely satisfying while being incredibly drinkable.

Now, I'll start off by saying I'm not the biggest Rogue fan around, as a matter of fact this is the first beer I've drank of theirs in a few years. With that said, Dirtoir Black Lager is one of the best schwarzbiers I have ever had. It's up there with the likes of Monschof, Black Bavarian, and Duck Rabbit. It drinks more like Duck Rabbit's than the previous two with the weight and boldness. A great beer. Toss this into six packs and I'll be a happy camper.

Great looking beer, with a very nearly black body, tinged just slightly with deep, rusty red, and a very dense, latte-colored head. Kalamata olives are the first thing I notice on the nose, all briny and savory. It could pass as an oyster stout, for sure, at least by the smell. A bit of chocolate, a little molasses, and a slightly bourbon-ish maple character all come through. Reminds me a bit of my beloved Mr Squirrel.

The flavor is a balance of savory and sweet that seems to punch slightly above its weight – like an imperial stout, but a little lighter and less boozy. Walnut liqueur, prunes, well-pulled espresso, chewy licorice – but in spite of all the rich flavors (and fairly thick mouthfeel) it's bone dry and has the most perfect carbonation, a slight fizz that dissipates into a soft froth. This is exquisite – to be fair, this is exactly what I'm in the mood for at this particular moment. It's been a long day and I wanted something with a lot of depth, but also something refreshing. That's a tall order to fill and this does so perfectly. It's a very versatile beer: great on its own, obviously, whatever the season, whatever the weather; but also a potentially excellent 'go-to' beer for food. I can see it working with anything from steak and mash to raw oysters to Thai curries.

What a beer! Well done, Rogue. You still got it.
