Poured from a 22oz bottle into my Stone RIS glass. Poured dark brown, almost black in color. It has a half inch mocha colored head covering the top of the beer when first poured, but faded after a few minutes to a thin lacing.

The aroma has a lot of bittersweet chocolate and coffee grounds coming through. The oats also come through a bit to give it a smoothness in the nose. It has a nice roasted but smooth aroma to it overall.

The taste is similar to the nose in that the bitter sweet chocolate and the coffee really come through. The oats give it a creamy, smoothness that I really like. It finishes with a little more bitterness and some cocoa and coffee grounds.

Mouthfeel is on the heavier side with moderate to low carbonation. The oats give it a little creamy mouthfeel which I always love. Drinkability is good, it's a very good tasting and flavorful stout.

Pours dark and very little light can get through (though a wee bit does). Nose is almost a gummy cocoa. You get that roasted coffee and chocolate that you come to expect from some of the great stouts. But the flavor. Oh baby, the flavor. Rich and full with strong coffee tones and it just stays constant with a slight change throughout the life of it on your mouth. Feel is smooth and it is very drinkable. Even more so than the Imperial Stout for the obvious reasons of course.

A: Sheer black with a thick, robust beige head comprised of various sized bubbles. The head displays great retention and absolutely coats the glass in lacing.

S: Roast, coffee, chocolate.

T: The beer leads off with roast and chocolate flavors, followed by oats and coffee. The beer finishes with a hint of hop bitterness and lasting chocolate covered coffee bean flavors.

M: Medium body, with a smooth and creamy feel, yet with plenty of carbonation to give the beer some zip.

D: A solid oatmeal stout. I would certainly drink this again.

Poured pitch black with a thick, bubbly brownish head. The color was great - the head disappeared to leave just traces fairly rapidly.
The smell was of chocolaty oats with hints of fruity hops. The aroma was fairly strong - but pleasant - earthy tones.
The taste was of sweet chocolate blended with some bitter, fruity hops and a touch of yeast. As the drink progressed, more flavors became more manifest. After a few sips, I read the bottle more closely and saw that there were nine ingredients. I was not surprised, as it is a richly complex stout. The taste was very enjoyable.
It left a nice taste in the mouth - one that I would expect from a good stout. The alcohol was well-hidden. It was rich and creamy.
The impression it left me with was haven eaten a bowl of oatmeal accompanied with a rich chocolate milk.
This is a great, complex stout to have as a dessert drink.

A classic if there ever was one.
The color is an inky cloak of solemn black.
Head is a thick, crusty, toasted brown. Aroma: supreme example of roast, rich and invigorating, potent and powerful, dry and dreamy, a snootful could rise old Yorick from his grave. Further gleanings give more flavors, of anise, espresso, pepper, chocolate. I could smell this all day and think of nothing better to do!
On first taste, I am transported! Beautiful bitterness, lush malt, titanic texture! Thoroughly magical hop play on the palate, to make old Prospero proud, malt as dark and knotted as King Richard's heart. Every single time I have the pleasure to sip this fine ale, any wintry discontent is made glorious summer anon! I happily suffer a sea-change, into something rich and strange!
I feel like the world's mine oyster...mmmm. oy-sters!
From Shakespeare to Simpson, that's how even the best of beers will tranform us all!
Plainly put, the bard of beers does somehow have that bewitching power o'er me, and I am mezmerized good, as I like it. And when the hurlyburly's done, I am left clamoring for more!
I couldn't change a thing about this perfect potion. Some stouts may be more bold or brash in alcohol or flavor, but none is more perfectly integrated in all it's parts and easily drunk and thoroughly enjoyed. Truly, the stuff dreams are made of!

Review from notes taken 12/9/09

Pours black in color with a darkly tanned head. Little bit of lacing is found on the glass and head has but minor powers of retension. Nose is a full mixture of citrus hops and sweet chocolate. Taste is fairly bitter upfront from a combo of burnt grain, hops and strong black coffee. Faintly picking up on yeast and a bit of sweetness in the taste as the beer reaches room temperature. Medium to low carbonation with a medium to light feel. Overall decent with an unexpected amount of citrus hops evident.

