Served cool from a 12 oz can into a Boston Lager glass.

Pours with a modest light colored head that leaves virtually no lacing. Color is a clear, dark brown.

Aroma is decent with a hint of ash and some roastiness.

Flavor is weak, and masked by a strong astringency.

Mouthfeel is fizzy and astringent.

Overall, not an enjoyable beer. It wasn't toxic or anything, but glad I only bought one can and not a 6-pack. Can't recommend this one.

Can packaged 5/22/14 at 40 degrees into imperial pint
Aroma of roasted malt
Head large (5.5 cm), light brown, creamy with rocks, rapidly diminishing to
Lacing
Body dark brown/black, opaque
Flavor begins with a roasted malt sweetness, but not too sweet. Ends with a slight bitterness, maybe a hint of bitter chocolate. No hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl.
Palate medium, watery, soft carbonation.

This is a quite tasty stout, in fact I’m having trouble typing this review because I keep grabbing my glass instead. This is the (to me) perfect balance of malt sweetness and hop bitterness, such that I can’t taste any hops, only their closing bitterness. So far, this is the best offering I’ve had from Butternuts.

I saw this in the store and thought, "Why Not?" Here goes:

A: Dark black and opaque. Pours a slight head that quickly dissipates. Normal amount of lacing for a stout. Very generic.

S: Pretty good. No hops; hints of roasted malt and chocolate. Pretty simple, and not much can be attributed to this stout's smell other than dark malt.

T: Very simple, but still adequate. Dark, roasted malts coat the palate. Lots of caramel and roasted malts that impart a sweet and chocolatey taste. It's nowhere near as full-bodied and complex as many of the other stouts on the market. Overall, though, a very decent stout with lots of chocolate flavor. Nothing special, though.

M: Thick like a stout. Not as thick as many of the other stouts I've tried, but it still imparts substantial character. Good.

O: A very simple stout. It imparts the chocolate and roasted malts characteristic of most stouts. However, the lack of complexity may turn off beer aficionados that are used to thick, complex stouts that linger on the palate.

12 oz. can into a can-shaped glass.

A: Pours a deep brown with a thin khaki head, small patches of lacing remain on the glass.

S: Nice chocolate and some nuttiness are most prominent, a bit of coffee as well.

T: Some nuttiness starts on the palate and the chocolate comes through. Not overly sweet but enjoyable tastes do come through.

M: Medium bodied and smooth, easy drinking with a creamy finish and low bitterness.

O: A decent everyday stout that I'd try again. Far from the best of the style, but definitely worth a try.
