Simply put, Rogue creates near perfection in their beers. The Shakespeare Stout is one of their best examples (along with the chocolate stout and the mocha porter). This brew's flawlessness is incredible.
The Shakespeare pours pitch black with a dark brown/mahogany hue glinting around the edges when held up to the light. It has a thick tan head that leaves nice lace and has good retention. The nose is heavily of burnt coffee and bitter chocolate. A nice floral essence creeps up to thanks to the hops. Burnt coffee and bitter chocolate dominate the beginning of the sip. Hops join in towards the end and leave a nice bitter and dry taste. The bitter chocolate, burnt coffee, and hop flavors complement each other so well in this beer. It has a medium body.
Very, very nice beer.

Can't believe I haven't rated this. Pours nearly black under a large, lumpy tan head. The foam settles to a solid sheet in the surface; minor lacing. Smells of dark malt, subtle oats, roasted barely, and earthy hops with a slight soapy/floral note. Lots of chocolaty roast in the flavor and some citrusy hop bitterness. Creamy smooth, not quite full bodied, but appropriate for the style. I imagine I would have rated this one higher years ago, but hey, it's still a classic. Good, hoppy stout.
