Snapperhead is an IPA, but the nose immediately sets it apart from its peers: instead of grapefruit and pine hops notes, Snapperhead is devoid of the earthy pine scent, and favors instead a clean, almost effervescent grapefruit citrus nose, much like what I'd expect a grapefruit sparkling water to smell like.

On the tongue, the beer is indeed hoppy, but again, it's a clean grapefruit hoppiness, like freshly-squeezed juice. Below this is a nice layer of malts, giving the beer a decent body of apricot and orange flavors, biscuit-like grains, and light brown sugars. The aftertaste is mainly hops, and fades fairly quickly. Mouthfeel is light, and carbonation is medium-heavy.

Overall, Snapperhead makes for a good entry-level IPA, with just enough hops to separate it from the field, but not enough to overwhelm someone new to the style. I suspect hop lovers will be put off by the clean grapefruit flavors in here, and the beer does indeed seem slightly out of balance with the lack of deep and earthy pine flavors. It's decent and flavorful, then, but sacrifices wisdom for peppiness.

12 oz can, no date

pours a clear golden color, with bone-white head. very good head retention and a bit of lacing. not much hop aroma for an IPA. not much in the taste either. a bit of malt flavor, and a bit of earthy hop flavor. thin body, medium carbonation.

either this can is pretty old, or it didn't start off great.

Undated can at 35 degrees into imperial pint glass
Aroma of apples
Head large (6 cm), off white, creamy, very slowly diminishing to a 3 mm layer.
Lacing good, many islands and reefs of small to medium bubbles
Body medium orange, hazy
Flavor begins with both bitter and sour overtones; not really sure what I’m tasting. There is no distinct fruit, pine, or flower taste; no alcohol, no diacetyl, no malt. This definitely leaves an unpleasant aftertaste with a very long hang time.
Palate medium, watery, soft carbonation.

This has a very pleasing appearance, aroma, and palate. However, the flavor is pretty bad, making me long for a lot of diacetyl or skunkiness. Definitely a Jekyll and Hyde experience.
