Sam's is first and foremost a terrific wine shop. As a beer store, it's a very pleasant alternative to many "hardcore" retailers. Instead of the usual piles of beer everywhere, Sam's has a neat, efficient cooler full of interesting Belgians, micros, and well-selected imports.
Nothing here will knock your socks off, but the owner is a very affable guy who knows beer and is willing and able to engage in conversation on the topic--something that employees of even the "best" beer stores seem loathe to do. Prices are high, but I figure I'm paying a little extra for an enjoyable, small-scale beer buying experience. (Think of it as a civility tax.)
I like stores like this--I'm a sucker for the underdog--and I feel good spending my money here.

This is a great little wine shop. I wish I could evaluate its atmosphere. It would be a 5. The selection is minimal, but the quality is high. Belgians, and local crafts mostly. I picked up a sixer of Rush River Bubblejack. It goes for $7.99 and is an underrated brew IMHO. They've also got Hennepin, Chimay, Fat Tire, Surly, etc. The owner is the coolest ever. Support this place if you can. It's very romantic in a Brasserie-like way, like Barbette in Uptown. They have parking right there on the east side of the building, so don't just drive past in wonder. Go in there. It rules. They just need more selection in the beer section.
