Aroma
Getting some lighter malty scents along with some vanilla maybe, rumlike hints there also of molasses or syrup

Mouthfeel
Fairly well carbonated with some body, but not too terribly much. Like a lighter brown ale in weight.

Appearance
Amber/brown with hints of red in a goblet. Poured to an initial white head which has dissipated quickly and looks to be leaving a slight lacing.

Taste
Hints of bourbon, with some vanilla and almond. Not too much of an aftertaste, but a slight warming afterward. Nice, more of a cool weather beer.

Drinkability
For me personally, I don't know if I'd want a huge amount as I don't like bourbon all that much and it seems like that would become bothersome after a time but it is good and fairly unique.

Overall
Unique and enjoyable although not necessarily something I'll buy very often. Like the vanilla and malty tones.

A ale or maibock?Who knows,but I have always kinda liked the Dead Guy,oak aging it left me skeptical but I liked it.Poured into a .5 liter stein a hazed burnt orange with a craterous one finger head atop.Toasty caramel aromas with some of that vanilla tinged oak,a slight leafy hop presence shows thru as well.Flavors are toasty and warming,I picked up a hint of melon and leafy hop as well.I like the toasty warming finish,solid and not overdone.

I'm not sure how to score this one, as I don't really have another whiskey barrel aged maibock to compare it too.

Burnt orange color with a creamy, white crown.

Oaky aroma gives off toasty vanilla with caramel undertones. Definately dominated by the barrel, not necessarily the whiskey aspect.

The fruity hops and soft grains in the flavor bring out the spirit of the bock. Has a bit of browned butter from the barrel. The body is medium and the finish is long with caramel and vanilla. In the end, the dead guy in it is subdued, sadly.

This could be more epic had they aged double dead instead to bring more body and depth, along with aging potential.

A: Deep amber with a light white head

S: Caramelly malts with a bit of oak and vanilla and some bourbon

T: Sweet malts come out and the whiskey flavor is apparent. Some earthy and mildy bitter hops on the back end.

M: Medium bodied with some light bitterness. Not much alcohol heat.

D: Fairly drinkable

Overall, this was a neat experiment and an alright drinker. Nothing amazing though.

In my pilsner glass, this was a really attractive beer. Copper-colored, thick white head resembling whipped cream, some lacing. Nice caramel malt aroma, a bit of whiskey. Caramel taste, some whiskey, and late hoppiness. A good maibock. I hope Rogue does some more barrel aging.

22 ounce bottle pours a hazy amber body with a medium sized beige head. Good retention and some patchy lace sticks to the glass.

Lovely aroma has a caramel malt profile with an abundance of citrusy hops(orange and pink grapefruit). Hints of whiskey and woodsy oak add a nice touch.

Medium body and carbonation with an earthy feel from the barrel and yeast.

Taste is balanced. Plenty of caramel maltiness here, but nicely countered by dry and grassy hops that have just a hint of citrusy grapefruit. Oaky wood is prominent, but I didn't pick up any vanilla. Bourbon whiskey notes emerge as it warms.

Barrel aging is subtle and it works very well here. Just a bit edgier than the regular Dead Guy.

$10.99 for a bomber at DeCicco's in Ardsley, NY. No freshness info..pours medium brown, honey amber, puffy light tan head, retains about 3/4 inch of a head and slowly fades, leaves better then average, quality lace behind. The nose has components of sweet bready malt, light vanilla and faint wood/smoke. Tasty malted up ale, notes of rum, more vanilla, a light woodyness that delicatly interweaves itself through this beer, thoroughly enjoyable and nicely crafted. I'd buy it again.

Appearance: clear, golden brown in color, 1/3 inch head, high carbonation

Smell: big oak barrel, some caramel malt

Taste: big oak barrel, some caramel malt

Mouthfeel: semi-sweet, medium/high carbonation, medium bodied, smooth

Drinkability: A good beer only if you like the oak taste. I think this one may be overly oaked and it looses some of the flavors that make the original so tasty. I would pick this one up if I needed an oak fix, but otherwise would pass.

