06/07 update: this year they have greatly improved their beer selection...they always had a nice list, but didn't usually have the good stuff in reality. So, they now charge anywhwere from $5 - $11 for a pitcher, but still a steal for good beer and I am quite happy to pay the higher price since they actually have the good beer and the lines seem cleaner. Nice improvement for beer lovers.
Been here many times. A rather tough place to rate since it is rather eclectic. Basically, this is a college bar. Very cheap beer and decent food to match. It is near the University of Hawaii, and doesn't even have a wall facing Unversity Avenue. Pitchers of beer are only $5-$8 depending on what you order. Very, very cheap for Hawaii [most places charge $5 for a glass]. They have a ton of taps...but I have found that usually at least half are not working. So, their impressive array of beers is very deceptive. I usually have to go through a few to find one that they have. Also, I am not sure that they clean their lines regularly. Anyway, what do you want for the price?
Place is plastic chairs and crumbling tables. Very basic. Definite shorts and slippers type of place. They get packed with the college crowd around 9 p.m.
Food is up and down. Definitely college bar type of food. You order at the counter [for beer, you have to go to the bar]. So, there really isn't any service. Just don't be in a rush after ordering your food...you often have to wait 30-45 minutes for the food. They have:
Sandwhiches [$7-10], Pizza [$9.50-30], salads [$4-7], all sorts of fries [cheese, cajun, jalapeno, garlic or any combination], burgers, BB wings. Skip the fries [basic frozen kind]. Magoos special pizza is excellent, salads are nice and big,. Anyway, food is basic and usually decent. They also have a sushi bar. I've never tried anything from it, but the stuff looks good.
So, if you are in the mood for some decent, cheap beer and matching food in a very basic setting, this is your best bet in Honolulu.

I'm sad to be writing this review, but since they still haven't changed Magoo's status to *CLOSED* (I heard they doubled the rent and they're turning it into a high-rise rental building), I figure I'll get my last word in.
I loved this joint from the get-go -- probably 120 taps from really good brews (a few from rogue, deschutes, kona, spaten, paulener, etc.) to macro adjunct lagers, cheap cheap prices ($5 pitchers of coors light, $10 pitchers of Rogue ales), good pizza, very good sushi & poke. What's not to like?
Sure, frat-house atmosphere, tapped kegs, dirty lines, & overworked bartenders. Get over it. I'm having a hard time getting over Magoo's. R.I.P.

"Animal House" frat boy mystique. Very run down dump. Rusty ductwork over the bar, dirty broken tile floor, ratty plywood bar, vinyl stool covers and table coverings.
If you like living like a slob, this is your place.
Would have been a big Zero except for the very hot looking bar maid. I visited on a slow weekday afternoon. Had to beg for a beer. The geeky regular bar man was cleaning up after the prior night and couldn't be bothered. The girl was clueless about beer, "I really don't like to drink beer", but tried to find me a working tap for something to drink.
About 100 taps at the bar but maybe 20 that actually had beer running through them. All the macros seemed to operate but it took me five tries to get a craft beer that was actually operational. None of the Hawaiian local taps seemed to be working. Since this was a Monday, perhaps the distributor hadn't caught up since the weekend.
The beer I had, Red Hook IPA, was quite acceptable if a little mainstream. Too bad the Spaten, Rogue, Urquell, Black Butte all seemed to be out of action. I find it quite deceptive to have so many taps on display with actually just the macros working
Good pizza at fair prices. The saving grace for this place
A single mug of about 10 ounces was $1.50 at lunch time which is a good price. The 9" deluxe pizza was $9.50.
Overall, if you want good beer near Waikiki, go to Brew Moon. If you like a dumpy, dirty, college kid place, this is your choice. By the way, another annoyance was cash only transactions. Every order required me to reach for my wallet. I guess the college boys dine-and-dash too often so cash is the rule.
