Deep mahogany brown with ruby highlights. A thick half inch head of dimpled beige foam lingers long. Low floral and toasted malt aroma.

Initial flavor of orange rind and grapefruit hoppiness, mild piney notes. Some understated caramel malt underpinning, and a hint of roasted malt. Very bitter finish, difficult to tell if it's roasty, tannic, astringent, or piney.

Full mouthfeel, round and creamy. Okay beer overall, but would have liked more depth of flavor and complexity.

From a bottle, poured into a tulip. Poured very dark brown, almost black. Completely opaque with 4cm of off-white head that leaves lots of lacing. The nose is hard to coax out, but does eventual develop a dark roasted malt, char, and piney, grassy hops hiding underneath. Taste is that of stale coffe, bittersweet chocolate with some grapefruit that just do not play well together. The finish is very long with an unsettling hop bitterness and roasted malt that just sits there on your tongue. The flavors in this beer just seem to bash against each other. Not my favorite black IPA.

Poured into a pint glass. Had a finger and half of tan head on top of a brown body, color matched the bottle.

The smell was almost exclusively pine.

It had a sharp lemon and grapefruit taste at first, moved to a less bitter with the malt in the middle, and ended with pine bitterness that lasted.

The body is soft and medium with moderate carbonation.

It's a tasty drink and fairly strong on the "IPA" side.

Pours a very dark brown that borders on black color and shows the brown when held up to light; huge creamy 2 finger tan head that faded slowly, leaving a layer on top and very good lacing clinging to the sides and foamy rings as it went down.

Smells of chocolate malt, roasted grains, caramel, cocoa powder, floral hops, herbs and pine cone/piney hops; a nice combo of roasted malts and hops, which is slightly more malt dominant. Not a classic IPA nose, but very aromatic and enjoyable.

Tastes of chocolate malt, floral hops, roasted grains, caramel, herbs, cocoa powder, coffee grinds, toasted malt, peat moss, pine cone/piney hops, biscuit, wheat bread, lemon zest, grapefruit and some bitterness that is part hops and part coffee, almost impossible to determine; tastes more hoppy and like an IPA than the nose lead on, and it’s almost fitting to call this brew a black IPA as it seems like dirt and coffee grinds were dumped into an IPA. The roasted malts and hops balance out reasonable well, and then the overall bitterness just cranks up control of the flavor with malt, hops and coffee in what seems like a tasty mash. Very flavorful, and a black IPA for any coffee fan out there.

Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, almost slick on the tongue, with very light carbonation, a medium chewy body and an intense bitterness that hides the alcohol well and leaves a nice hoppy pucker followed by an almost dry burnt coffee flavor that lingers for a while.

This beer grew on me and got better as the bomber went down. I like Stone’s Black IPA’s better, but this was a pretty tasty beer and one I’d definitely have again.

I only tried the Malt Liquor once and cant really remember it so im in two different minds about them changing this to a Black IPA netherless its a style i like so its worth a shot and on pouring did someone say RED IPA or BLACK IPA as pours a very deep copper red hue with a nice two finger creamy head and lacing everywhere, the smell is dark malts, caramel candy and fruity resinous hops, the mouthfeel is medium bodied and really sessionable with tastes of toffee, caramelised plums, nectarines, candy and finished with bitter fruity hops and overall its alright but for me its more of a Red IPA then a black IPA and im left a little confused.

Serving Type - 22oz bottle

Appearance - Tanish copper brown, nice foamy 3+ inch head and tons of lacing.

Smell - Malts, hops, sugars, cocoa, a slight yeast aromoa and some grapefruit/orange.

Taste - Nice hop bite mixed with some cocoa and chooclate malty notes. Added sugars balance this out some. Theres a big piney hop bite at the finish. The malts give this a porter-like flavor actually thats hopped up.

Mouthfeel - Medium thickness, tounge gets alot of hops, malts and sugars, were palate gets mostly hops with some cocoa and choclate. Aftertaste is hop bitter and a little sour.

Overall - Not bad, plenty of flavor just seems like its not balanced perfectly with the malts and hops. Would be better as a ipa or even just a porter other then the styles combined as one. Worth a drink, just not the best black ipa out there.

I haven't bought a Rogue product (other than the totally solid Yellow Snow) for 5 years, but the promise of a BIPA was too much to pass up. Pours an opaque very dark brown with two fingers of dense khaki foam, thick-ish sheeting on the glass. Looks great. Smell: smells like dehusked carafa... just the hint of roast and brown bread, spruce-y and vaguely citric c-hops. Taste: a little roast, some raisin-bread, pine and tangerine. Not amazing, but definitely enjoyable.
