Polished ebony with no highlights whatsoever. Not even with bright April sunshine behind the glass. The cappuchino colored crown was a lovely cascader to start, and has since settled down to several fingers of bubbly, creamy excellence. Plenty of sticky lace helps as well.
Chocolate stouts should smell like a near equal mixture of chocolate and stout. This one heavily favors the former. No alcohol makes its way out of the glass, which is a huge positive at an ABV of 8.7%.
Rogue Brewery, as they do with most of their lineup, has done a commendable job with DCS. It isn't the best version of the style to have ever entered my glass, but it delivers on Double, on Chocolate, and on Stout. It isn't as delicious as their (Single) Chocolate Stout, but I hadn't had many similar beers at that time and might have gotten carried away a little with that review.
Each sip (okay... gulp) delivers a palate punch of cocoa beaniness that doesn't taste the least bit artificial. A smidgen more Imperial stout roasted maltiness might have bumped the taste score one notch. 50 IBUs worth of bitterness (when fresh) is an appropriate counterbalance to what could've been an overly sweet, dessert beer-like experience.
These guys almost never disappoint when it comes to mouthfeel. This offering is medium-full and has a smooth silkiness that almost earns it the next highest score. Bubbles that are neither too laid back nor too aggressive help immensely.
$12.99 for 750 ml of Rogue beer almost seems like a bargain. While it's no match for the exquisitely aged Imperial Stout that blew me away last month, Double Chocolate Stout is an enjoyable big beer that most anyone should enjoy. Worth a repeat purchase? Yep.
