Dedicated to Crustaceans
The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer - just drink it and enjoy.

Had this on tap at ROGUE Ales Publick House in San Francisco - labeled as "Chatoe New Crusty". I was told by the beertender that it was a triple IPA and 13.5% ABV but I doubt it. Best I can tell it is a barleywine and ABV of 10.8%.

Sparkling medium gold pour, white head, nice lacing. Aroma of dates and alcohol. Crisp flavor, some canned fruit salad, some caramel, a bit of licorice and a boozy finish. Alcohol hidden well. Thick, sticky mouthfeel. I’m not what it was but I liked it.

The bottle grabbed my attention, love it!

A: Pours a clear, golden copper in color with an inch of thick, creamy foam atop. Tons of lacing on the glass edges as you drink. Carbonation looks strong, although the bubbles are small so it shouldn't be too aggressive. A beautiful beer, to be sure.

S: Sweet and spicy on the nose with floral and tropical fruit hops and bready, toasted malts. A bit of bubble gum and a touch of alcohol astringency. Comes off pretty much as described on the bottle, with a mixture of barley wine and IPA notes.

T: Follows the nose pretty well. Sweet and spicy up front with toasty, bready malts to balance things out a little bit. Finishes dry with toasted bread at first but quickly giving way to a bitter, citrus rind and stomach bile aftertaste. At 11.6% ABV the alcohol is masked fairly well, although it is definitely more distinguishable as it warms. That said, a bit astringent for my tastes.

M: Medium bodied, this one goes down smooth with a bit of chewiness and a lot of bite. A bit of a palate wrecker, it does coat the tongue a bit and the aftertaste lasts and lasts. Fairly drinkable considering the ABV.

O: Another quality and unique brew from Rogue. In terms of appearance and mouthfeel this one is definitely a winner, but on the tongue it is far too astringent for my tastes as I find myself struggling just to finish the bottle. Somehow, I can picture this being an excellent pirate swig, but unless I'm out hoisting the jolly roger, I'll pass next time. If you're a fan of double IPA's and barley wine, I'm sure this will please. Cheers!

A: Pours a cloudy straw color with a small amount of white head. Clumps of foam retain, leaving mild lacing.

S: Grassy, grapefruit-y hops, with a fair amount of malt background.

T: Sweet, hoppy, and grassy. It's a pretty strange blend, as the name suggests, with both barleywine and imperial IPA notes. Pretty good overall, though.

M: Full body, medium carbonation.

Overall, definitely unique. I'm not sure I love it, but I do quite like it. I'd recommend trying it.

Pours a half finger of head on a cloudy medium straw colored body.
The aroma is musty barn hay...
The taste has an assertive orange and grapefruit flavor, to include the bitterness, at first. There are some very sweet malt notes that snake their way in and out. And the booze is there too.
The texture is thick with low carbonation.
It's a big beer with big flavors. Interesting for sure.

On-tap 4 June 2014 at a Rogue bar in the Portland airport.

In a big heavy 12 oz. Rogue goblet. Pours an opaquely murky pale orange-yellow wheat. Brought with a thin layer of whitish head, excellent retention and outstanding lacing. The color and cloudiness are unique.

Smell is somewhat absent. Malty, hoppy, but just not much there. Perhaps due to the serving temp, but even warmed up it was faint.

Taste is quite interesting. Hopped-up, but malted-up to balance it. Waves of bitter and not-quite-sweet grains. Golden, rich, robust. This is my kind of barleywineish beer - potent on both sides, letting each shine.

Feel is good. Pretty darn heavy, sitting thick in the mouth. Carbonation is medium-low, but it's enough to stir things up. Strong in the middle, and lasting, allowing those rich malts and biting hops to come through.

Fals at an interesting point on the spectrum. I find it to be more like a balanced barleywine than a malty DIPA, but either way I like like it.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium coppery amber with a one finger white head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of light caramel malt, grassy hops, mixed light fruit. Doesn't really smell like either an IIPA nor a barleywine, but has some elements of both. Interesting flavor, starts with rich caramel malt, tropical, stone and apple family light fruit and grassy hops then tapers off into a very bitter hop finish that was almost resiny in intensity, but without the evergreen flavor components that usually support resiny hops. Long, lingering bitter finish with light residual caramel and mild grassy hop flavors. Medium to heavy bodied with an appropriate barleywine mouth feel. A bit of a roller coaster of flavor; my initial response was mmmm, better than expected with nice rich concentrated fruit and malt flavors, but soon a wtf when the much more stark bittering compounds kicked in. Fortunately as my tongue got hop fatigue, there was a better balance of the quite nice initial flavors and the intense finish and I enjoyed this more. I really liked the initial flavors and do not enjoy the finish. I'm torn about cellaring one of these. Old Crusty was a trusted cellarable barleywine, and if the initial flavors in this intensify and improve and the finish balances out, this could be great too. I'm on the fence on this one. Interesting with some great flavors, but perhaps too stark and tongue shredding in the finish. (You know I'm going to cellar one, I just can't help myself…more at 11:00… or 2016).
