A- Pale sunshiny yellow color. Very golden incandescent bottom, with a darker honey near the head. Light, straw colored head that left little lacing. This beer looked like a summery ginger ale mixed cocktail.

S- Nose immediately hit me with fresh honeycomb, pine, and lemon atop a pale malt backbone. I noticed as it warmed more of a citrus element to the hops and faint blackberries. Lots of dried, crusted honey.

T- Smooth, moderately earthy pale malt flavor with light grass and hay that meld with spicy fruit and honey. Finishes with a surprisingly crisp hop kick of pine, spruce, and mint; the spicy bitterness is an enjoyable balance to the flavor hops. Sweeter characters of light fruits, biscuits, and apricots shined even more as it warmed.

MF- Clean flavor profile with a sweet, slightly oily body. Surprising lingering hop activity on the tongue with an aftertaste of faint menthol and mint in the throat. Banana like wax texture pairs with a mild syrupy body.

O- A gentle, earthy, plant-like pale ale with some added fruity sweetness and spice. Still had body, mouthfeel was a bit odd, but this could be a great beer for an occasion or food pairing, or even to throw at someone who typically prefers wine or sugary cocktails. Maybe this could act as a gateway beer?

12oz bottle into tulip

A: a very pale hazy with a moderate head that has O.K. retention and lacing.

S: aroma is more that of an assertive american pale. good balance between the american hops as well as malts. not much of the juniper berries thus far. as it warms more juniper comes out, but still it is a little faint for my liking.

T: a crisp and menthol-ly hop flavor. obviously from both the hops are the juniper berries. a light malt body backs both. more of the juniper comes out as the beer warms.

M: moderate mouthfeel on a light/medium body. a bit too light.

D: not a bad tasting brew, but not really worth seeking in particular. more on the APA side of that and a herbed beer. like i stated above wouldnt hate more juniper on both the nose and the palate. drinkable for sure, but leaves me longing more.

Overall, this was a disappointing effort from Rouge. Plenty of citrus notes (lemon rind, most notably), and of course, juniper. The taste, however, was too dry and left almost nothing on my taste buds on the finish. The mouthfeel was really watery, even for a spiced beer. It is quite refreshing, however, and the smell is pleasant. This is the sort of spiced beer that could have worked on a hot, summer day, except for the juniper, Christmas-tree-like aftertaste. Not bad, but disappointing considering Rouge has put out some great stuff.

Juniper Pale Ale pours a golden yellow color into my snifter. Only a sliver of an off-white head, which disappears completely within a minute. Average to below average lacing for this brew. The nose is mainly lemon, pineapple, hops and malt. There's an earthy-ness to the nose as well. The taste is fairly underwhelming. I get the hops, but beyond that.... not much. It's also so dry that I can't really get much- the flavors evaporate off your tongue so fast I can't identify them. The earthy/lemon quality is still there in the taste as well. Feel is super thin and way too dry. Overall, this one misses the mark for me. Cheers.

Poured into a pint glass.

A: Pours a hazed gold with about a 1/2 finger of head that dissipates slowly. Thin coating of lacing and heavy carbonation.

N: Juniper berries and caramel with some light citrus and grapefruit.

T: Lemon citrus and grapefruit upfront followed by caramel and grains. Finishes with bitter lemon rind and juniper berries.

M: Medium bodied, crisp, bitter and dry.

O: Has a nice bitterness for a Pale Ale. The juniper berries are a nice little touch in the finish. Nothing extraordinary even for a Pale.

Appearance- Golden straw coloured with a creamy white head. Bubbles are present and is slightly opaque. Has nice lacing that clings to the glass as you drink this ale.

Smell- Hops with citrus fruits. No detection of junipers at this moment.

Taste- Dry and hoppy with a piney bitter finish. Juniper flavour is mild.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied with prickly bubbles present. Good carbonation to this one with a nice tingle.

Overall- A good ale but I expected more juniper in this. An easy drinking ale that is sure to please any Rogue fan.

Lightly scented pine nose with a hint of gin and fresh hay overtones. Decent head with lacy retention, larger bubbles mix with the ring of foam at each bend of the elbow. A dense, golden amber color, the cloudy brew is evenly translucent.

The juniper astringency hits the lips and tongue first, with further bitterness imparted by the hops in the middle palate, followed by some hints of grapefruit. Smoothly carbonated, the ale is a fresh blast of light malts and citric grain, with just a bit of sweetness lingering at the tip of the tongue and a little residual bitterness on the back palate.

This brew is a good companion for a Lake Superior whitefish broiled with fresh herbs and lime.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this ale but when I poured
the first few ounces, I thought I was in for something really
special.

A - an ENORMOUS fluffy white head leaving immense lacing with
a very light amber clear color almost like an industrial beer.

S - the first few seconds after pouring were a wonderful snoutful
of juniper aroma. unfortunately, it did not linger long at all.

T - nicely balanced, clean with a small maltiness, piney bitterness.

M - really excellent. makes it extremely drinkable.

This was a surprisingly good beer which could be very drinkable.
Although, I would not feel the need to seek it out too frequently.

I first tried this deliciously interesting mix at the Great Canadian Beer Festival in Victoria, BC back in September 2011. It was so interesting that when I took a trip down to Portland a few weeks ago, I made sure to pick up a sixer to revisit it.

I think what really gets me is the fact it uses such an interesting ingredient like juniper berries to give the beer that extra flavourful punch. I grew up with juniper trees/bushes in my backyard and never once thought such a thing could make a drink that was not only consumable, but delicious.

Still, not a favourite of mine, but definitely in the "unique, and will definitely revisit" pile.

(And thus concludes my first beer review on this site!)