No idea how old this bottle is, but I've had it for at least a year. Served in a Surly pint glass.

A - Pours with a finger of tan foam that dissipates to a blotchy haze and thick ring. Not much in the way of lacing, with just a few fingers. Dark brown body with some hints of red to it at the fringes.

S - Cocoa beans, a touch of soy, roasted barley, bitter espresso, and a touch of meaty smokiness in there as well.

T - Taste has a little more caramel with the cocoa and smokiness, and thankfully the soy element has dropped out completely. Still, it tastes a little bit dull - perhaps this bottle is too old. Damn Rogue for not dating anything. There's a bit of an acrid burnt coffee finish as well.

M - Fairly high carbonation going on here. Body is definitively medium and significantly chewy and viscous. The finish is really dry, which is somewhat atypical. This is one of the nicest elements of this brew.

D - Drinkable, but not particularly interesting or exciting. The alcohol is well hidden, and other than the slight over-carbonation it has a nice texture.

Skimmed through some other reviews - apparently this is quite hoppy when it is fresh, but goes downhill fairly quick. However, since there's no bottle dating it's hard to know what one is going to get. I'll re-review if I see it on-tap.

How curious that I have not reviewed this beer until now! I think that part of it was a reluctance on my part o open a 22-fl. oz. bomber by myself. Certainly, I am capable of drinking the whole thing, but it just seems selfish. I picked up this reasonable 12-fl. oz. bottle recently at The Fridge.

From the bottle: "Dedicate to the Rogue in Each of Us"; "100% Pure Rogue"; "World Champion Stout".

After Pop!ping the cap, I decided to go with a heavy-handed pour. This raised three-plus fingers of dense, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with great retention. Color was Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing cola highlights only at the edges. Nose was roasty, chocolaty and with a molasses/treacle bite. Mmmm. Mouthfeel was soft & creamy, but not overly carbonated. Instead, the liquid itself seemed to be like a dollop on my tongue. Mmmm. The taste was a little more bitter than I had expected, closer to black coffee and/or bittersweet chocolate than the nose had suggested. Finish was semi-sweet, slightly smoky, lingering with notes of coffee & dark chocolate. It strikes me as more of a dessert beer than one just to drink on its own, but that is me.

A - pitch black with a soft, off white, creamy head

S - roasty, nutty, faint coffee

T - roasted malt, coffee, creamy, a bit of charcoal

M - full bodied, creamy, smooth, low carbonation

This is a nice, easy to drink stout. The nitro tap adds a great mouthfeel and a creamier taste. The roasted malts and traditional stout flavors are on point and balanced. Overall, this was a very enjoyable pint.

Pours a fairly solid dark brown/black color with a smallish khaki head that persists quite well. Smells of caramel and roast with hints of cream vanilla and earth. Light bits of dark fruit aroma as well as hints of light sugar round out the nose quite well. The flavor is roasty chocolate vanilla with a hint of chalk and earthy hops. Medium body with a creamy velvety smooth mouthfeel and a light level of carbonation. This is a really nice stout, approachable yet flavorful and creamy as hell.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

Giant fist full head created off the pour. Head is tight like a rock with a fistfull cap like head and light brown colored. Falls fairly slowly, sitting on a dark walnut body. Not much else to say not much sticky lacing while drinking.

Good malt and mild cocoa off the nose, kind of has that oatmeal stout feel, that grainy husk thing going for it (similar to Samuel Smith). Feels a little dense. Things are looking up!

Taste at first is a bit bitter and a nice hop actually. Chocolate and malt feeling hits on the end with a nice roast that hints at cigarette tobacco. It's a bit wet though but also has a nice bitterness.

Overall I like my Oatmeal stouts just a tad thicker than this but you know I can't complain about this one right here, it will do no problem.

