This beer is thick, not in the body but in the color, which is brown-red with a red-orange hue at the edges. A soft, big-bubbled off-white head keeps up at half a finger and sticks spotty lace to the glass.
The aroma is very interesting and unusual, giving off a conglomeration of earth, grains, yeast, dough, a hint of sweetness, and a very light spiciness.
The flavor is earthy, sort of elemental, so to speak, and lightly steely, a slight touch meaty, and somewhat estery with a hint of citrus. Rye seems to add more earth than spiciness, possibly offset by the particular nature of the yeast implemented.
This beer has a Schwarzbier-like body, light and crisp despite its bolder look. It's a bit dry but it's also creamy.

Tap at Coles:Pretty earthy rye beer. Black bodied, pleasant aroma. Above average mouthfeel. SLight sour finish. Decent drinkability.
Bottle: Initially promising, very dark thick bodied with a long lasting head. Sme roast, smoke. But after a moment you noice something a little off, and then a little sour taste. Rye edge but significant off flavours beneath the smoke and rye. Unfortunately didn’t make the grade.I think from Champane’s Cellars.

Pours a hazy, deep amber color with a frothy white head.
Smells of earthy hops.
Tastes of some earthiness with a little rye. Malts lead off with some rye sharpness and some graininess. This then leads to a bit of earthy hops. Finishes with a bit of bitterness. The graininess detracts from everything.
Mouthfeel is medium with a crisp amount of carbonation.
Overall, this is a swing and a miss for me.

Dark brown in the pint shaker. Pleasant foam and tongue-tingling carbonation. Kind of malty-sweet with a truly unusual flavor. Perfumey with the tang I associate with buckwheat. I thought it might be a higher percentage of rye, and Rogue says this has both malted and flaked rye, but it also has Weyermann Smoked Malt.
Dark roasted malt flavors and quite grainy. Tangy but not too sharp. A little fruity. Plenty drinkable, but takes some getting used to.
On tap at the Rogue Ales bar on Union in North Beach, San Francisco, January 22.

Appearance: Very dark amber, nearly black with about a nice half inch brown head.
Smell: Slightly hoppy, malty smell.
Taste: Bitter and hoppy with a sweet start and a dry bitter finish.
Mouthfeel: Smooth but dryish bitterness.
Overall: overall a pretty good rye, but nothing special.