Pours golden orange with a white head. The aroma is fruit with some whiskey and vanilla. The flavor is whiskey and oak with some vanilla and fruit. The oaked character of the beer really comes through in the flavor. Medium, creamy mouthfeel and carbonation.

Picked this up a Gravity in Olympia

A- looks like Dead Guy... maybe a little darker. Nice copper, gold hue. Thin head that dissipates quickly.

S- Faint aromas of malt and wood.

T- For a barrel aged beer, this is really something else. Most of the BA beers I'm used to have such an up front woodiness, or booziness in some cases. The barrel is really subdued in this beer. You get some wood and whiskey right on the nose, along with the earthy hops and bready malts of the base beer. The whiskey shows up again on the tail end, with some almost berry-like flavors. The flavors are very well integrated, and unlike many BA beers, this one is ready to drink NOW. A great example of what ELSE can be done with whiskey barrels.

M- Light, moderately carbonated, sticks around on the tongue for a while.

D- Much like the regular Dead Guy, this goes down really easy with a lot of flavor. If this came in decently priced sixers, I would buy this for a session. Not my favorite style, but nonetheless, awesome.

Pours a hazy burnt orange. Helluva head on this one. An inch and a half of off white fluffiness that stays around pretty much the whole way through the beer. Nose smells of oranges, maybe a tad apple, and just slight whiskey notes. Kind of disappointed in the taste, although it is good, I wish it had more whiskey in the flavors. Oranges, malt, just a slight bit of whiskey. Whiskey gets more prevalent as I drink more. Nice full mouth feel. I did like this beer, but I thought a bit more whiskey on the pallet would've made this a fantastic beer.

John John Dead Guy opens with a strong yeasty aroma, bearing immediate and large notes of fresh-baked and floury breads. These intermingle nicely with strong fruit esters, the aromas here ranging from orange to apricot to berry. Good handfuls of vanilla, oak, maple syrup, caramel, and touches of earthy kola nut-like scents provide interesting counterpoints. The faintest touch of whiskey lingers at the edges, lending an edgy wildness. As a whole, the nose is excellent, speaking of superb craftsmanship and incredible attention to ingredients and detail. Only a slight tendency to fade after a bit keeps this from achieving top marks.

On the tongue, the beer opens with a mainly malt-based blast, with vanillas, caramels, brown sugars, maple syrups, and floury toasted wheat crusts dominating. Fruit esters mainly tend toward the darker side on the tongue, including black cherry, fig, and plum. Touches of anise and kola nut add an earthiness, as well as black pepper. The oak aging does lend touches of whiskey, charcoal, and oak, but these blend nicely with the malts' darker notes, and do not overwhelm the brew. Hops are hardly noticeable against this onslaught, but do add bitterness, as well as hints of pine resin and plant stem. Late in the mouthful, as the sugars die off, the whiskey notes rise gently, as well as does a wet wheat grain flavor. The aftertaste is a continuation of these latter flavors, lingering for a good time, and moving even more towards the whiskey flavors. Mouthfeel is medium, and carbonation is medium-high, slightly burning the soft palate.

Overall, this is great beer, and the whiskey-barrel aging has given the normally hoppy Dead Guy ale a nice earthy, oak texture. It does somewhat detract from the hop profile, however, and in my opinion the brew becomes a little to overpowering in the whiskey area as it sits on the tongue and melds into the aftertaste. I also wanted for a stronger sugar base, feeling that the malty notes could have been stronger to better combat the whiskey flavors and give the beer more punch. Still, this is a good bottle, and worth trying.

picked up a growler of this at the orchard park consumers for $17.99. poured into a bulb style glass right after i arrived home from the beer store. at fridge temp.

pours out a hazy reddish orange color with a big fluffy, soapy 3 fingers of slightly off white head that kept good retention. a nice foamy cap off the pour. lots of sticky lace.

the aroma is a bit of a letdown. lots of metallic malts off the first whiff. next to that there some fruity malts, some earthy, piney hops, some wood, and a bit of whiskey like alcohol.

the intial taste is metallic, fruity malts. almost a bit of dark fruits. lots of earthy, slightly herbal leafiness. some pine and citrus from the hops. the woody, whiskey barrel like alcohol comes in at the finish. as the beer warms, the whiskey barrel comes in a lot more and the metallic qualities seem to fade a bit both in the taste and the aroma.

medium bodied, decent feeling carbonation. just a hint of lingering hop bitterness on the palate.

an easy drinker and a growler to the head in one night shouldnt be a problem, but i expected a little more. not really worth the $17.99 growler fill. i havent had the original dead guy in quite awhile to compare, so i didnt really know what to expect.