This is now called Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout for some reason. Cool with me. Served on draft at a local beer bar. Beer is black and forms a thin brown head that breaks quickly. Leaves some but not a lot of lacing on the glass and carbonation is low. The beer is nearly red at the corners of the glass.

Aroma is a mild roast with some side sweetness. Smells fine, could be bigger or have something going on there.

Beer is medium bodied, I was expecting a little more body out of this honestly, I mean its called "Oatmeal" now. Lets do it. Beer is very bitter from the roasted grains, leaves a lingering taste and a graininess in my mouth. It grows in harshness the more I drink. Not my favorite oatmeal stout.

Bomber bottle, pours allmost black with a frothy dark tan head, leaving nice stringy lacing. Nose here is mildly of burnt grains and coffee grounds. this is a bold and full taste stout, pleanty of coffee, chocolate and roasty notes. Smoth and nicely rounded on the tongue, finishes smooth and coating, but not clinging to the tongue, finish is marked with more semi sweet dark chocolate and mildly drying hops. This one has been a classic, fine American micro brew for many years. Hats off and a big thank you to the folks at Rogue for putting this fine stuff out for such a long time.

06/10/05- Purchased at Beltramo's in Menlo Park, CA

Presentation- 22oz bomber, undated, poured into my Rogue Dead Guy Ale pint glass.

Appearance- Black pour with a medium sized dirty chocolate head. Lacing was nice.

Smell- Mostly a light roasted malt and a touch of chocolate.

Taste- Very nice burnt chocolate taste as well as the standard coffee and roasted malt flavor. Quite tasty.

Mouthfeel- A bit more more carbonated than expected, but still an easy sipper.

Drinkability- Rogue impresses once again. One of the best american stouts I have had to date. This one will be purchased again in the future.

I was able to try the Rogue Shakespeare Stout at Moe Joes in D'town Plainfield, IL. The beer poured dark and opaque and very little head formed on the first pour...in addition the beer did not lace. On the second pour there was a bit more head, and some lace. The smell was roast espresso. The taste was pretty much roast and coffee. As the beer warmed a bit of the acidic coffee flavor came out. The mouthfeel was good, fuller bodied stout, which I like and not overly crazy with the alcohol. Overall the beer was decent.

The beer is classic stout color, black, with a dark tan head that when poured dissipates quickly, but remains as a slight ring around the glass. It has a mild citrusy hop aroma (Cascade hops) with dark malt character that blends together nicely. The beer tastes very dark, noting the use of roasted barley and chocolate malts (a little too heavy on the roasted barley). It is also flavored with Cascade hops which gives it a very pleasant hop flavor. It has a med. to heavy body, but is highly drinkable. This is not, in my opinion, one of their better beers, but is still better than many competitors offerings. My only complaint is that the hop flavor is hidden by the use of roasted barley. Nevertheless a great stout!

A - Jet black with a frothy one finger head, with Swiss cheese dimples.

S - Sweet, chocolate syrup and pungent roasted coffee bean. Toasty, dark creme brulee sugars with a touch of sea salt caramel.

T - Sweet, bitter coffee beans and semi sweet cooking chocolate up front. Roasted java and toasty dark grains about. Nice touch of hop bitterness and dry hops as well. A hint of warm alcohol in the back.

M - Slick on the palate like stouts should be, viscous yet not syrupy. A chewy brew.

O - Well rounded, roasty stout with alot of charachter.

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass, the beer is a dark black with some brown highlights under the light. The head is a chunky, light, foamy chocolatey color with good staying power. Aromas of coffee, nut, chocolate, and a little bit of pepper. The flavors are coffee first and foremost, and some slightly sweet chocolatey malt that helps to balance the bitterness. Earthy tones highlight, and there is a robust quality that does not go unnoticed. The beer is light and crisp in mouth, despite the heavy flavors. The aftertaste is bitter roasted coffee again, but with a touch of booze and rich, dark chocolate. Smooth and crisp finish, this beer is light and easy to drink. Very easy to consume in large quantities. Tasty.

