Beer review from BA Mag Nov 2007.

We prefer the previous name but we know the ceiling is very short when it comes to marketing beer with potty humor--aka Yellow Snow Ale. Brewed with whole juniper berries, four malts, three hops and their house yeast.

Sizeable foamy head from a normal decanting, the head dissipates to a thin ring of lace after a while. Weathered-gold color still glows with a good clarity. Soft aromatics of citric floral hops, steely juniper and biscuity malt infiltrate the nostrils. Trademark Rogue smoothness always aims for the bull's-eye of being quaffable, impeccably smooth with a medium body. Bready malt flavors with some sweetness to start, then a quick shot of juniper which runs sharp but not harsh. Hop bitterness finally kicks in to bring the balance full circle. Clean palate. After a few more sips the steely juniper flavor sticks to the taste buds a bit more but never too much. Oily hop flavors complement the juniper with woody, herbal and mild citric notes. Finishes a touch dry with a faded lingering juniper character.

This is a great example of what extreme beer can be--simple but still extreme. You have a Pale and add juniper berries to it--right there the brewer is thinking outside of the box. Toss the turkey to the dogs, a juicy glazed ham will do the trick for the holiday pairing. If not for the pairing it is at least a good conversation beer.

Big and malty like all the other Rogue beers, but there's something lacking. Hops are a bit off too ... pungent with a strong, raw/oily aftertaste.

Presentation: 22oz bomber with no freshness date to be found. Ingredients and a blurb about the brew on the label.

Appearance: Mild tobacco earthy aroma with a spicy hop / juniper and pale malt sweetness.

Smell: No not the colour of yellow snow, more of a full glow of bronze with a patchy white lace.

Taste: Smooth with a crisp malt and fullish mouth feel, herbal and almost tobacco like hop bitterness and flavour erupt in the mouth with a light juniper berry flavour. Mild fruitiness with a sweet and malty back round, grainy finish. Hop flavour lingers and becomes a bit astringent along with a touch of juniper that brings a little sparkle to the brew.

Notes: Not a bad brew at all though hops seem to over take the brew with an earthened hop flavour that may not be agreeable with some beer drinkers.

I liked it! Almost no head on the golden-amber colored ale. Nose had bread-like maltiness with a background of spiciness and piney juniper berries. Taste was the best part, a wonderful balance of malt, hop and spice. A honey, bread malt invites you in, followed by the spice, very piney-notes that come from the conifer juniper berries. The berries are completed with some gentle, but noticeable hops, floral and citrusy in nature like a weak IPA which really wrap it up to a crisp and slightly bitter end to balance out the malt and sweetness present throughout.

I disagree with all the average reviews, this juniper ale was a well-balanced, juniper pine spices were quite noticeable, which went great with the honey malt flavors and the hops at the finish. Worth getting again.
