Dedicated to Crustaceans
The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer - just drink it and enjoy.

11.6% ABV

Appearance - Pours a clear copper with two fingers of bubbly white head.

Smell - citrus hops, tropical fruits (passionfruit, mango), grapefruit, bready caramel malts, dark fruits (plum, raisin), heat from the alcohol.

Taste - hit right away with the citrus hops, tropical fruits, grapefruit peel, pine resin, bready caramel malts and dark fruits.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes with a pleasant blend of the sweetness from the bready caramel malts and bitterness from the citrus hops and pine resin.

Overall - Rogue delivers an enjoyable cohesive blend of ingredients of an Imperial IPA with an American Barleywine. The aroma needs a minor tweak to bring out more of the hops. However, this one definitely speaks to Rogue's brewing creativity by pushing the envelope. An enjoyable brew nonetheless.

750 ml bottle into snifter, 2014 bottling. Pours fairly hazy golden orange color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, apricot, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel/rind, pine, floral, grass, caramel, toffee, honey, biscuit, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity and balance of big citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, apricot, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel/rind, pine, floral, grass, caramel, toffee, honey, biscuit, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, apricot, pineapple, lemon zest, orange rind, pine, caramel, toffee, honey, biscuit, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and balance of big citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with a good malt/bitterness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a smooth, fairly creamy/slick, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent blonde barleywine style. All around great complexity and balance of big citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
