The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer - just drink it and enjoy.

Bomber poured into a tulip glass over the course of an evening. Interesting description on the bottle, a brew unsure if its an IPA or a barleywine, and indeed, this offering does integrate key features of each style in a surprisingly effective fashion. Beer styles are clearly continuous rather than categorical variables ;). A light cloudy yellow-orange with ample rich and creamy off-white head. An initial sniff reveals spicy pine resin and fresh citrus rind, the expected IPA level of hop aroma and a sweet buttery malt undercurrent, with hints of peanut brittle and ripe tropical fruit. This one conveys a remarkable and perhaps unexpected degree of complexity on the palate. Pancakes and syrup, graham cracker, cotton candy, and rum-soaked raisins mingle with black tea, grapefruit and orange rinds, lychee, white grape juice, peach, and a massive cantaloupe melon flavor ... A veritable codex of hop flavors in lockstep with very sweet malts. Although these two dimensions are not integrated and do vie for one's attention, they do not exactly clash either. There is a fair amount of alcohol bite although I wouldn't say this brew tastes too hot. An American barleywine is going to feature some booze on the palate. Smooth body, on the thick side of moderate, mid-range carbonation and big resinous hops in the finish. Excellent hop flavor if a tad too sweet.

750ml blue-painted bottle. I do like the confusion implied in the name, for some reason. Truth in advertising, perhaps? Methinks I may be inclined to ramble on a bit too long about it. Thanks be to doktorzee for enabling this.

This beer pours a hazy, pale golden yellow colour, with four fingers of billowy, foamy, and somewhat creamy off-white head, which leaves some sudsy chain link fence lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of crisp, biscuity pale and caramel malts, dry boozy esters, mild citrus rind, tart tropical fruit, and herbal, piney hop notes. The taste is more semi-sweet caramel, crystallized toffee, crackery white bread, somewhat acerbic pine extract, bitter tangerine and kiwi fruit, more indistinct citrus peel, a mild mint julep-like spiciness, and rather sedate warming alcohol.

The carbonation is pleasantly tight and progressive, the body an adequate medium weight, and mostly smooth, a slight airy creaminess popping in and out of perception. It finishes off-dry, the crackery, faintly caramelized malt still running the show, albeit almost remotely, it seems, while the mix of pine forest floor, worldly citrus, and masked spice bitterness provides a decent insurgency.

Certainly more of a hoppy-leaning DIPA, than anything outright barleywine-ish, even by Yankee standards. Maybe the well-integrated, large ABV could push opinion in the other direction, but the lack of any old, musty esters precludes me even further from championing the latter. Overall, a pleasant, definitely warming, and surprisingly balanced (both the malt and hops weirdly restrained, but for the better) DIPA, but, given its provenance, I won't shit on anyone who wants to keep this New Crustacean in the same boat as the Old.

Where traditional Barleywine is quickly falling from favor, the attempt to "American-ize" them leads to a drier malt structure and a heightened sense of hoppiness. But where does American Barleywine and and Imperial IPA begin? That's the line that brewers flirt with, however it's one that Rogue has chosen to exploit!

Unlike Barleywine, the strong ale pours surprisingly light. Golden or light amber, the ale looks much more like pale ale. Modest in its haze, the beer sheds a creamy off-white blanket of foam that locks onto the beer and refuses distension. Lightly broken lace clings to the glass as the beer sinks.

Its boisterous bouquet opens up with all things hoppy. Floral scents weave in and out of highly citrusy grapefruit, orange, pineapple and apricot. Its accompanying notes of fresh-cut grass, pine and mild chive round out the beer's hoppiness while caramel and honey character support the hops and bring the nose into balance.

Its malty-sweet upstart is decadent with caramel, honey and biscuit- taking graham cracker form. But the middle palate of hops balance the sweetness with its citrus acidity and herbal spiciness. Pink grapefruit, ripe oranges and those tropical fruit flavors carry the ale into finish where the citrus turns resinous- like pine, grass and light chive.