Draft into a Samichlaus snifter.

A: Orange - red - hazey - very pretty - thin head, slight lacing.

S: Vanilla, nutty, musty.

T: Some roasted nuts, earthy malts, oak.

M: Thin, lightly carbonated.

O: I got it on draft for $3 and was not impressed. I'm a big fan of barrel aged beers, but this one didn't gain many interesting characteristics from the barrels it was stored in. Don't go out of your way for this one.

Hadn't seen this one before and thought it was neat. Loved Dead Guy and enjoyed Double Dead Guy so I figured I'd pick it up.
Poured into pilsener glass; light amber like honey in color with a fluffy long-lived white head made of very fine bubbles.
Smells of buttery crackery malt, light caramel.
Taste reminds me a lot of Double Dead Guy, without the booze heat. Crackery caramel malt, tons of Maillard reaction flavor with some light vanilla and oak in the finish.
Mouthfeel is clean and medium bodied.
Overall, not much difference from Double Dead Guy here. Maybe I should try them side-by-side but eh well. Still tasty!

Poured into a New Belgium goblet orange/amber color with a two finger white head. Minimal lacing. The nose is very strong of vanilla and whiskey. Can't really scent anything from the Helles Bock. The taste is very interesting. The regular dead guy is there, but there are strong whiskey flavor up front that mellows out to a very strong vanilla note. There is also an odd flavor, it's almost like an artificial peach flavor. The mouthfeel is rather light, no alcohol burn from the bock or from the whiskey flavor.

I've loved plenty of John Maier's offerings but this one explodes with the malts and whiskey barrel aged effects. Appears a pale copper hue with a bright off white beige head, forms thick lacing scattered on the sides of my laced ridden imperial nonic pint glass. Aroma hits with the smoked vanilla and bourbon barrel aging going on that's what comes through in the beer not the underlying dead guy ale. It opens up the nares and eyes with alcohol vapors, what a beer indeed. More malt ridden alcohol, vanilla, bourbon aged light bodied presence with a hars oak after taste is left on the palate making this one nearly impossible to finish with a smile on your face. I'm one of the biggest fans of Rogue beer but keep your whiskey seperate from your bread winning Dead Guy, these two creations have no place joining as one. It's hot with alcohol on the palate, carbonation is soft and mellow the body is medium but soaked with alcohol. Drinkability overall is pretty freakin' poor, not a beer I would ideally indulge in if I knew that it was soaked in alchoolic oak barrels of whiskey.

22 oz bottle served in a St. Bernardus snifter.

A: The beer is hazy orange-amber in color. It poured into my snifter with a sudsy head that quickly died down to a thin partial film over the surface and a thin ring around the edge of the glass.

S: Moderately strong aromas of malts, whiskey and wood in the somewhat fruity nose. Interesting and complex, although not a perfect mix in my nose.

T: The flavor is a little better than the aroma, with a solid malt/barley base, beer is quite malty and notes of wood and whiskey from the barrel aging process. Hints of yeast, spicy and herbal hops, honey and dark fruits are also present in the taste. Good sweet/sour/bitter balance, leaning slight towards the sweet/sour dimensions.

M: On the high side of medium-bodied with a very good, low-moderate amount of carbonation. Quite smooth with nearly no alcohol harshness.

O: A rich and complex ale I enjoyed quite a bit despite having no particular fondness for whiskey. The whiskey barrel aging adds a good level of wood and whiskey to the aroma and flavor, and probably contributes to the fine mouthfeel. Improved with warming.
