Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is fairly mellow and is of dark roasted malt, sugar, and some slight cocoa aromas. Taste is much the same with a mild roasty and charred bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but the smell is lacking somewhat in my opinion.

Appearance: Dark brown-black brew with a nice tan head.
Smell: Typical Schwarzbier aroma. Roast malt, minerals, coffee and chocolate.
Taste: Roast malt, a touch of hops and coffee. Bitter chocolate and dried fruit in the finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium body. Slightly chalky.
Drinkablity: Good Schwarzbier. Fits style well. A better black beer than most Japanese brewer's attempts at the style.

You would never expect to find a micro-brew from the barrel at an international conference, but the chairman here in Sapporo did us proud. Totally unexpected and a joy to behold. Apparently there is also some connection with one of the Sapporo microbreweries, but I lost my notes.
We had 2 beers on offer from Baeren- the pilsner and the black.
The black was classic Japanese sytle. On the sweet side, and with faint liquorice hints. Looked good and held well on to the glass. In my opinion they have a bit to go to catch up with the USA in this category, but I wouldnt throw it out of my glass.