Its malty-dry body is creamy and lingers with sweetness. Even as the spicy and mildly solventy alcohol spices keep the session warm; and as the resiny-dry finish crispens the mouthfeel considerably- the beer's malt is intent to balance the taste- down to the bitter end.

Rogue has straddled the fence of Imperial IPA and Barleywine to perfection. Where I think that the intent was a big IPA, its malt insistence refuses to take the backseat that the style demands. Its this balance that makes it Barleywine- well, kinda, sorta.

This beer just looks like it's up right my alley,pours into an imperial nonic a hazed apricot color with frothy half finger white head atop that lasts for quite awhile.Big juicy fruity esters in the nose,they really jump out at ya,after it sits some sweet alcohol is detected.Big alcohol and caramel/toffee sweetness along with fruity hops,not much hoppy bitterness but it does come into play a little in the finish.This is the type of beer that really makes me happy Iam into craft beer,yeah Rogue has made some clunkers recently and the name changing stuff is annoying but this beer renews my faith in this old school craft brewer.Great stuff...in my opinion.

Had this on tap at ROGUE Ales Publick House in San Francisco - labeled as "Chatoe New Crusty". I was told by the beertender that it was a triple IPA and 13.5% ABV but I doubt it. Best I can tell it is a barleywine and ABV of 10.8%.

Sparkling medium gold pour, white head, nice lacing. Aroma of dates and alcohol. Crisp flavor, some canned fruit salad, some caramel, a bit of licorice and a boozy finish. Alcohol hidden well. Thick, sticky mouthfeel. I’m not what it was but I liked it.

22 oz bottle. Pours hazy dark golden orange with a medium creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is fruity piney hops with some caramel malt and some alcohol.

The flavor is sweet fruity caramel malt with lots of resiny piney hops and some harsh fusel alcohol in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, nice fruit and hops but the harsh alcohol is a bit overbearing.

Appearance - Pours a hazy golden orange with an off-white, 2 finger head. Good retention, resulting in a thin but consistent film across the surface. Spotty lacing with fair stick.

Smell - Orange and caramel hit the nose first. Hints of banana and pineapple. Mild alcohol heat.

Taste - Follows the nose. Deep caramel base, complimented by notes of orange, pineapple and banana. Light notes of dark fruit. Orange pith bitterness and a mild caramel sweetness in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Thick, full-bodied and chewy/syrupy like your typical BW. Smooth. Inviting for another sip.

Overall - Hmm, I'm wondering if this was, in the least, a partial inspiration for the Class of '88 Barleywine Collab, or vice-versa. Though the ingredients differ, the flavor and body hold a lot of similarities. Really does ride the edge between a IIIPA and BW. Maybe even a touch of strong dunkelweizen-like character. Nice balance. Mellow, with a citrus bite. Really drinkable.

Pours a half finger of head on a cloudy medium straw colored body.
The aroma is musty barn hay...
The taste has an assertive orange and grapefruit flavor, to include the bitterness, at first. There are some very sweet malt notes that snake their way in and out. And the booze is there too.
The texture is thick with low carbonation.
It's a big beer with big flavors. Interesting for sure.

Big thank you to mom and dad for bringing back this bottle and many more from the Rogue brewery in Newport.

Appearance. Pours a bright and hazy orange with two fingers of thick, cream coloured head .

Smell. Candied orange rinds, lemon and grapefruit, along with sweet caramel and grainy light malts. This is going to be one hoppy bwine.

Taste. Big orange, grapefruit and lemon rinds, some candied pineapple, caramel and sweet grainy light malts. Big and quite tasty. Alcohol very well hidden but for the heat in the back of my throat.

Mouthfeel. Full body, but maybe not quite as big as I was expecting from the sweet and full smell. Smooth low carbonation, just a bit sticky on the lips. Slight warming in the back of the throat hints at the big abv.

Overall. Surprised by this one, it's a tasty brew that's flown under my radar. Would be happy to drink this again.
