Pours a clear, amber colour with a tight, creamy, white head. Good head retention.
Aromas are fairly obvious with smoke, burning rubber and bacon all playing a role.
Hopfenrauch has a complex flavour with the smoked beer passed through the 'Modus Hoperandus' filled with smoked hops. I get burning rubber which fades to a soften bacon-like smoke. There is a reasonable hop character playing a role and working with the smoke. A good, bitter lingering finish.
A medium body holds up the flavours while crisp carbonation helps to make sure the flavour isn't too powerful.
For a rauchbier, this is very drinkable. The interplay of the hops and the smoke is very good and makes this a fairly drinkable beer which doesn't knock you out.