A - Midnight brown with cola highlights. Fine bubbled khaki head with great retention and lace.

S - Delicious fresh milled oats with sweet malt and a touch of bitter cocoa and milky sugar.

T - Huge oat profile balanced with dry, bitter dark chocolate. Lightly woody hop center with a kiss of lemon acidity. Chalky chard oats and dusty cocoa powder backend.

M - Medium/light frame. Nice carbonation. Nice smoothness.

O - An excellent example of the style. Delicious, raw oat flavor counter balanced with rich roasty cocoa and just enough brightness from the hops.

Poured a very dark brown almost black with brown highlights that had a half finger of tan head and left lots of frothy lacing sticking to the glass. The nose had some roasitness chocolate malts with citrus notes and also some hop character. After a couple whiffs I didi manage to spot out a little coffee aroma as well. The flavors were pretty much the same as the nose consisting of the chocolate roastiness upfront along with coffee, citrus, and hop accents. The brew was medium in body with a good amount of carbonation which had a slight sweet and slight astringent mouthfeel from the coffee but it didi have a biiter hop finish. It drank quite good but I'm honestly not too enthused about hoppy oatmeal stouts.

On-tap, appropriately, at Shakespeare's in Kalamazoo.

First off, I have to mention this was only $3.75 for a 20 oz. pint while it costs $5.25 for a 22 oz. bomber at Tiffany's in K-zoo. Anyways, Shakespeare Stout is basically, combines a rich and smooth cocoa and coffee malt profile with IPA-like hops flavors. It's a great mix of chocolate and citrus hops, hop chocolate if you will. I think the yeast masks, or takes the edge off, the grains. They're just not as big or complex as a good stout could be. Another good example of a bitter, but dark beer is Smuttynose's Robust Porter, check that out for the malt profile I'm talking about.

A 650ml bottle poured into pint glass.
Black body with a nice 'root-beer float', tan head that lingered for a long while.
smell of coffee, roasted chocolate, some florals and hops. Taste was of mostly that roasted chocolate, coffee and some toast. Creamy, smooth, with a slight bite on the end. Minimal aftertaste, but just enough to remind you of the flavor.
Drinks well at just below room temp.

Pours dark brown to black with a tan head. There is a ton of sediment suspended in the beer even though I poured carefully. There was also a lot of yeast left on the bottom of the bottle. The aroma is chocolate and roasted/burnt malts. The flavor is roasted malts and chocolate, with quite a bit of hop bitterness and bitter dark chocolate. Very creamy mouthfeel and low carbonation.

While I have never tried this side-by-side. this beer reminds me quite a bit of Stone 12th Anniversary Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout.

Appearance: pours black in color with a one finger caramel colored head. The head falls quickly, but remains a thick surface foam. Spotty lacing develops.

Smell: roasted malts and coffee, with some hints of dark chocolate.

Taste: follows the nose, as bold roasted malts, strong coffee, molasses, and a stronger than normal bitterness is rounded with some soft chocolate and prune tones.

Mouthfeel: lightly crisp at the start, with a very dry lightly crisp finish. Medium-heavy in body. Roasted tones and coffee linger well into the aftertaste.

Drinkability: superbly drinkable stout, as the full robust flavors leave you wanting another taste quickly. A great stout everyone should seek out.

22 ounce bottle from Pacific Ranch Market, on to the beer:

This stout pours out thick, leaving an opaque color in the glass and an outstanding head that holds well. The aroma is full of roasted cocoa flavor. Up front on the palate, roasted barley is tasted first, then a wave of mild hops scramble on before a long lingering roasted aftertaste. Chocolate flavors emerge as the beer warms, sweetening things up a bit. Leftovers of chalk sits around in the aftertaste too. A good mix of flavors makes this beer a winner and a role model for how other craft brewers can make thier stouts.
